David Benavidez return eyed for December 12th, could meet Michal Cieslak

David Benavidez and veteran Michal Cieslak could meet in Arizona this winter

With a three-belt unification against Noel Mikaelian off the table for now, Mike Coppinger reports that David Benavidez will return to action on December 12th. Coppinger “expect[s]” him to meet interim WBC cruiserweight champion Michal Cieslak, confirming an earlier report from Abraham Gonzalez, who claims it will land in the “area” of Benavidez’s birthplace of Phoenix, Arizona.

Cieslak (28-2, 22 KO), whose only pro losses came in title bids against Ilunga Makabu and Lawrence Okolie, mollywhopped the remains of Jean Pascal two Junes ago for his seventh consecutive victory since falling to Okolie in 2022. He’s not a particularly glamorous opponent and doesn’t have the deepest body of work outside of faded vets like Pascal, Olanrewaju Durodola, and Youri Kayembre Kalenga, but he’s a solid operator and hasn’t gone the distance in victory since 2018.

Benavidez (32-0, 26 KO) made short work of “Zurdo” Ramirez in his cruiserweight debut to claim the WBA and WBO titles. He then flexed his status as reigning WBC light heavyweight champion to push for a rare mandatory unification against Mikaelian. Sampson Lewkowicz and Don King claim to have worked out a deal, but Mikaelian elected to try his luck with Zuffa instead, which I’m still convinced will result in a lawsuit.

Thus, a kinda-palatable title defense. Maybe next time.

Cieslak likely next for Benavidez on December 12

David Benavidez appears poised to stay at cruiserweight for his next fight.

The Ring’s Mike Coppinger confirmed during the latest episode of “Inside The Ring,” which streamed Monday on DAZN, that the WBA and WBO cruiserweight champion will likely face WBC interim titleholder Michal Cieslak on December 12. Other outlets have also reported that Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) versus Cieslak (28-2, 22 KOs, 1 NC) is potentially next on that date.

Handlers for Benavidez, The Ring’s No. 1 contender in the cruiserweight and light heavyweight divisions and No. 5 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list, were previously in discussions to face WBC cruiserweight champ Noel Mikaelian.
Armenia’s Mikaelian (28-3, 12 KOs) instead pivoted to a fight against Ring champ Jai Opetaia (30-0, 23 KOs) on September 12 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

They’ll meet in the co-feature before Ryan Garcia defends his WBC welterweight title against Conor Benn in a main event Paramount+ will stream in the United States and DAZN will offer on pay-per-view and to subscribers of its Ultimate plan in the UK and Ireland.

Whether the WBC title will be on the line for Opetaia-Mikaelian remains to be seen.

The WBC named Benavidez, of Phoenix, Arizona, as Mikaelian’s mandatory challenger on May 29. It is rare for a champion to be ordered by a sanctioning body to face a champion from another sanctioning organization, but it occurred in part because Benavidez’s representatives petitioned the WBC on his behalf.

Benavidez, 29, also holds the WBC light heavyweight title. He’ll remain at cruiserweight in part because the light heavyweight fight he wants against Ring, IBF, WBA and WBO champ Dmitry Bivol isn’t available to him next.

If Mikaelian, 35, is stripped of his WBC belt, Cieslak, The Ring’s No. 4 cruiserweight contender, could be elevated to full titlist, or the title could be vacant for the Benavidez-Cieslak fight. The WBC could also mandate the winner of Opetaia-Mikaelian to face the winner of Benavidez-Cieslak in a three-belt unification bout in 2027.

Mikaelian is rated No. 5 among The Ring’s cruiserweight contenders.

Benavidez, a three-division titleholder, moved up to cruiserweight and beat Gilberto Ramirez (48-2, 30 KOs) in a dominant sixth-round stoppage to become the WBA and WBC champion on May 2 at T-Mobile Arena.

Cieslak, 37, of Kozienice, Poland, last fought in June 2025, scoring a fourth-round stoppage of former light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal to become the WBC interim cruiserweight champ.

