Don't you think the hype around Carter has to do with sentimentality and a groundswell of media attention? Or do you think he was all that the movie purports him to be?
If he was innocent it was tough luck for the guy for sure...but it doesn't make him the bigger than life fighter that hollywood has portrayed. Why are you so surprised at the pick? I've seen most of his fights and caught one live. He was good but Julian was a cut above IMHO.
Most of all in this specific case Carter would be there for Julian to score. And that's really bad for any opponent of his.

Carter was and is nothing but a scum-bag of the lowest order. I don't think he was innocent, and those were not the only violent crimes he committed...there were several! Carter is a real dirt-bag as a human being, but as a fighter, well he wasn't much there either...he was never championship caliber like the movie portrays...hell the movie is one of the biggest loads of shit that I have ever seen. If it had been marketed as fiction, then it would have been pretty good, but being that they tried to pass it off as factual, well, it just made an absoulte horror of a man look like he was a victim, which he sure as hell was not!

Carter's 27-12-1 record is fair but not outstanding. His tenure as a contender was short, based mostly on catching Florentino Fernandez and Emile Griffith cold, stopping them both. He also had a decent chin and a very good left hook, but beyond that, he lacked speed, his boxing skill was average and he was totally confused by slick boxers like Giardello or Luis Rodriguez.
I agree that the movie was total bullshit and Carter will be remembered by the movie and a Bob Dylan song a lot more than by his skill in the ring.

I am surprised at the picks not because I think that Carter was better. To me, these 2 were strong middleweights that had pretty fair boxing skills. I don't think that Julian was way better, but both to me were pretty even in skill. Punching power??? I may go with Jackson, but I think that Hurricane had better chin. Hey, even Giardello would have outboxed Julian, don't you think?BoxBuzz wrote:Don't you think the hype around Carter has to do with sentimentality and a groundswell of media attention? Looks like Decagon and I may disagree here.....I never thought of Jackson as overly skilled fighter....so yeah a slick fighter should do well against him IMHO. But he was pretty good at pinpoint accuracy at times eg: Graham.
But you'd best not be around when his fists come knockin cuz if you aint checked out of that hotel by the time he arrives he'll vacate your premisis for you.

I just pulled this quote from a current scene topic....Taki... wrote:I don't think boxers are allowed contacts... I remember Julian Jackson used to fight almost blind because he had specs like bottle tops outside the ring.
If this is true then he was fighting with one hand tied behind his back so to speak....and Decagon may be more right than I realized.
I've read a number of articles over the years that suggested that Julian for the at least the last few years of his Boxing career was fighting with impaired vision, due (I think) to detached/torn retinas.BoxBuzz wrote:I just pulled this quote from a current scene topic....Taki... wrote:I don't think boxers are allowed contacts... I also remember seeing him wear very, very thick glssses.
If I had to pick one fighter to go the distance, it would probably be Kid Gavilan. Outstanding chin & heart, but he was also intelligent and was a master at pacing himself so he would never be caught when tired. If someone did manage to shake him up, Gavilan could escape, regroup and then figure out an alternative method of winning.

Good call Dec----Carter does not deserve to be mentioned alongside of the greats...not just because he was/is a real scum-bag, but just simply because he was not a top fighter. He got lucky in a couple of bouts and that's about all there is to it!
But for anyone who has watched the Hurricane movie and believes it to be accurate...read the following website:

If you read all that is on that site and still think Carter was innocent, then I suggest you go out and have someone put you out of your misery because you are too far gone to save!!!!
What is absolutely sick and disgusting is that this criminal has been made a millionaire for his crimes and while the families that he helped to ruin live with the loss of they're loved ones every day, Carter spends his miserable, but rich life in a daily ritual of whiskey, wine and beer. It's highly likely that it will only be a matter of time before he does the same thing again!
I know a lot of people, like myself, hate all the alphabet soup titles in boxing and here is just another tid-bit that makes the WBC even more dispicable than they already are. Right after Carter was released from prison Jose Suliman named Carter honorary world champion and gave him a free WBC world title belt! I can think of 1000s of other former fighters that deserved to get a honorary title a lot more than a criminal like Rubin Carter!
