Aziz Abdul, grandson of Idi Amin and amateur boxer, disqualified from second international tournament
Aziz Abdul, grandson of former African dictator Idi Amin Dada and super-heavyweight amateur boxer, has been disqualified from a second international tournament for fouling his opponent.
The most recent DQ came for knocking out Egypt’s Mohamed Hossen, after he turned away following the bell to end their finals bout on Friday (October 23) in the African Boxing Championships in Nairobi.
The foul resulted in the 25-year-old Ugandan Abdul being thrown out of the ring and tournament officials stripping him of the silver medal he’d already earned with victories over Nigeria's Kenneth Anigboro in the quarterfinals and Mbangi Mukewa of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the semifinals.
Abdul was also disqualified in the third round of his opening-round bout against England's Damar Thomas in this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after a second warning for headbutting.
Before the Commonwealth Games, Aziz made headlines by asserting a victory in that tournament would anoint him, "the new king of Scotland,"
The “King of Scotland” reference was a famous quote by his grandfather, who was better known as the "Butcher of Uganda" during his eight-year rule, which was reportedly plagued by human rights abuses, political retribution, ethnic persecution, and economic hardship.
A former Ugandan military officer, Amin seized control of Uganda’s government via a military coup and served as their third president starting in 1971 until being overthrown in 1979. Some human rights groups estimate that between 100,000 and 500,000 people were killed under his regime.
Grandfather Amin was also a boxer and held the Ugandan light-heavyweight title for nine years in the 1950s.
Also known as "Ringo," Aziz never met his grandfather, who died when he was a toddler.
