🚨 VERGIL-THURMAN BEING FINALIZED

✅ Oscar De La Hoya: "There's been rumors about Keith Thurman. We're finalizing that deal there and hopefully we can have him on the Benavidez card in December, which will be great on DAZN. I believe in Arizona."

‘That’s the talk’: Oscar De La Hoya negotiating Vergil Ortiz vs Keith Thurman

Oscar De La Hoya breaks down plans for several of his key fighters.

Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya spends some time talking to Fight Hub TV about Floyd Schofield’s weekend fight against Lucas Bahdi, plans for Vergil Ortiz to fight Keith Thurman on the upcoming David Benavidez undercard, why he wasn’t at the Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn fight, and more. Here’s some excerpts of what he had to say with the full video interview below.

DLH on Schofield’s upcoming fight
“When you get a kid like Schofield and take him to that world title, you help him, you try to guide him to that world title, it’s so rewarding, it’s so gratifying. Oct. 10, I do have to do my homework when it comes to how many world champions we helped. It’s a lot. Since the beginning, it’s got to be in the hundreds. So, I’m proud of what we do.”

On the biggest fight he thinks he can make for Schofield
“It might not even be at 135 pounds. ‘Kid’ is a big kid. Kid Austin is a big ‘35 pounder and he’s only growing. I really do believe 147 is going to be where Kid is going to shine, like really develop to this beast. I believe that weight class will be the pinnacle of his career. So, yeah, looking forward to those fights there and we all know the welterweight division is very hot right now.

“I strongly believe Kid can become undisputed at 135, 140, but 147 will be his weight class.”

On plans for Vergil Ortiz to fight Keith Thurman
“Yeah, that’s the talk. That’s the talk, to fight him on the Benavidez card, which would be awesome. Imgaine Benavidez and Vergil Ortiz. I mean please, you’ll sell out any arena, easy. We’re working out things with Keith Thurman. It’s not the opponent yet because things are being worked out but we’re hoping that we can get Vergil’s career back on track.”

On why Vergil doesn’t go straight into a Boots fight
“I wish it would’ve been the Boots fight but we can’t keep our fighter idle for so long. I mean, Boots is going to fight who, Kelly? Josh Kelly, is it? Then Fundora is going to fight somebody else. So, we had to keep Vergil busy and not idle and so Keith Thurman is one guy that’s always willing to fight the best, which is very cool…That is the plan but you never know what happens after that, so we’ll see.”

On Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn
“Everything’s cool…Ryan had a great victory, I’m very happy for him that he was able to knockout Conor Benn obviously the way I expected. Look, people were saying ‘oh my gosh, this is a huge fight.’ No. It turned out the way I actually envisioned it. Conor Benn is a great fighter, don’t get me wrong. He’s a good fighter in the UK but there’s a difference when you come fight in the US. It’s just a whole different level.“

On not being present at the fight
“Ryan and I talked. He wanted me to walk him out…I have so much information. I’ve been keeping quiet, don’t get me wrong. I cannot wait for this ultimate clap back. So I don’t want to spill the beans here but it’s going to be powerful…But me and Ryan, we’re cool.

“I wasn’t going to show up [after being asked not to come] to be embarrassed. I mean, it was a Zuffa f-ckin’ event…But I was not going to show up to be embarrassed and that’s exactly what they were going to do to me. I was not going to do that so I made the wise decision to not go.”

On the Eddie Hearn vs Dana White beef
“I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be Team Eddie. I’m Team Eddie. I never thought I would be Team Eddie. He is cooking Dana White, it is hilarious. I think he took a book out of my edits that I do with my videos, posting Dana White videos and making fun of him and this and that. But it’s crazy how Dana has no clue what’s going on.

“They’re asking him about boxing, they’re asking him about the UFC, it’s like, he doesn’t know what’s happening…I think Eddie Hearn has done a number on him and I’m laughing all the way to the bank.”

