Can you take a lesser pension earlier, like 60 or 62? In the US system, the full public pension is at 67 but you can start collecting anytime between 62-67, you just get 8% less per year you took it early. I started at 65 because of the lower cost-of-living here, but if I’d stayed in the US, I would have waited until 67

Aye. Bought first house at in 2013 for £178k, sold after 4 years for £198k and Bought second for £450k. Sold this year at £555,000.banjo wrote: ↑04 Oct 2026, 10:25You've been stiffed big time on your mortgage, mine was paid off 3 years ago and I'm only 43.Lenny Cravats wrote: ↑01 Oct 2026, 14:31They paid into a different system, though.Coco wrote: ↑01 Oct 2026, 14:25
It's not a benefit, benefits are for folk who have never worked, they have already paid into the system
Most of us have been paying into the system for 20, 30, even 40 years, yet we should want to have that taken away from us??
And then when we are too expensive, then it's assisted suicide!
I'm paying into the system for them now. There's no chance mine, or my kids generation, get anywhere near what they have had... I've got a mortgage until I'm 71. fornicate knows what happens to me, and likely millions like me.
And my kids? They've got no fornicating chance.
Put down an £80k deposit on a house for £268k.
It's the divorce that fucked me, I reckon.
Needed the mortgage to be less than £950 a month. Hence the longer term.

And I'm sure you can take private pensions early, at a reduced rateNightmare Roy wrote: ↑05 Oct 2026, 21:13You can't but you can take it later and get more money, i know a guy who did it but died before he ever got any.Coco wrote: ↑05 Oct 2026, 19:12Don't think sogiacomino wrote: ↑05 Oct 2026, 11:14

You can take 25% as a tax-free lump sum when you reach 55 (although think that’s increasing to 57 soon). That’s definitely my plan.Coco wrote: ↑06 Oct 2026, 03:02And I'm sure you can take private pensions early, at a reduced rateNightmare Roy wrote: ↑05 Oct 2026, 21:13You can't but you can take it later and get more money, i know a guy who did it but died before he ever got any.

Confirm what?Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑03 Oct 2026, 03:58You say it’s a “sweeping generalisation” and then immediately confirm you’re in the exact same position as the people I talk about in my postSticknMove wrote: ↑02 Oct 2026, 18:47Just a silly sweeping generalisation. People paid their national insurance contributions to finance the NHS and statutory basic pension at the outset of their working lives many decades ago when our country was very different. People putting into the system after 40 to 50 years of working 40+ hours a week, paying tax and NICs, are getting something back for their service.Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑01 Oct 2026, 05:08
I wouldn’t say it’s penalising them at all, they still have a far far better life than someone relying on the state pension, and often spend a lot of time abroad in one of their holiday homes and are getting additional income from their UK rental property (also both mortgage free).
Why are we giving benefits to people who clearly don’t need them? Should we start giving job seekers allowance to people on £60k salary per year?
I have used the NHS 4 times in my lifetime. I didn’t pay into a system to finance migrants from the Third World who seem to have priority over generational citizens.
So I will be taking that pension, will never need it, and pass it on to my kids along with everything else that the ‘state’ will conspire to steal to finance their excessive waste.
But thanks for confirming you want state handouts for no reason![]()
You made a sweeping generalisation that people who grafted their whole lives and paid into the system, taking very little out, live far better lives are taking from the state. They are getting what they are statutorily entitled to.
I would happily forego my statutory entitlement if I thought this country was run properly with their priorities in order.
It isn’t and hasn’t for far too long.
Re: Burnham has just committed electoral suicide!
The thing is, the money we pay in now isn't going into a pot with our name on it, it's paying for the current pensioners, so when we're retired, the workers are paying our state pensions.

Keep 'em peeled, as the great Shaw Taylor used to say. A £55 million pound bung to his UAE mates and you don't expect him to trouser a few in return, just like his missus getting those dodgy EV contracts..., he's a lazy thieving scouse so and so as Alf Garnett would say.Nightmare Roy wrote: ↑15 Oct 2026, 12:35Did he trouser £5m?IRONFIST wrote: ↑15 Oct 2026, 06:23Seems old Bung'em Burnham has been telling yet more porkies, he's met the Man Shifty bosses at least six times...Nightmare Roy wrote: ↑14 Oct 2026, 10:54

I see old Kinnock's son on Question Time didn't like when that audience member rightly called out him and his family making a fortune from the EU gravy train, (at UK taxpayers expense.)

In positive news he has given the go ahead to drill for gas.
Re: Burnham has just committed electoral suicide!
Well positive but too little too late, energy bills will still be through the roof thanks to Ed Millipede and Liebour stifling production, Burnham will also now have Pothead Polanski and the Nut Zero loons targetting him, saw protests on the news earlier...
