Has anyone seen the entire Lyle-Shavers fight? The footage that I have seen skips a lot of it. If so, was it fun to watch?

The full version is available silent. It's a great fight but would arguably be more enjoyable with the ambience of crowd noise and commentary. And more than one camera angle.

I dont know if the Lyle vrs Shavers fight was aired live over the radio in Denver,
like a lot if not most of his earlier fights there.
Lyle was really big there in the early to mid 1970's.
(although there was some loss of interest in him after the Quarry fight
and particularly the loss to Ali in 1975.)

Ron Lyle vrs Jimmy Ellis. July 1974
that was (reportedly) the "greatest fight" seen in Denver history.

i just came across this radio interview with Ron Lyle that has been buried on youtube for the past 14 years.
It says it's from 1974 however but actualluy it is from 1971 because it is mentioned that he had just "TKO'd" someone in Las Vegas. which would have been Eddie Land which happened at the Silver Slipper in Las Vegas in September 1971.

Has anyone seen Lyle W12 Bonavena? How'd the fight go, what are your impressions? Lyle won legitimately, from what I've read. But the scorecards were bizarre.

Who did Lyle beat for the IBL championship? Are there any radio broadcasts of the Denver Rocks or other IBL teams available for purchase or trade?

Thanks. Can anyone explain how one judge scored it 52-46 for Lyle? It's a five point must system. A score of "46" would mean Bonavena lost 14 rounds, even though it's a 12 round fight. Maybe the news wire made a typographical error?

That judge just may have been a "Denverite".

Funny.

But I'm guessing the judge's real score was 56-52 for Lyle. That translates into 7-3-2 in rounds (or 8-3-1) after factoring in the tenth round point deduction for Lyle. It's possible this judge might have given Bonavena just "3" points for one of the rounds.

The scorecard reading 55-51 probably translates into 8-4 in rounds for Lyle.. Bonavena must have received just three points in one round (maybe the sixth or eigth), when apparently he was stunned.

The 56-55 score probably means 5-3-4 in rounds for Lyle.

That's actually a well-known photo of Ron. I remember seeing it multiple times in the 1970s boxing magazines. I agree that he looks menacing and powerful.

I'm sure you're aware that Ron was hopelessly over the hill at the time of this fight. I haven't seen it, but I seriously doubt he looked good. That's probably why Cooney's managers selected him as Gerry's next opponent.

The Lyle of the the 1971 - 1977 period would starched Neuman, quickly and brutally.

that particular photo looks very similar (if not almost exactly)
like the photograph of Ron Lyle punching Jimmy Ellis up against the ropes
in the book OFF THE ROPES. Would'nt you agree ?

I don't remember that particular photo, although I did peruse "Off the Ropes" in the bookstore, reading certain passages. I thought it was well-written, detail-rich, and interesting (based on what little I read).

The Lyle vs. Ellis photo I remember most depicted Ron swinging a powerful left-hook to Ellis's body, in center ring, with Jimmy standing straight-up, elbows tucked, possible blocking the punch.

Ellis, of course, was washed-up at the time of this bout. But he still must have been pretty good if he was able to hang in there with Lyle for the full route. At this stage of Jimmy's career, he may still have qualified, just marginally, as a top-ten contender, or no worse than top-15.

I wonder how Ellis, in his own mind and based on experience, would compare Lyle and Bugner, given that he fought them both.
