what if? jimmy wilde vs ricardo lopez, battle of flyweights

Post by dominicanthug »

Jimmy wilde is consider by many to have been the greatest flyweight ever, he stood 5'2 and a half and beat opponents twice his size. and people where bewildered by his power, what would have happen in your opinion if ricardo finito lopez took on jimmy wilde, i think it would be a great fight, hard to figure out, thoughts on the outcome?

From what i heard of Wilde he was a terror a skinny kid who could punch like a heavyweight, Lopez on the other hand was a smooth boxer-puncher while not as explosive as wilde could still knock you out with either hand. I say Lopez will be smart and stay on the out side and box his way to a UD but as great as Lopez was i won't be surprise if he gets dropped once or twice, Lopez by unanimouse Decision.

I never seen Wilde fight but from what iv'e read and heard he was so frail that officials were often afraid to let him fight thinking that he might get seriously injured or killed, he knocked out men that outweight him by 20 pounds or more, i beleive he went 101-0 before his first lose a huge puncher in either hand.

My opinion on who wins the fight may be biase cause of the fact that i never seen wilde fight and also because i feel that fighters now in days are better than fighters of the early 1900's. I know some may say Lopez was never realy tested well it wasn't his fault that he was such a small guy and maybe his competition was tough he just made it them look weak(look at Roy Jones) i feel if Lopez would have fought Carbajal, Gonzalez or Morel he would have easly picked them apart. Take a look at Saman Soraturong he KO'ed Gonzalez in 6 rounds when just two years before that Lopez destroyed him in 2 rounds.

It's just my opinion, i know many experts probably won't agree.

He might have picked apart Chiquita or Carbajal if he'd fought them; I only wish he had tried. Ricardo Lopez was a terrific fighter, but I think you have to take into account that he never made those fights when you evaluate him in a historical sense.

I actually would have liked Carbajal's chances better. He never would have been able to outbox Finito, but he could match Lopez' power and chin. It would have been a kind of test that Lopez never faced; a fighter who could take you out at any time (ask Chiquita or Jorge Arce), but also could take an enormous amount of punishment without going down.

Chiquita's a different story. He was a better boxer than MC but probably not as good as Finito. And he didn't have Carbajal's chin. He was KO'd three times because he took huge shots in fights he was winning; he was actually beating the crap out of Sorjaturong when he took a shot in the seventh round and couldn't recover.

I'm not even going to speculate on Finito against a guy who retired in 1923. Wilde was 91-0-10 when he took his first loss, for the record.

Your right i think carbajal would give Lopez more trouble that Gonzalez but i just can't see him loosing this one.

I believe the prime Carbajal would have gotten to Lopez maybe a couple of times if they went at it 10 times, just on sheer determination. But they never considered making the fight until 1997, and by then it would have been a mismatch.

A few months back, I said Carbajal would have beaten him easily, but the more I thought about it, I realized that it was the fan in me talking--I was always a fan of Carbajal's, and I was happy he got to retire as a world champion for the fourth time. That fight against Arce is part of the reason I'd give him a shot against anyone. He was getting pummeled from post to post, but he wouldn't quit coming in, and eventually Arce made a mistake and Carbajal got him.

The other thing I remember is some of the fighters who were on that card. Erik Morales, Carbajal, Arce and...Butterbean. Yeech.

It would be a tough fight, both had excellent chins, both had great power but i would have to give the better boxing ability to Lopez. I don't think he'll KO Carbajal thats out of the picture but he may stop him on cuts or take a dec.
