RILEY-COUPE HEADLINES MF PRO CARD NOV. 14 IN LONDON

Viddal Riley will headline a card for the first time November 14 in London.

The 29-year-old Riley (14-0, 7 KOs), ranked No. 7 among The Ring’s cruiserweight contenders for Jai Opetaia’s title, will put his European title on the line when he faces France’s Seydi Coupe (14-0, 9 KOs), his mandatory challenger, in the 12-round main event that night. DAZN will stream the MF Pro show topped by Riley versus Coupe from OVO Arena Wembley.

Riley, a native of North London, claimed his European belt in his last outing April 4, when he widely outpointed the experienced Mateusz Masternak across town at O2 Arena.

Riley, who is ranked No. 2 by the IBF, had hoped the victory over Masternak would pave the way for a world title attempt in his next bout. He has been mandated to fight David Nyika for the vacant IBF 200-pound strap, but with no agreement on that fight forthcoming, Riley has decided to stay busy by defending his European crown instead.

“It’s main event season,” Riley said. “It’s taken 14 wins and three professional titles to make it here and I look forward to owning the moment.

“I am defending what’s mine as the EBU European champion and I will put on a statement performance to show why I’m mandatory for the IBF, ranked No. 7 [by] Ring Magazine and Top 10 in three of the major world governing bodies.”

“Viddal could easily have waited patiently for his shot at the IBF world title,” Kalle Sauerland, Riley’s promoter, said. “But off the back of his Mateusz Masternak masterclass, he wanted to keep the show on the road by taking on his mandatory challenger. Coupe is unbeaten and dangerous, but Viddal is a world champion in waiting and we’re expecting a big win, live on DAZN.”

Riley-Coupe slots in at the top of a card which is already set to feature the lightweight bout between Manchester’s Zelfa Barrett (35-3, 18 KOs) and Wales’ Gavin Gwynne (19-4-2, 5 KOs). Yaser Al Ghena (16-0, 3 KOs), a junior welterweight from London, is also set to battle Darlington’s Ben Marksby (14-0, 3 KOs) on the undercard.

Is it wrong to feel more excited about Barrett v Gwynne than AJ v Fury?

I'm not trying to be clever but it's a better match with genuine progression at stake.

I know what you mean, there are times I’ve been more excited for an undercard fight for an English title than the main event involving one our bigger stars at the time.

I remember Catarall vs Stalker being like 4 fights down the card but in terms of intrigue to me it was number 1 as at that point Catarall hadn’t broken out and Stalker was still undefeated and coming off the Olympics.

In saying that I can’t think of any undercard fights that I want to watch more than AJ vs Fury.

BARRETT READY TO STEP OUT OF THE SHADOWS WITH GWYNNE TEST

Zelfa Barrett has spent months quietly grinding away behind the scenes.

In February 2024, the former European 130-pound champion was below-par and outboxed over 10 rounds by future WBA titleholder Jazza Dickens. The result consigned the 33-year-old Mancunian to the shadows.

In the aftermath, Barrett (35-3, 18 KOs) made some difficult decisions.

He left his uncle and trainer Pat Barrett, moving across the city to join Joe Gallagher at the famous 'Champs Camp' gym while building himself towards campaigning at lightweight.

Barrett got down to work, waiting for the phone to ring. It didn't. He and Gallagher kept busy, learning how one another work but a small hall show here and a preliminary eight-round appearance there wasn't enough.

Now though, the former world title challenger has been given an opportunity back in the spotlight.

Armed with a MF Pro promotional deal and under Sam Jones' management, he will box former European lightweight titleholder Gavin Gwynne (19-4-2, 5 KOs).

The pair will feature on the undercard preceding Viddal Riley's European cruiserweight title defense against Seydi Coupe at London's Wembley Arena on November 14, live and exclusively on DAZN.

“I've just wanted one opportunity to remind everybody who I am and what I'm about,” Barrett told The Ring.

“I've not come across a fighter who’s been as harshly treated. No one's given me opportunities. Fighters have been beaten, got another opportunity and beat again. What about me?

“If there’s bad, there’s always good and the reason for it is because now, when I become a world champion, it’ll feel even sweeter.”

Over the past 20 months, the laid-back Barrett has been given a definite edge.

While happy MF Pro has put its trust in him, he's approaching this career phase believing he's only ever one poor performance away from being cast back into the wilderness.

Fighting Gwynne gives him the ideal opportunity to produce a meaningful win, but is also intent on reannouncing himself in spectacular fashion.

“A lot of people will pick him to beat me because they've not seen me on TV for that long,” he said.
“Now that I'm back and I'm getting this highlight knockout, my name will be back being talked about in British boxing. That's my aim and my goal. For people to be speaking about me and saying, “Wow. Did you see Zelfa? Look how fast he is. Did you see his left hook?”

“I'm excited, man.”

Agreed. Just my opinion, but Zelfa doesn't throw enough punches. I can see Gavin running away with it for the first five or six, then Barrett will be sinking in those liver shots. Good fight either way.

Riley Ready To Join Opetaia, Benavidez Among Cruiserweight Elite

Viddal Riley is on a mission to establish himself as one third of the cruiserweight “Three Kings.”

Riley (14-0, 7 KOs) is ranked No. 7 by The Ring and is waiting for his first shot at a world cruiserweight title after the IBF mandated him and David Nyika to fight for its vacant belt. But with discussions around that fight still ongoing, Riley decided to face the mandatory challenger for his European title, Seydi Coupe, in the interim.

The pair are scheduled to meet November 14 at OVO Arena Wembley in London, in what is Riley’s first main event.

The 29-year-old Riley hopes an impressive victory will maintain his steady march toward the top of the division, where Jai Opetaia and David Benavidez, the respective Ring champion and No. 1 contender, currently lie in wait.

“What I see is, in the next 12 months, the names that need to be discussed in this division is mine, Jai Opetaia and David Benavidez,” Riley told The Ring. “Those will be the three names people are talking about when it comes to the best of the division.

“We want the purists, we want the streets, we want everybody to start having an opinion and mixing those three names together. So, if that is achieved in the next 12 months then I’ll be where I want to be.”

Riley’s pursuit of the vacant IBF title has been slowed down by Opetaia’s decision to file a lawsuit against the sanctioning body in July in a Nevada federal court. The undefeated Australian reportedly filed a 123-paragraph complaint after he was stripped of the belt before his clash with Brandon Glanton in what was his Zuffa Boxing debut March 8.

With that dispute ongoing, both Riley and Nyika have been left in limbo. The Englishman is not prepared, though, to sit on his hands.

When asked when he expects an update on the situation, Riley replied, “Where’s the end of the rainbow, brother? You just don’t know, things seem to change all the time, dates change all the time. It’s really out of my control. When it first happened, obviously you get that initial frustration. I’m supposed to be fighting for the world title. What's going on?

“And then you realize I can’t even put my energy here. I have to place my energy into my career and not what’s happening with a sanctioning body. But just know that I’ve earned the position to fight for it when everything is sorted. So, yeah, it’s just one of those ones you’ve got to let go.”

Instead, Riley and his promoters at MF Pro have decided to keep him busy by facing France’s Coupe (14-0, 9 KOs).

“I don’t look at this as a keep-busy fight,” Riley said. “It’s a genuine defense of my title. It’s not someone that I’ve handpicked, either. This is being ordered by the EBU, so it’s my job to defend this title, show that I’m above European level and literally want to get into the world scene.

“That’s the objective, is to get into the world scene and get into that conversation with the two main men of the division as quickly as possible.”
