You can't join for free! There's a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly fee that one must pay and the New York Times has it's entire archive online! You do know what an archive is don't you? But for the record...the New York Times is the single most researched newspaper in the world, so you most certainly are not going to find anything unheard of about boxing in it's pages!

Thanks, Senya - do you know if there was mandatory nose protection for these exhibition bouts?Senya13 wrote:It happened in summer 1978. As far as I can tell Ali's last "real" exhibition -- how is that for an oxymoron -- was agaisnt pro hockey player Dave Semenko in 1983 -- 6000 fans were there and Ali was moving fairly well. It was the "main event" of a kickboxing event!
The Tubbs &Witherspoon exhibitions were public sparring sessions done to promote the Witherspoon-Tubbs fight a few days later.
Thanks for the corrections on the transliterations for the Russian boxers.
I beleive Ali held exhibitions on Dec 3, 1982 in the UAR -- he was scheduled for that Sunday as well but bad ticket sales forced a cancellation.
All info from CONTEMPORANEOUS newspaper reports.
By the way, at the same time Ali was married to Veronica he was holding out Keisha (the woman who sued him in 1985) as his wife -- in fact, some ten years earlier he introduced her on the Dinah Shore show as his wife -- curious I ahve never seen much on ALi having been married under Islamic law to more than one woman at the same time.
Finally, and not unimportanbtly, Ali's booth fight marks the last time that I know of that a champ worked the booths.

Jan 14 Tony Tubbs Atlanta, GA Exh 4! have to admit I didn't realise that. I assume due to Alis health and age they were very playfull and gentle 'sparring sessions'?

wow i always thought that the berbick fight was the last time he put on the gloves anywhere.....are there any pics or video footage of these exhibitions because months after the berbick fight he was diagnosed with parkinsons...im pretty sure these exhibitions couldn't have been that playful cuz he was still getting hit...you learn something new every day