WBC elevates Cieslak to full champion, sanctions defense vs Benavidez

Mikaelian was stripped of the WBC cruiserweight title. The winner of Cieslak vs Benavidez is expected to face mandatory contender Opetaia

Michal Cieslak has been elevated to full WBC cruiserweight champion, and his mandatory title defense against David Benavidez has been sanctioned by the organization.
  • Meanwhile, two-time WBC cruiserweight champion Noel Mikaelian of Armenia was stripped of the title, which he held ahead of his Saturday bout against Jai Opetaia.
  • Australia’s Opetaia (30-0, 23 KOs), who won the fight by ninth-round TKO, has become a mandatory contender and is now expected to face the winner of Cieslak vs Benavidez.
The WBC made the announcement regarding the status of its cruiserweight division on Monday.

Poland’s Cieslak (28-2, 22 KOs) claimed the vacant interim WBC cruiserweight title by fourth-round TKO against Jean Pascal in June.

Reports about a potential bout with Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) of Phoenix, Arizona, who currently holds the division’s unified WBA and WBO belts, emerged in August.
  • Following his victory over Mikaelian, former two-time IBF cruiserweight champion Opetaia, who also holds the Ring and Zuffa Boxing belts, called Benavidez into the ring, and the two fighters agreed to a showdown next May.

WBC orders David Benavidez cruiserweight title fight, with Opetaia to face winner

The WBC have declared their cruiserweight title vacant, and have also declared a new, “elevated” champion, with David Benavidez ordered into a title fight.

It’s a convoluted pathway to get to something pretty simple: Michal Cieslak is the new WBC cruiserweight champion, he’s been ordered to defend against Benavidez, and then the winner of that fight must face Jai Opetaia.

Noel Mikaelian has been stripped of the belt after his loss to Opetaia this past Saturday night, where the WBC title was not on the line and it was a whole to-do with Don King Productions threatening Zuffa Boxing and TKO with a cease-and-desist order, and the fight went on anyway.

Immediately after that fight, Benavidez and Opetaia verbally agreed to meet in May 2027, which does give Benavidez (32-0, 26 KO) plenty of time to make the fight with Cieslak. Benavidez already holds the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles, and sanctioning bodies in the past usually didn’t allow for recognized champions of other organizations to fight for their vacant titles.

But normal, actual rules are made to be broken, and boxing sanctioning body rules are barely made to exist in the first place. “It’s boxing,” is how you can figure this working the way it will.

Cieslak (28-2, 22 KO) is a 37-year-old Polish fighter who won the interim WBC cruiserweight title against a completely shot Jean Pascal back in June 2025, and is on a seven-fight win streak following a 2022 loss to Lawrence Okolie. For his career, he’s 27-0 in Poland, and 1-2 outside of his native country, and the win was in Quebec against the aforementioned completely shot Pascal.

Cieslak is not a bad fighter, but on paper will not be considered any serious threat to beat Benavidez, if the fight goes off as ordered by the WBC, which it likely will.

It opens up a clear route for Benavidez vs Opetaia to be Officially Ordered by at least that sanctioning body, which is an additional way of pushing a desired fight forward.

Cieslak elevated to WBC cruiserweight champion

The WBC decided Monday to move Michal Cieslak from interim cruiserweight titleholder to full champion.

The Mexico City, Mexico-based sanctioning body announced Cieslak's elevation to full champion on Monday.

The WBC also added that unified WBA/WBO cruiserweight champion David Benavidez is the Polish cruiserweight's mandatory challenger.

Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs), who won the unified titles with a sixth-round stoppage of Gilberto Ramirez on May 2, is expected to face Cieslak in a three-belt unification on December 12. The fight's victor will then be ordered to face The Ring and Zuffa cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia (31-0, 24 KOs) next, per the sanctioning body's ruling.

Cieslak (28-2, 22 KOs) won the interim WBC cruiserweight title with a fourth-round stoppage of former light heavyweight titleholder Jean Pascal in June 2025 but has been left waiting since.

Benavidez, who sits top of The Ring's rankings at both 175 and 200 pounds, also holds the WBC's light heavyweight crown. No. 5 on the pound-for-pound list, the 29-year-old three-division champion told The Ring's Mike Coppinger ringside at the Ryan Garcia-Conor Benn bill that he would not be moving back down in weight.

When asked for comment, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman told The Ring: "Cieslak is a tremendous fighter who has been waiting for his opportunity to shine for a long time and now will, against Benavidez."

Cieslak, The Ring's No. 4-ranked cruiserweight, previously made clear his discontent at being held out on the sidelines while being ready and physically able to feature without any news on a return date.

He told The Ring's Anson Wainwright in July of his continued frustration while his team intimated an October timeline was likely then in a homecoming fight, before this development.

