WBO orders Oscar Collazo-Ryusei Matsumoto negotiations
The WBO Monday ordered negotiations to begin between its full minimumweight champion Oscar Collazo and interim champion Ryusei Matsumoto.
Collazo 15-0 (12 KOs) suffered a rib injury last month prior to his planned attempt to capture the unified flyweight title from Ricardo Sandoval, who was promptly upset by replacement opponent Sergio Mendoza on October 10 in Chicago.
The WBO allowed Japan’s Matsumoto 9-0 (4 KOs) to fight Mexico’s Russell Silviera for the interim belt on September 27 in Tokyo, and Matsumoto won a unanimous decision.
While the WBC and WBA allow interim champions to hold their belts for several months, the WBO wants only one champion per division, pressing Collazo to confront Matsumoto in short order.
It’s unclear if WBO-WBA champion Collazo will remain in the division, or if he will seek a second division title as he was attempting to do against Sandoval.
