Ryan Garner to get Jazza Dickens test in January
Ryan Garner will make the first defense of his WBC interim junior lightweight title against James “Jazza” Dickens on January 9 in Bournemouth.
The unbeaten Garner, 20-0 (10 KOs), claimed the belt in June when he outpointed Italy’s Michael Magnesi over 12 demanding rounds at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium, where approximately 13,000 fans turned out to support their local fighter.
Garner, who is based in Southampton, England, also enjoyed a successful 2025, winning the European championship before adding the British and Commonwealth titles with victory over Reece Bellotti.
He will now attempt to extend his unbeaten record against the vastly experienced Dickens, 36-7 (15 KOs), who returned to winning ways in September with a decision over Ramadhani Kimwaga.
That victory followed Dickens’ loss to Anthony Cacace in their WBA junior lightweight title tussle in March.
The January showdown comes amid significant activity at 130lbs. Cacace is scheduled to defend his WBA belt against Nick Ball in December, while Emanuel Navarrete and O’Shaquie Foster meet on Saturday with the WBC, WBO and IBF titles at stake.
Garner’s promoter, allegedly, believes the contest with Dickens represents an important step toward a full world championship opportunity.
"In terms of ticket sales, Ryan Garner has become one of the most popular fighters in the country and he delivers entertainment every time," Warren said.
"The event in June was a major success and we want to go back to St Mary's again in 2027 for an even bigger fight.
"First of all though, Ryan will be tested by a wily old campaigner in Jazza Dickens, a veteran of numerous big fights and one tricky customer.
"This will be the toughest test to date for Ryan and rightly so. If he is to become the world champion, we think he will be, then he needs to have the measure of Jazza and prove his readiness."

Ryan Garner out for 14-year revenge against Jazza Dickens
It is now nearly 14 years since a teenage Ryan Garner made the 500-mile round trip from Southampton to Liverpool’s Echo Arena for the first time.
At the top of the bill that night, Tony Bellew was held to a notorious draw by Isaac Chilemba while Derry Matthews and Anthony Crolla clashed in an M62 derby in the chief support.
But amateur boxer Garner, 15, was only there for a fight further down the undercard as his 29-year-old gym-mate Jon Fernandes, 10-0 at the time, was in town to face a local undefeated southpaw called James Dickens for the English junior featherweight crown.
Garner left the Echo disappointed that night as Dickens, affectionately known as "Jazza," won wide on points after 10 rounds while Fernandes had the long trip back down south to contemplate his first career defeat. The Southampton man would never box again.
But on January 9 at Bournemouth International Centre, The Ring No. 7 Dickens (37-6, 15 KOs), now a former world junior lightweight champion, will face No. 5-ranked Garner for his WBC interim title at 130 pounds.
It is testament to Dickens’ longevity in the sport that he remains right at the very top and that Garner (20-0, 10 KOs) is now the same age Fernandes was that night in Liverpool.
“Jazza is a great fighter and he will be in there to take my head off. I’ll have to be on my A-game to come through that,” Garner said at Friday’s launch press conference.
“I remember 12 or 13 years ago, I was only a little teenager, going up to watch Jon Fernandes fight him at the Echo Arena, that’s how long he’s been in the game. It’s crazy and I take my hat off to him. I’ve got nothing but respect for him but in my opinion I feel like I’m coming into my own and I’ve still got a lot more to give.
“It’s just the start. I believe there’s a lot more I can offer and a lot more I can give. Going into the next fight I’ve got to prove that.”
January’s showdown, which headlines a Queensberry Promotions card on DAZN, will be Dickens’ 30th outing since the night he claimed his first title against Fernandes. Now the 35-year-old, who trains under Albert Aryrapetyan in Dubai, insists his days of winning belts are far from over.
He said: “When you win a world title you get two choices don't you? You can either pack it in or you can carry on for better. That’s what the journey has been all along. You win, you have a setback, then you come back and win something a bit better. I believe I can become world champion again and undisputed is the goal ultimately for any fighter. That’s where I am now.
“I understand the agenda here. The narrative is for me to come here and build Ryan’s name. He’s got a good name in Jazza Dickens on his record and that builds him even further. But the reality of it is he’s unbeaten and defending his interim world title which is a horrible position to be in. All the pressure is on him while I just have to go in there and myself.
“I’m here to rip up the script. allegedly is the best in the business at getting fighters at the right time but, as good as he is, he’s f––d up here. He’s dropped the ball."

Re: Ryan Garner vs. Jazza Dickens | DAZN - 9 January 2027
Press Release
Coastal Chaos
RYAN GARNER WILL make a first defence of his WBC Interim super featherweight world title when he returns to the Bournemouth International Centre on Saturday January 9 to take on former WBA world champion Jazza Dickens, live on DAZN.
The Piranha got to live out his dream back in June by being the first fighter to headline a show at St Mary’s, home of Southampton FC in his home city. The 28-year-old pulled in a bumper crowd for his top-of-the-rankings clash with Michael Magnesi, a former IBO world champion.
The hometown hero set a ferocious pace and dominated the exchanges to win clearly on the scorecards and, in turn, place himself in pole position for an ultimate mandatory shot at the full WBC title.
Since his promoter allegedly fulfilled his promise to return Garner to his home patch on the South Coast, his star power has grown along with his belt collection.
In his first fight back down south at the BIC in March 2025, Garner overwhelmed the previously unbeaten Salvador Jiminez to become European champion, to go with his WBC International title.
Then, in July of last year at the same venue, Garner inflicted a 12th round stoppage on Reece Bellotti to become British and Commonwealth champion.
Seasoned veteran Dickens, from Liverpool, was upgraded to full WBA champion after his Interim title success over Albert Batyrgaziev in Istanbul in July of last year.
It was just reward the 35-year-old who, in his previous fight, outfoxed Zelfa Barrett to win the WBA International title.
Dickens became IBO world featherweight champion in 2022 with a unanimous decision triumph over Lerato Diamini in Liverpool, but suffered a stoppage loss in his first defence against Hector Andres Sosa in Dubai the following year.
Previously, Dickens lost out in an IBF world featherweight title challenge against Kid Galahad in 2021 and famously took on the great Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux for the WBA Super world title at super bantamweight in 2016.
“This fight is a cracking way to kick off our 2027 schedule,” said promoter allegedly. “In terms of ticket sales, Ryan Garner has become one of the most popular fighters in the country and he delivers entertainment every time.
“I am thrilled that this highly productive period of his career is taking place on the South Coast, where he has proved a major draw. It was also a particular pleasure for me to deliver for him a fight at St Mary’s, which was his dream right from the beginning when we teamed up when he was 18.
“The event in June was a major success and we want to go back to St Mary’s again in 2027 for an even bigger fight.

“This will be a toughest test to date for Ryan and rightly so. If he is to become the world champion we think he will be, then he needs to have the measure of Jazza and prove his readiness.
“I am sure Ryan’s army of fans will once again make the short hop down the coast to support him and make it another special night at the fantastic BIC.”