Didn’t the WBC announce a few years ago that they were doing away with interim and regular “title belts?” I guess that didn’t last. We are now at the point where it seems like a large percentage of alphabet titles are being “won” in cupcake “vacant title” fights or when fighters are being “Moved up” from “regular” or “interim” to “full” alphabet belt holders after cupcake fights. FFS Cieslak’s big “title” win was more than a year ago against a 43-year-old who hadn’t won even a semi-meaningful fight since before COVID.

Sulaiman should have been jailed for corruption, bribery and seeking to destroy the sport, decades ago

Benavidez wins comfortably. Cieslak is a level below, same as Mikaelian was for Opetaia.

It's gonna take a Heavyweight to beat Benavidez or many more years for Father Time to do its thing. One or the other.

David Benavidez's cruiserweight unification expected to be shifted off December 12

David Benavidez’s planned cruiserweight unification title fight versus WBC champion Michal Cieslak will be moved off the planned December 12 date in the Phoenix area, an individual with a prominent voice in the matter told Boxing Scene Friday.

With this week’s announcement that the anticipated mega-fight in Cardiff, Wales, between two-time heavyweight champions Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will be staged December 11 on Netflix, the Benavidez-Cieslak handlers are looking at December 5 or possibly December 19, keeping the DAZN-streamed main event in Benavidez’s home state of Arizona.

Three-division champion Benavidez, 32-0 (26 KOs), won the WBO and WBA cruiserweight belts from former champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez by sixth-round knockout in May.

He then appeared in the same T-Mobile Arena ring last month for a faceoff with Zuffa Boxing and former IBF champion Jai Opetaia to hype a May 2027 showdown of unbeatens in their primes.

Benavidez, in the final bout of his agreement with promoter Sampson Lewkowicz and Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, will be a prohibitive betting favorite over Poland’s Cieslak, 28-2 (22 KOs), who was elevated from interim champion last month when ex-champion Noel Mikaelian opted to fight Opetaia rather than Benavidez.

The preferred date for Benavidez-Cieslak is December 5, the individual said, adding that WBC interim middleweight champion Jesus Ramos of Arizona could be added to the card after falling ill (food poisoning) before his September 19 defense versus Meiirim Nursultanov.

Benavidez starting own promotional journey after Cieslak fight

David Benavidez is ready to begin his own journey as a promoter after his fight with Michael Cieslak on December 5.
For the majority of his 13-year career, Benavidez and his manager Sampson Lewkowicz have been joint at the hip. But their fighter-manager relationship will be up after Benavidez's WBA, WBO and WBC cruiserweight unification with Cieslak.

The 29-year-old, who sits No. 5 on The Ring's pound-for-pound list, is prepared to keep working with PBC and Al Haymon, but as co-promoters.

"This is the last fight on my contract,” Benavidez explained on the Last Stand Podcast with host Brian Custer. “I've honored the contract. It’s been ten years, so a long time. I wouldn't say I outgrew Sampson but where I'm at in my career, he's done a wonderful job, one of the greatest of all time, but it's my time to do my own thing, like [Floyd] Mayweather and everyone with their own promotional company. It will be DB Promotions.

"The people I work with is Luis De Cubas, Al Haymon, TGB Promotions ... Sampson Lewkowicz, too – they've all been really good with me, so I want to stay on this side of the street ... I'm still PBC all the way."

Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) is in the market for a big fight. Assuming he beats Cieslak, he’s mentioned Ring and Zuffa cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia as an opponent he would like to face in May 2027.

The hard-hitting Australian isn’t the only fighter Benavidez has his eyes on. Oleksandr Usyk, The Ring’s heavyweight champion, is another bout he’s interested in.

For now, the Arizona native wants to focus on the task in front of him, and he can’t wait to put on a show.

“There’s a lot of things I can take advantage of with this guy,” Benavidez said. “He’s a big guy but he’s slow. I can attack the body, combinations; there are just so many things I can do. I’m going for the knockout.”

Cieslak is a solid fighter but he's 37 or 38 & has only fought against a 42 year old Jean Pascal in the last two years, winning in the 4th.

To put that in perspective, Pascal beat Brian Normans father in a boxing match TWO decades ago :OhYes:

Benavidez's speed & incredibly quick flurries should end this by the midway stage.

This will be Benavidez's first fight against a career Cruiserweight though.

Then hopefully we will see Benavidez v Opetaia in a true pick 'em fight.

