'I would like to thank my saviour, Jesus Christ'
'I would like to thank my saviour, Jesus Christ'
Just watched the Forest v Arsenal game, unfortunately Arsenal won 1-0.
What boiled my piss was, after the game, the Sky presenter interviewed the Arsenal captain on his thoughts of the game.
His first words where. 'id like to thank my saviour Jesus Christ'
Firstly what does that mean? In all honesty I do not believe in any good or religion, so please educate me what that phrase meant to this player?
Secondly, would it be acceptable for his saviour to sanction and approve a wage of £250k per week whilst there are starving children in Africa.
Please educate me on both points.

It means I'm a Christian or my agent told me to pretend to be because it plays well on TV apparently. (I can't imagine half the Athletes who say this really mean it. It's just a cliche sports phrase at this point)
I enjoy whenever comedy pokes fun at this phenomenon. For instance on Family Guy when interviewed after a win Peter says "I wanna thank God. I wanna thank the Lord God. I'd also like to thank Satan. Ya know, if he weren't down there causing all that chaos God would probably just go insane with boredom. Everybody likes to feel useful ya know. Makes the world go round....What was your question?"
Something like that

It’s just self absorbed pretentiousness.

Would it be acceptable for someone, a sports personality to say 'i would like to thank satan'?
Is it legal to say that?
Re: 'I would like to thank my saviour, Jesus Christ'
Nobody's ever done it
Re: 'I would like to thank my saviour, Jesus Christ'
Tyson Fury used to do that, not sure if he still does. To his credit, even though he was a preacher I don't think Foreman did. After he stopped Moorer he dropped to his knees and looked up, but I"m not sure he thanked Jesus or even God for that matter.
How was Holyfield on that? I know he's a religious guy and got psyched up listening to gospel music. Can't remember now if he thanked Hey Zeus after fights.

We sure have some hyper sensitive types here . I missed it because I was at mass worshipping Jesus Christ.

Jesus was obviously watching the game from home, chilling out with a few beers, so the Arsenal captain showed respect by thanking him for tuning in

Why in the world would anyone be upset if someone says this? It's just his belief.
Re: 'I would like to thank my saviour, Jesus Christ'
I'm happy people have a legal right to say that in most countries.
I'm also happy people have a legal right to not like it when people say it.
I don't see what's complicated about that.

Oh Holyfield definitely was a "I wanna thank the Lord" guy after his fights. That kinda stuff used to annoy me, but I don't really give a sh*t at this point.Tony1244 wrote: ↑18 Oct 2026, 16:15 Tyson Fury used to do that, not sure if he still does. People being Religious doesn't offend me until they try to make the rules of their Religion the Laws of my Land.

On the old TV Ringside shown in the 1970s, there was an old-time commentator, Merv Williams who was the master of the one-liners.
There was this one fighter, when entering the ring would furiously cross himself multiple times.
Old Merv remarked, "It's not going to help him if he cannot fight."

I'd like to see someone blame God after a loss.

Re: 'I would like to thank my saviour, Jesus Christ'
I guess it takes some ego though, to think that God is sat watching your fight, football game and ensuring you win, whilst he's got another 8 billion peeps to look after.
Re: 'I would like to thank my saviour, Jesus Christ'
Fuck creating the multiverse. God’s got the football team to babysit. ![[icon_witsend.gif] :witzend:](./images/smilies/icon_witsend.gif)
Re: 'I would like to thank my saviour, Jesus Christ'
To be fair, I think he meant the credit for his talent and achievements should ultimately go to God. Rather than God intervened to help Arsenal win.

Yeah, ive always taken it as an act of humility, not a person invoking divine intervention. A lot of athletes thank their mother at times of personal success as well.

Tyson missed a golden opportunity to say Buster's Mom watched him become HW Champion from hell.hhaehre wrote: ↑19 Oct 2026, 18:44And if she is deceased, they think she's still watching the fight/game from heaven (never hell).
