Sam Baroudi....double tragedy

Post by Jaclem »

Because it's such a major part of the Ezzard Charles story, many people know that Charles killed Sam Baroudi in the ring.

Not so well known is that Baroudi himself killed a fighter in the ring...just six months before his own death.

The fighter was named Glen Newton Smith, and the fight was on August 15th, 1947 in Philadelphia.

Simonpure sent me a personal message saying he recalled a fighter who was involved in both sides of this tragedy, but couldn't pin down the name.so, thanks to him I started digging in and finally came up with it.

This doesn't show as a fatality on either fighters record in BoxRec, so maybe an editor can add it.

Aas far as Simonpure and I know, this situation is unique.

Unfortunately, it isn't. Simon Byrne, Bert McCarthy and Emiliano Valdez all experienced two death fights first as the survivor and then as the deceased. And there are others.

There's a landmark work on the subject of ring deaths available on the internet, and it's an incredible repository of information that could and should be added to BoxRec. It's a report by Joseph R. Svinth based on the data collected by Manuel Velazquez. It has great analysis of the data, and the list of the death fights is by far the most comprehensive in existence. Here are the links:

Thanks gensu...will check it out. Maybe I shouldn't have included Simon in thinking the situation was unique...just assumed he did because he referred to knowing of one situation..could have been aware of more..just not who.

Be careful about entering those bouts. Amateurs, sparring, exhibition and others are included.