Benavidez, Cieslak set for 3-belt cruiserweight unification bout

Also on PBC PPV card: Vergil Ortiz returns vs. Keith Thurman, Emiliano Vargas, Marco Romero, Nikita Tszyu in action

David Benavidez and Michal Cieslak will square off in a three-belt cruiserweight unification fight in the headliner of a PBC pay-per-view on DAZN on Dec. 5 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, PBC announced on Thursday.

The fight, which has been expected, will see Phoenix native Benavidez, the WBO and WBA titleholder, have a home area fight against WBC titlist Cieslak, who was recently elevated from interim status when Noel Mikaelian was stripped soon after ignoring a mandatory order to face Benavidez because he instead fought lineal champion Jai Opetaia in a ninth-round knockout loss on Sept. 12.

As expected, Vergil Ortiz Jr. will move up to middleweight and face Keith Thurman, who is also moving up in weight, in the scheduled 12-round co-feature.

“David Benavidez has been building his own legacy from the beginning,” promoter Sampson Lewkowicz said. “From when he became the youngest super middleweight world champion ever, to his time as light heavyweight king, and now as the unified cruiserweight champion, ‘The Mexican Monster’ hides from no one, and no one can stop him.”

Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs), 29, moved up to cruiserweight on May 2 and pummeled Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez into a sixth-round knockout to win the unified title at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Recently, Benavidez made the decision to remain at cruiserweight and vacated the WBC light heavyweight title as well as the WBA “regular” belt.

After Opetaia defeated Mikaelian, Benavidez was in the ring talking up a showdown with Opetaia for May but Cieslak is up next.

“I’m excited to be fighting in Arizona once again,” said Benavidez, who has not fought at home since knocking out David Lemieux in the third round in a WBC interim light heavyweight title bout in 2022 at the same arena. “It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here. I’m gonna give the fans in my home state of Arizona a great performance on Dec. 5.”

Cieslak (28-2, 22 KOs), 37, of Poland, has won seven consecutive fights — all by knockout — since suffering a knockdown in a unanimous decision loss challenging Lawrence Okolie for the WBO title in 2022.

Cieslak won the vacant WBC interim title in his last fight, a one-sided fourth-round knockout of former light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal in Pascal’s hometown of Laval, Canada, in June 2025.

“I’ve been waiting for this opportunity my whole life,” Cieslak said. “This is exactly why I’ve been training — to test myself and compete on the biggest stage against fighters like Benavidez. I’m confident, but there’s no point in talking nonsense. The focus has to be on hard work. Those who know me understand that I’m not going there just to show up. I will bring all three belts back to Poland.”

Ortiz (24-0, 22 KOs), 28, of Grand Prairie, Texas, has been idle since blitzing Erickson Lubin in a second-round knockout to retain the WBC interim junior middleweight for the second time last November. A major fight with Jaron “Boots” Ennis was in the works but fell apart when Ortiz sued his promoter, Golden Boy, over contract issues, which were eventually settled ahead of court-ordered arbitration.

Part of the settlement included a re-worked deal that will keep him tied to Golden Boy for three more fights, the first of which will be against heavy underdog Thurman.

“I am pumped to share the ring with a former world champion in Keith Thurman, who I highly respect for taking the fight when everyone else decided to hide behind politics,” Ortiz said. “Being the co-main for Benavidez is an honor as I respect him equally as a fighter and a person. It’s gonna be a great night of boxing and overall I’m just happy to be active again.”

In just his second fight since 2022, mainly due to injuries, former unified welterweight titleholder Thurman (31-2, 23 KOs), 37, of St. Petersburg, Florida, suffered a one-sided sixth-round knockout loss challenging WBC junior middleweight titlist Sebastian Fundora on March 28.

“I’m back with a vengeance,” Thurman said. “I’m bringing the heat in December with an action fight against Vergil Ortiz — another young lion. I fight the best and the gladiator in me is not done yet.”

Ortiz, manager Rick Mirigian and Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya would have preferred a fresher opponent but Thurman was the only name opponent available and willing to fight him.

“There’s a reason why Vergil Ortiz Jr. is the most avoided fighter without a belt,” De La Hoya said. “As a former world champion, Keith Thurman is a crafty, experienced fighter who has been in there with the very best and will give Vergil some good

Vargas also on card

Also on the card, Top Rank junior welterweight Emiliano Vargas (18-0, 15 KOs), 22, of Las Vegas, the 2025 Fight Freaks Unite prospect of the year and the son of former two-time junior middleweight titlist Fernando Vargas, will face an opponent to be determined in a 10-rounder.

