I do not believe you really think Mcdermott would beat Richard Williams and Gary Lockett with ease if at all!.

If that is the case - what would Mcdermott do to China Chin Elcock?.

You must be having a laugh!

Tom, always rates the midlands fighters highly. It does seem at times that he only sees one man, never gives an unbiased opinion on a contest.

Lay off him lads. Most internet writers are fans and not professional journalists. They cover shows for nothing - just to get accreditation.

I reckon McDermott is likely to be short at top level but it is understandable interweb hacks are going to have their favourites who are mates or come from the some region.

If these people aren't gonna give you some sort of report who else is even if they are not the most balanced.

Keep it up Tom whether the rest or myself agree or not.

Tom is enthusiastic with regards to Midland based fighters (and why not) but I think DG is wide of the mark here - McDermott, despite a brief and limited pro resume, is very much a live contender in national terms now.

He has had little TV exposure (I cant remember any of his fights being televised) but his long armed, high volume punching attacks are just the sort to give the established upper echelons of the division nightmares.

Lay off Tom DG - I cant remember ever reading any of your reports on the web :o Its Tom's opinion and he is entitled to it.

Tom gives over a great deal of his spare time to covering the Midlands fight scene and I for one share his enthusiasm for the Black Country Body Snatcher!

On this topic of regional reporting, I think its also sometimes important in a report about an untelevised show, featuring fighters many have never seen box, to make a statement that makes people sit up and take notice. That is certainly the case with Tom’s assertion that McDermott is ready for the division’s best.

A 10 round points win over Hussein is not the kind of stuff to make people fall off their chair when reading the report over their morning coffee, but a bold statement regarding McDermott’s future capabilities is enough to get people talking.

Tom has got people discussing an ‘unfashionable’ fighter in McDermott, so to my mind he has done his job

Listen, i'm not going to come on here and claim i'm not unbiased all the time, because i am sometimes - arent we all, be it intentional or unintentional. However, i am not going to back down about McDermott - if you've ever seen him you'll know what i'm going on about!

Yes, i may favour the Midland lads (and why not? I am from the Midlands after all) but if they warrant a negative report then they will get one.

There are plenty of good fighters coming through in the Area to get excited about, why shouldnt i be enthusiastic towards them, eh? They are tomorrows star's after all.

D.G - Ever seen McDermott? He's a class act. Yes, i think he would beat Elcock too.

Ok.

Criticise me all you like, by the way, it's water off a duck's back.

Phone me on 07791919682 if you want to put some constructive criticism forward.

And another thing, It's not just me thats rates McDermott highly. Dean Powell, his manager, said he would put him in with Lockett and the so called 'big boys' tomorrow.

Everyone on here is biased to their local fighters - even more so if they are mates of them, it's human nature!! :)

That's what makes this forum a good read - especially for the middleweights. Shame there wasn't someone close to Eastman who could give us some inside knowledge on him...

Keep up the good work Tom!! :TU:

Mcdermott to beat Richard Wiliams and Gary Lockett with relative ease?.

What - is Mcdermott one of the best Middles in the world now?.

You can say those sort of thing about Winky Wright - not Mcdermott.

Tom is just upset that ELCOCK is not fighting for the British Title.

My opinion is very valid.

Not if you have never seen McDermott fight it isnt.

Personally I would give him a good shot against either. Dont know how easy the fights would be but at least this debate is getting him talked about and thats all good in my eyes. :TU:

DG - Maybe we'll get the chance to see one day but then hey Williams has to beat Eastman first, otherwise he falls off the radar..

McDermott is a very talented lad who is still learning, everytime he's been moved up a gear he has done the job.

Elcock - McDermott would be a cracker for the Midlands and it's very much 50/50. Can't wait for that one to happen.

Tom doesn't say McDermott is a World beater, he just thinks he has enough to beat both Williams and Lockett, maybe we'll get the chance to see one day, maybe not..

Yes- I have seem Mcdermott fight - he is better than your Woolcombes etc - but your statement was wayyyy off the mark, imo.

Time will tell - he is not ready from what I have seen!.

