Gammer vs Steeds.

Post by stujones »

I suppose this thread can double as a prediction thread, but anyone know the promotional status of this fight. Paul Boyce won the purse bids (admittedly for Williams vs Gammer originally) but both BBN and Boxrec have it as a Matchroom promotion.

Why isn't Boyce promoting it?

I think this is going to be one of those fights thats not pretty to watch , but still entertaining. Steeds is very raw, and walks in throwing punches with his head down.
Gammer should really be a level above Steeds skillwise, but he may get dragged into a brawling type of fight.
I can see Steeds putting up a brave performance before running out of steam somewhere between rounds 8-10

Gammer's already beaten Steeds once and should repeat the win. Clear points win or late rounds stoppage. Steeds has gained experience since their six rounder but Gammer even more so.

Gammer on a late stoppage for me too. Should be good while it lasts though Steeds wont go down without a fight!

Gammer to win in an exciting fight

Scott has the edge in stamina, ring smarts and punch power

the fact that Gammer is no huge HW by todays standards but has been able to win against behemoths like Carl Baker and the outragious draw with Kalikuscas show how strong Gammer is

gammer v Sprott wud be good..... also gammer v Vidoz...krasnici and even sam would be at the right time now

as for the promotional side?...boyce has done well to get Gammer to the british title on the back of 4 round fights and only 16 odd starts over god knows how many years ...... but Gammer should be really propelled into bigger fights now

Same old same old from Gammer to be honest. He's got good handspeed, generally does things well, but just doesn't flow.

I've still yet to see a 5 punch combination from him - without him regrouping. This is Sparring, on the bag or in the ring.

In this day an age he could go far, but I would just like to see more flow. Especially as he isn't the biggest naturally or the biggest puncher. I would just like to see a 7,8,9 or even 10+ combination. He had plenty of opportunities tonight.

I said from the 5th after a bright start, that if Gammer didn't stop Steeds I would be dissapointed - and I just had to be. From the 8th on, I thought one concerted round throwing over 100 punches would have done it.

Perhaps I'm expecting too much, fellow prospects like Povetkin wouldn't have done it..... but the excellent champions of the past would have.

That's almost word-for-word what I thought. Gammer looks to have a lot of potential, but there's just something missing. I wanted him to show some killer instinct and really put his punches together, but it just wasn't there. I'd like to see him step up though because he could well be the type who steps up his level of performance depending on the opposition...

Glahn,

If the stories I have heard about him are true, then there is plenty of instinct with him (he is a apparently a nasty piece of goods) - but he just cannot throw the combinations, never has.

For the most part during his amateur and pro days he never needed too..... excepted when he met Kevin Evans, and he got found wanting. He never (used to anyway) throw more than a 4 punch combination on the bag without regrouping. I just hope he can learn from Joe Calzaghe.

Everytime, I see Gammer win a biggish fight, I'm always thinking - why didn't Evans ever turn pro - he's younger than Scott.

When ever I have watched Evans box as an am he has always looked exciting/decent. As you say Stu, shame he didnt turn over.

Was it you who said Gammer is banned from ever boozer in his home town? HE looks like he would be a right handful in a streetfight, combos or not!

It was both me and forum member Lamphey (I think) who said it.

Still think it is true, but I have heard that many people think he has matured alot and the continued bans are a bit out of order.

Don't mess with the Kevin Evans also! He is one of 3 (I think) brothers, and he is the smallest..... and his old man is still a bit dangerous even if he does look a bit like butterbean now. They have got a reputation greater than the Gammers (Scott and his brother). I think the pubs in Carmarthen are too frightend to bar them.

I favour Gammer over Williams now, also fights with Long and Sprott would be good for first part of 07

Have'nt seen much of Kevin Evans, other that the commonwealth final against Price earlier this year,so can't really comment.I thought he was in his thirties though? I'am sure I heard the commentators mention that he will be too old to compete in the next commonwealths.

First time I have seen Gammer live, and I can only echo what has already been said on here.Steeds is pretty limited and does'nt have the power to have hurt Gammer,so Scott should have really looked to have stopped him.
To be fair,he did breeze through the fight, and he looks like he could make the step up to a higher level(although I would'nt go labelling him along with Povetkin just yet as someone has on here!!)

Scott should get his backers to do all they can to get Williams into the ring.He is ripe for the taking.Would be a good name, and good step up at this point in Gammers career.

Is there any reason as to why Evans did'nt turn over?
In the commonwealth final,Price was too good for him and outclassed him,but Evans' record is pretty good(think he got a bronze at a worlds or euros a few years back)

The next time I watch a fight involving Steeds, Simpkin or Kenna please shoot me.

Level 2 of heavyweights in the UK are a terrible, boring bunch.

As for Gammer, he strikes me a poor mans Scott Welch. Personally I think Williams would spark him out.

Gammer boxed well, showed good variety and speed for a big man, swiped a bit predictably with the left hook at times but it is his honey punch. I think Gammer showed good fitness and paced himself well, Steeds was a bit one dimensional, boreing in head down and throwing big overhand rights.

One aspect of Gammer's game that impressed me was his body punching which is often neglected by the big men. He found Steeds body well particularly when he had his man pinned on the ropes. I think if Williams was to come in like King Kong against Gammer then the Welshman has a good chance.

I think the Commonwealth title is a real target for Gammer, maybe world honours is too much but he has the potential to perhaps make things interesting against the Europeans...Virchis, Vidoz etc i don't think he is a million miles behind those two fighters.

Gammer has a good shout at euro level

his ko ratio drops to something like 9 in 17 which would suggest he's a light puncher...that however is not the case..scott digs well and has simply been in with a decent variety of boxers

TT, I posted that a couple of times.
Funny enough I was back home in Lamphey (about 3 miles from Gammer's home) a few weeks ago and took a look at the banned list in the local pub. I'm pleased to say he is no longer on it. :D
Former Light-Welter Mike Morrison used to be on it as well but his name has now been removed too.

From what I gather, Gammer is a bit handy on the street. I'm pretty certain he's done some bird for it as well. :o

I was in school with a few of his uncles. Bunch of wankers but you wouldn't mess with them because of who they associated with.

c2ute wrote:Kevin is still only 28, he never turned pro because he was promised a coaching job with the Welsh ABA for approx £30k per annum(they then changed their mind), no promoter offered him any money to turn over, so he is starting up his own gym in Carmarthen instead.
He also had a lot of niggling injuries but they have all cleared up now and i'm sure if anyone offered him afew quid he would esp as he is seeing how well Scott is doing.
I also thought it had a lot to do with the Olympics..... Evans (at least in the papers) was saying he would turn over after the Olympics, then he wouldn't qualify - so he'd wait four years, and again.

I think by the Commonwealths his desire was gone a bit and at 27/28 he was probably too old (in his view) to really make a good go as a pro. Thats the age Audley turned over.

Is the Father's court case involving a very rich buisnessman in Carmarthen, or is that a seperate story?