My response to this fight news? Meh. I doubt this is the return bout any of us wanted to see Ortiz Jr. fight.

In my mind this is little more than a tune-up, knock-the-rust-off fight against a boxer who had a name and reputation at one time. Surely there is a more viable opponent out there, someone who could have made Ortiz Jr. work for a handful of rounds before taking control. Instead, we get a fight that will merely be used as a means to compare the performances of Fundora and Ortiz Jr. against Thurman.

Great. Just ... great.

Did Keith Thurman vs Julio Diaz disgust you?

This is Boxing. This is the cycle. The Young on the way in feast on the Old on the way out. In 10 or 12 years if not sooner Vergil Ortiz will be on the receiving end of such treatment.

Yes, it would be good to see him back in the ring (I would prefer a different opponent, but he and his team didn't consult with me about it - go figure) and that the messy legal drama has hopefully been resolved.

Thurman: Ortiz's power more dangerous than Fundora's

Sebastian Fundora was a handful, but dealing with Vergil Ortiz will be even worse.

That's according to Keith Thurman, who looks set to face Ortiz later this year, months on from losing to Fundora.

"[Ortiz] is young, strong, dangerous, I think when it comes to punching power he's more dangerous than Sebastian,” Thurman told spam.

“Sebastian is a volume puncher; it's a more rough-tough fight, he never knocked me down so l believe Vergil has more that can put you down but Vergil isn’t 6-foot-6."

Ortiz (24-0, 22 KOs) will seemingly get a chance to prove Thurman right in December. As previously reported by The Ring and later confirmed by Oscar De La Hoya, Ortiz’s promoter, Thurman is likely next for the Texan on the undercard of David Benavidez vs. Michal Cieslak.

Former welterweight champion Thurman, 37, is coming off the first stoppage defeat of his career against Fundora in March.

Ortiz, The Ring’s No. 2-ranked junior middleweight, is ready to start a new path at 160 pounds. The 28-year-old from Grand Prairie is hoping to get his career back on track after missing out on a fight with Jaron "Boots" Ennis earlier this year due to legal issues with Golden Boy.

Talks broke down and Ennis, The Ring's No. 1 154-pounder, went on to become WBA and WBO 154-pound champion by stopping Xander Zayas in the seventh round of their June clash.

Ortiz amicably settled his legal dispute with De La Hoya and now his return is being planned, but with none of the champions available, the hard-hitting star has set his sights on middleweight.

Veteran Thurman, who has never fought at 160 pounds before, looks to be the first test.

"We were flirting with this fight multiple times during my career,” Thurman said. “Many years ago, I got a phone call and said 'yes.' The team said 'we like Thurman but not right now.' I heard his name last year and was about to agree.

"They had Vergil on the table, I was ready to go. Then, before sending out the contract, they put Fundora on the table. Interim or full champion, I said give me the title fight so I bypassed [Ortiz] by proxy and took the title match. Sebastian injured himself, the fight got postponed to earlier this year. [Team Ortiz] doesn't want to defend the 154-pound title, they wanna move him up to 160, I just want another good fight and to stay busy, I'm trying to give the fans what they want and be more active in my career, fight some of the best names out there in the world of boxing."

if it's a good performance the momentum will return and we'll see him in a big fight next year. between the health issues and legal issues, it's been pretty tiring being an Ortiz fan :brick:

De La Hoya doesn't like Thurman as opponent for Ortiz

Oscar De La Hoya knows how badly Vergil Ortiz needs activity, but he isn’t a fan of his potential next opponent.

After fixing their tattered relationship, De La Hoya is ironing out a deal for Ortiz (24-0, 22 KOs) to step into the ring against former welterweight champion Keith Thurman. But while the Clearwater, Florida, native does have noteworthy credentials, he's past his best and is coming off a sixth-round knockout loss to Sebastian Fundora. He's also never fought at middleweight.