I have seen him fight and he loked good against whoever he was fighting - but beating Willkiams with relative ease?. Is this some kind of joke?.

Williams has skills- Punch - Chin.

Do you believe Mcdermott beats Williams? -

And if yes - with 'relative ease'?.

Answer that!.

Well - Richard is fighting Howard and he has a good chance in that one.

I would say at this stage Mcdermott would not get out of the blocks with Eastman.

With 'relative ease' is the phrase to look out for.

Mcdermott may well turn out to be something special - but he has yet to reach that stage.

'With relative ease'.

The word 'relative' doesnt mean it would be a walk in the park, but more of a stuggle but finding that extra gear to go above and win. It was a statement more of how good McDermott is, that an slight on either Lockett or Williams.

We will see.

When did you see McDermott fight?

As for "Upset about Elcock not getting his shot" - Sure, i was a little pissed off, as were most boxing fans around here, but his chance will come and he'll shut your mouth good and proper mate - i guarentee.

Williams was good lad three or four years ago, a real world class talent, but his time has come and gone, through no fault of his own, but he'll have to beat Eastman to prove to me he has it at middleweight.

I look forward to December 15th with great interest.

I have seen Mcdermott fight - can not remember who against but I remember thinking he looked good against who he was fighting - but still domestic level.

Also - to say relative ease is to suggest he would make it relatively easy.

He would not.

Also - you can not JUST gauge Richard Williams as a fighter based on the Howard Eastman fight. RW will win it imo - but no matter what happens Mcdermott is not ready YET!.

By your reckoning beating Eastman proves you have 'it' at Middleweight?.

Madness!. By that criteria - Elcock and Mcdermott need to do the same and Howard would chew them both up on the same night.!..

Wh has Mcdermott beaten EVER? - Elcocks best win EVER is against Farnell ( a career Lt Middle) stopped in 1 by Tak.

By all means - talk up your boys - but take the rose tinted one of for a minute.

McDermott has beat:

Andy Halder - A British title challenger, albeit a short one. Sure, Dann and Maxwell took him out in one but does that make them a better fighter? No, just means they have massive power.

McDermott outboxed, outfought and beat-up Halder in one of the most one-sided fights i've ever seen (Macca won in five) - although i was on the balcony at the Town Hall!

Michael Monaghan - A good little fighter, who, althought beaten often, had a good claim against many of those supposed losses. Many, including Boxing News, thought he deserved the nod over Lockett in their 10-rounder.

McDermott won every round with ease and retired him in nine.

Butowicz and Osman were decent fighters who give decent lads a hard-time. McDermott didnt lose a round against either man, and stopped Butowicz in three.

Maybe i cant guage Williams on his performance against Eastman, but who else has he fought at middleweight, eh?

If he'd earned his shot against someone like Lee Blundell or even Lawrence Murphy then his claim for a British title shot would have credance. But it doesnt, surely you must see that?

Hope he wins, to be honest, then he can fight Elcock or McDermott and this can be settled once and for all.

Elcock lasted 12 with Dann 0 he can punch - but not MASSIVE Power.

Elcock knocked out in 1 by Murphy.

Monaghan is respectible - but not top domestic.

You can not blame RW for being a Middle wewight for a short space of time.

He is fighting Howard Eastman and I doubt ANY broitosh Middleweight would fight him.

When he had all the belts only Dann had the bottle or was deemed worthy.

RW is better than anyone Mcdermott has ever faced - damn - RW is better than ALL of the domestic Middles AND their opponents ( with the exception of HE and RW can and will compete!).

I have to say when I read the write up, I thought exactly the same thing as D.G. It is quite a provocative statement to make at this stage.

I've made the effort and seen McDermott in the flesh more than once at Dudley Town and saw both the Halder and Monaghan bouts, and from what I've seen I do understand where Tom Podmore is coming from.

I wouldn't bet against Darren beating Williams or Lockett. His work rate is frightening and both Williams and especially lockett have problems with fast paced contests.

That said, McDermott does not appear to be very hard to hit and that cannot be considered a "benefit" when going in with punchers like Williams and Lockett.
