New Supermiddle weight champ

Post by Freiheit »

Thursday night in St Petersburg, Russia georgian David Gogiya beat reigning champ Mger Mkrtchian on a split decisions for the European championship. Seems like its hard to make a succesfull defense of that title these days. The last time someone made a succesfull defense of it was Danilo Haussler in may 2003.

Since then these fighters have won the title but either not defended it lost it in the first defense:
Mads Larsen over Danilo Haussler
Rudy Markussen over Danilo Haussler
Vitali Tsypko over Brian Magee
Jackson Chanet over Vitali Tsypko
Mger Mkrtchian over Jackson Chanet
David Gogiya over Mger Mkrtchian

I wonder if Froch will still go after this title? I mean, there isn't really much else for him to aim for right now.

I think Froch can pretty much side step the title and look soon at the WBC route anyway.

I'm think Glenn Cateley or even Matthew Barney.

It'd be pretty funny if Froch got the Kessler fight and not Joe...

Still not convinced Joe even wants the Kessler fight.

Anyway - I'd be pleased if EITHER Kessler or Calzaghe got the opertunity to shut Froch's mouth for good.
It's not like Froch has done anything or shown any talent that makes him deserve a tittle shot.
But I would still enjoy seeing him brutaly beaten, exposed and ridiculed.

For what it's worth, if I was managing Froch I'd get him a shot at the Georgian. Sit on that title until the unified belt holders fragment -- either due to further unification (about as likely as me winning a Pulitzer) or moving up in weight/arbitrarily being stripped.

Get some 12 round championship class experience and some nice pay days, eventually the WBCrackwhores make you mandatory. Raise your PR profile as "undefeated king of Europe", the guy who defended the title no-one else could.

Hopefully hten he gets a shot against a co-challenger who is less formidable than one of the unified champs.

<humour> After all, it worked for David Haye..? </humour>

I do hope Dodson sits him on his arse, though...

Joe or Kessler would beat Froch I agree.

He'd probably moan about wanting to get a rematch though.