“The fight doesn't make sense because Vergil's on such a big level,” De La Hoya told DAZN. “But it's the only big name guy available that can make a good fight out of it. It's not the fight I wanted, but it’s gonna get made because of the circumstance we're in.”

A few months prior, Jaron “Boots” Ennis, who holds the WBA and WBO junior middleweight titles, was Ortiz’s No. 1 target. But those talks ceased after legal issues between Ortiz and De La Hoya.

Now the matter has been amicably settled, Ortiz’s longtime promoter wants to get him a world title shot at 160 pounds.

Thurman (31-2, 23 KOs), 37, is a steppingstone to that goal. Even though the former 147-pound champion faces an uphill battle, De La Hoya isn't completely overlooking him.

"I know Keith Thurman, They're gonna count him out and say well, he just got stopped by Fundora, he doesn't belong in there with Vergil, but he's a fighter who's got the heart of a lion,” De La Hoya said. “When Thurman steps in the ring, he doesn't back down and doesn't go for a payday.

“We'll get [Ortiz] back on track. He'll have a world title shot soon. The 160-pound division right now is there for the taking and Vergil can steamroll right through everyone. At 160, we'll see his full potential, and every world champion, you put them in line he'll beat them all."

Benavidez, Cieslak set for 3-belt cruiserweight unification bout

Also on PBC PPV card: Vergil Ortiz returns vs. Keith Thurman, Emiliano Vargas, Marco Romero, Nikita Tszyu in action

David Benavidez and Michal Cieslak will square off in a three-belt cruiserweight unification fight in the headliner of a PBC pay-per-view on DAZN on Dec. 5 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, PBC announced on Thursday.

The fight, which has been expected, will see Phoenix native Benavidez, the WBO and WBA titleholder, have a home area fight against WBC titlist Cieslak, who was recently elevated from interim status when Noel Mikaelian was stripped soon after ignoring a mandatory order to face Benavidez because he instead fought lineal champion Jai Opetaia in a ninth-round knockout loss on Sept. 12.

As expected, Vergil Ortiz Jr. will move up to middleweight and face Keith Thurman, who is also moving up in weight, in the scheduled 12-round co-feature.

“David Benavidez has been building his own legacy from the beginning,” promoter Sampson Lewkowicz said. “From when he became the youngest super middleweight world champion ever, to his time as light heavyweight king, and now as the unified cruiserweight champion, ‘The Mexican Monster’ hides from no one, and no one can stop him.”

Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs), 29, moved up to cruiserweight on May 2 and pummeled Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez into a sixth-round knockout to win the unified title at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Recently, Benavidez made the decision to remain at cruiserweight and vacated the WBC light heavyweight title as well as the WBA “regular” belt.

After Opetaia defeated Mikaelian, Benavidez was in the ring talking up a showdown with Opetaia for May but Cieslak is up next.

“I’m excited to be fighting in Arizona once again,” said Benavidez, who has not fought at home since knocking out David Lemieux in the third round in a WBC interim light heavyweight title bout in 2022 at the same arena. “It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here. I’m gonna give the fans in my home state of Arizona a great performance on Dec. 5.”

Cieslak (28-2, 22 KOs), 37, of Poland, has won seven consecutive fights — all by knockout — since suffering a knockdown in a unanimous decision loss challenging Lawrence Okolie for the WBO title in 2022.

Cieslak won the vacant WBC interim title in his last fight, a one-sided fourth-round knockout of former light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal in Pascal’s hometown of Laval, Canada, in June 2025.

“I’ve been waiting for this opportunity my whole life,” Cieslak said. “This is exactly why I’ve been training — to test myself and compete on the biggest stage against fighters like Benavidez. I’m confident, but there’s no point in talking nonsense. The focus has to be on hard work. Those who know me understand that I’m not going there just to show up. I will bring all three belts back to Poland.”

