Screwjobs in boxing history........(help me out)

Post by Iownthisforum »

im writing a paper in my college writing class on why americans no longer value boxing. I'm trying to use examples of screwjobs in the history of boxing. Can someone help me find press row scorings of some controversial descions or polls on what the public thot who won?

fights im tryna use are like:

De La Hoya vs. Felix Trinidad
Chris Byrd vs. Fres Oquendo
James Toney vs. Sam Peter

if someone can find and post press row scorings of these fights or polls to show that the public didn't agree with the judges hook it up cuz i need these statistics for my essay.

any screwjob fight will do if u can think of a bullshit descion in recent memory.

Even if you can't find the opinions of the press about controversial decisions, I think it is sufficient just to say that controversial decisions is one reason why boxing is not as popular in America as in the past. However, I think that bad decisions is not the only reason. You also have to look at the fact that there is more than one boxing organization, corrupt rankings, lack of television exposure on free tv, and the increase in popularity of other sports like football and basketball.

Toney vs. Peter?! Are you serious? That was more of a difference of opinion in a close fight than a screwjob. When people call robbery on a fight like that it totally dulls the effect of a real "screwjob."

I was watching the fight the other day and rewinding rounds, and after 7 I had it 4-2-1 For Peter before I had to actual accomplish something with my Sunday.

There have been many screwjobs in boxing history but this still stands fresh in my mind because I was actually sober when I watched this fight but when I saw the decision I thought I was high or something.

Juan Urango UD12 Nauofel Ben Rabah was also an absolutely horrible decision. Being INCREDIBLY generous i could only give Urango for or 5 rounds. I'm a big Urango fan, but he stole that belt.

I think Felix won, but at the rate of about 7-5 in rounds. 10-2 and 12-0 seems WAY to high. Also, I had Hatton winning by 3 points, 7-5 in rounds with a knockdown. Hatton/Collazo was close, but I think Hatton won. By no means it was a robbery. Same with Peter/Toney. I think Toney had won the 1st and only time I watched it, but by no means would I call Peter winning a robbery....

None of these fights where particularly screw jobs. There are better examples given. Holyfield vs Lewis is the most infamous, but plenty of other fights pissed off the boxing public, if not the general public.

Bad judging is only one part of the boxing turn off though. The main reason in my opinion is that the other sports got better at promoting how exciting their sports and their athletes were. Basketball matured from a college sport to a merchandizing bonanza. Athletes like Jordon, Bryant, Shaq were made into the sort of super-athletes that boxers like Robinson, Louis, Ali used to be thought as. Other sports just saturated the market and boxing had nothing more to offer in terms of excitment than it did in 1920s. Hell, even other combat sports like K1 moved into boxings niche with high glamour shows with more matchups leading to a final. They made their sport more entertaining.

That's my theory.

I had 2, 5 for Toney
and 4 was even.

Anybody that reports to the general public that fights like Peter vs. Toney was a robbery is hurting boxing. All the general public hears is "robbery, robbery, robbery" when most of the "robberies" aren't robberies at all. When you hear that all the time, why would you become a fan? And if you do, you're coming into it with an already generalized opinion of scoring. They say that judging is hurting boxing. No. Granted, judging can be better but reporting needs to be better. Boxing writers/commentators around the world need to take a look at what they're sending out. They are sending out their opinions. The same as a judge is sending out his opinion. Difference is, the judge has been trained and is qualified to score that fight. In most cases, even if you disagree with that judge, that judge can give you justification as to why he scored the fight that way. We need to think long and hard before we say the word "robbery" because by saying that word when it's not necessary... we are hurting boxing. We as in the fans, the writers, the commentators.

I agree that there are actually relatively few roberies. Trinidad-DLH was a close fight.