“This year has been a true blessing for me,” Vargas said. “I started off with great performances in February and June, and outside the ring, I had some incredible opportunities like being part of the Super Bowl halftime show with Bad Bunny, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at a Mexico game during the World Baseball Classic, and taking my first steps into the world of film. These are experiences I will never forget, but I am very clear that my priority and my passion will always be boxing.

“I want to end this year on a high note by delivering a spectacular performance for my people and showing why I am ready to take on the biggest challenges of my career.”

Also on the main card will be two eight-rounders: Blue-chip middleweight prospect Marco Romero, who will have his third fight since signing with PBC, and Australian junior middleweight Nikita Tszyu, the son of Hall of Famer Kostya Tszyu and younger brother of former junior middleweight titlist Tim Tszyu. Their opponents are to be determined.

Romero (16-0, 14 KOs), 20, of Overland Park, Kansas, is coming off a highlight-reel one-punch first-round knockout of Matias Ferreira on Oct. 17 on the Sebastian Fundora-Ermal Hadribeaj undercard.

Romero, who has gained tremendous experience sparring in Montreal with super middleweight titleholders Christian Mbilli and Osleys Iglesias, was a standout amateur, winning 23-national titles, most notably a 2024 National Golden Gloves title and being named the tournament’s most outstanding boxer.

“I’m excited to come right back, which shows me how much PBC believes in me, especially by putting me on another big card like this,” Romero said. “To put me on another monster card with ‘The Monster’, David Benavidez, I couldn’t be more grateful.”

Tszyu (12-0-1, 10 KOs), 28, a southpaw, will make his United States debut. He is coming off a 12-round split draw in a regional title bout with undefeated countryman Ben Mahoney in August.

The fight on Dec. 5 will bring Tszyu to the same arena where Kostya Tszyu stopped Sharmba Mitchell in the third round of their rematch to retain the lineal/IBF junior welterweight title in 2004, the final victory of his career before losing his last bout and the title to Ricky Hatton seven months later.

“I’m excited to be making my U.S. debut,” Tszyu said. “To be on a massive David Benavidez card is truly an honor. He’s the most exciting fighter in the world. He comes forward, he hurts people and he never gives anyone an easy night. That’s the kind of fighting I respect. I also like to fight with that warrior mentality. Arizona is also where my father had his last victory, so it holds an important place in my heart.”

Benavidez Intends To ‘Make A Statement’ By Battering Cieslak

David Benavidez knows that he’s supposed to dominate Michal Cieslak.

While he is confident that he’ll beat the WBC cruiserweight champion in a DAZN Pay-Per-View main event December 5 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, that doesn’t mean it’ll be a walk in the park.

“He poses some challenges,” Benavidez said during a press conference Wednesday in Los Angeles. “He has good combinations, he has a good jab, he just beat Jean Pascal in his last fight. I take nothing away from him. He’s a great fighter.”

Benavidez, The Ring’s No. 1 cruiserweight contender for Jai Opetaia’s title, will look to added Cieslak’s WBC belt to his WBA and WBO crowns. The former super middleweight champion and reigning WBC light heavyweight beltholder has enjoyed his time in his new weight class.

In his cruiserweight debut, the 29-year-old Phoenix native annihilated former unified champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez, stopping him toward the end of six one-sided rounds May 2.

Cieslak, from Kozienice, Poland, hasn’t been seen since stopping Pascal in the fourth round of their bout in June 2025 to win the vacant WBC interim title. The sanctioning body eventually elevated him to full champion after stripping Noel Mikaelian of that belt.

Mikaelian was initially ordered to face Benavidez. He opted to fight Opetaia, who stopped him in the ninth round September 12.

Immediately after, Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) promised Opetaia (31-0, 24 KOs) that he would fight him in May 2027, on Cinco De Mayo weekend in Las Vegas.

That bout could be on the table for Benavidez, but for now he wants to focus on Cieslak (28-2, 22 KOs). Although he’s well aware that he’s the heavy favorite, he promised to dish out the sort of beating that will leave everyone awestruck.

“I’m gonna make a statement,” Benavidez said, “and show everybody that I’m the best in the world.”