Ortiz (24-0, 22 KOs), 28, of Grand Prairie, Texas, has been idle since blitzing Erickson Lubin in a second-round knockout to retain the WBC interim junior middleweight for the second time last November. A major fight with Jaron “Boots” Ennis was in the works but fell apart when Ortiz sued his promoter, Golden Boy, over contract issues, which were eventually settled ahead of court-ordered arbitration.

Part of the settlement included a re-worked deal that will keep him tied to Golden Boy for three more fights, the first of which will be against heavy underdog Thurman.

“I am pumped to share the ring with a former world champion in Keith Thurman, who I highly respect for taking the fight when everyone else decided to hide behind politics,” Ortiz said. “Being the co-main for Benavidez is an honor as I respect him equally as a fighter and a person. It’s gonna be a great night of boxing and overall I’m just happy to be active again.”

In just his second fight since 2022, mainly due to injuries, former unified welterweight titleholder Thurman (31-2, 23 KOs), 37, of St. Petersburg, Florida, suffered a one-sided sixth-round knockout loss challenging WBC junior middleweight titlist Sebastian Fundora on March 28.

“I’m back with a vengeance,” Thurman said. “I’m bringing the heat in December with an action fight against Vergil Ortiz — another young lion. I fight the best and the gladiator in me is not done yet.”

Ortiz, manager Rick Mirigian and Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya would have preferred a fresher opponent but Thurman was the only name opponent available and willing to fight him.

“There’s a reason why Vergil Ortiz Jr. is the most avoided fighter without a belt,” De La Hoya said. “As a former world champion, Keith Thurman is a crafty, experienced fighter who has been in there with the very best and will give Vergil some good

Vargas also on card

Also on the card, Top Rank junior welterweight Emiliano Vargas (18-0, 15 KOs), 22, of Las Vegas, the 2025 Fight Freaks Unite prospect of the year and the son of former two-time junior middleweight titlist Fernando Vargas, will face an opponent to be determined in a 10-rounder.

“This year has been a true blessing for me,” Vargas said. “I started off with great performances in February and June, and outside the ring, I had some incredible opportunities like being part of the Super Bowl halftime show with Bad Bunny, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at a Mexico game during the World Baseball Classic, and taking my first steps into the world of film. These are experiences I will never forget, but I am very clear that my priority and my passion will always be boxing.

“I want to end this year on a high note by delivering a spectacular performance for my people and showing why I am ready to take on the biggest challenges of my career.”

Also on the main card will be two eight-rounders: Blue-chip middleweight prospect Marco Romero, who will have his third fight since signing with PBC, and Australian junior middleweight Nikita Tszyu, the son of Hall of Famer Kostya Tszyu and younger brother of former junior middleweight titlist Tim Tszyu. Their opponents are to be determined.

Romero (16-0, 14 KOs), 20, of Overland Park, Kansas, is coming off a highlight-reel one-punch first-round knockout of Matias Ferreira on Oct. 17 on the Sebastian Fundora-Ermal Hadribeaj undercard.

Romero, who has gained tremendous experience sparring in Montreal with super middleweight titleholders Christian Mbilli and Osleys Iglesias, was a standout amateur, winning 23-national titles, most notably a 2024 National Golden Gloves title and being named the tournament’s most outstanding boxer.

“I’m excited to come right back, which shows me how much PBC believes in me, especially by putting me on another big card like this,” Romero said. “To put me on another monster card with ‘The Monster’, David Benavidez, I couldn’t be more grateful.”

Tszyu (12-0-1, 10 KOs), 28, a southpaw, will make his United States debut. He is coming off a 12-round split draw in a regional title bout with undefeated countryman Ben Mahoney in August.

The fight on Dec. 5 will bring Tszyu to the same arena where Kostya Tszyu stopped Sharmba Mitchell in the third round of their rematch to retain the lineal/IBF junior welterweight title in 2004, the final victory of his career before losing his last bout and the title to Ricky Hatton seven months later.

“I’m excited to be making my U.S. debut,” Tszyu said. “To be on a massive David Benavidez card is truly an honor. He’s the most exciting fighter in the world. He comes forward, he hurts people and he never gives anyone an easy night. That’s the kind of fighting I respect. I also like to fight with that warrior mentality. Arizona is also where my father had his last victory, so it holds an important place in my heart.”

Vergil Ortiz under ‘pressure’ to outperform Sebastian Fundora against Keith Thurman

Vergil Ortiz Jnr's trainer, Robert Garcia, admits his fighter will be under pressure to outperform Sebastian Fundora's six-round dismantling of Keith Thurman when he faces the 37-year-old in December.

It was announced this week that Ortiz will return to the ring after reconciling with his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, earlier this year. Ortiz will face former unified welterweight champion Thurman at 160lbs on December 5 in Glendale, Arizona, in the chief support to David Benavidez's cruiserweight unification with Michael Cieslak.

The matchup has attracted criticism after Thurman was stopped convincingly by WBC junior middleweight champion Fundora in March. Garcia, however, believes that result places additional pressure on Ortiz, who will have been out of the ring for more than a year by the time he faces Thurman.

“That's the thing that a lot of people might not see and notice that when you're going against somebody like Thurman, who just looked pretty bad, he got stopped, he got hurt pretty bad against Fundora, then it puts not only Vergil, but ourselves, trainers, we have to know that we have to go out there and perform better than Fundora,” Garcia told BS Today.

“That's also going to be pressure for us, for Vergil, that we have to go out there and we can't allow Thurman to even put up a fight, because if he does, then everybody's going to be comparing the differences between Fundora and Vergil. Vergil himself has that in mind that he's got to go out there and perform and take care of business the way Fundora did or even faster than that.”

Ortiz commends Thurman for taking fight, says champions ducked him

Vergil Ortiz doesn’t know what else he was supposed to do.

The Ring’s No. 2-ranked junior middleweight will return December 5 in Glendale, Arizona on the undercard of David Benavidez vs. Michal Cieslak, as he takes on Keith Thurman in a middleweight clash.

Since Thurman, a former welterweight champion, is 37 and coming off a sixth-round stoppage defeat at the hands of WBC junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora, fans haven’t been kind to Ortiz and his opponent selection. While he understands their frustrations, he doesn’t believe he had much of a choice.

“Shout out to Keith Thurman for taking this fight and actually believing in his ability to beat this eternal prospect after a year-long layoff,” Ortiz wrote on social media.

“You would think a fighter who has never competed for a full world title and hasn't fought in over a year for the second time in 3 years, and with a history of a literal muscle-decaying disease would be easy pickings and people would be lining up to fight him. But nah, somehow someway the world champions found a way to not fight. We tried to fight everybody and only one guy was up for it. Massive respect to Keith.”

It’s been a forgettable year for the WBC interim junior middleweight champion. In the first half of 2026, Ortiz appeared to be on the verge of securing a showdown against Jaron Ennis, The Ring’s No. 1 junior middleweight.

However, Ortiz and Oscar De La Hoya, his promoter, became embroiled in legal issues, and although the pair have since settled their differences amicably, Ortiz will have been out of the ring for 13 months by the time he fights Thurman.

Ennis, who went on to beat Xander Zayas for his WBA and WBO 154-pound titles, is closing in on a deal that would see him take on IBF champion Josh Kelly next. Fundora is coming off a 12th-round stoppage win over Ermal Hadribeaj on October 17.

In addition to the junior middleweight champions being unavailable, the 160-pound belt holders are mostly tied up.
Carlos Adames, the WBC middleweight champion, returns on November 14. WBA titlist Erislandy Lara takes on Tim Tszyu in December in Australia, and Denzel Bentley is attempting to defend his WBO title against Shane Mosley Jr. on November 7.

With no one of note ready, willing, and able to fight him, Ortiz is simply happy that he finally has a dance partner.

“We're going to shake up Phoenix on December 5th as the co-main for Benavidez,” Ortiz said. “It's gonna be a great night of boxing.”
