jamesmcdonnell wrote:Some interesting points dave, but I think your contradicting yourself in places, and also failing to understand Boxing New's dillema.

Boxing is not a mainstream sport any more, and the estab;lished fanbase is small and possibly shrinking as it is. They are also suffering in that one of the core reasons for buying the magazine, which was to get all the news every week from around the UK is being eaten away by the growth of internet sites and the increasing quality and depth of internet coverage.

Boxing News is also part of a huge company which owns dozens of magazines, and I am sure they have to toe the line drawn for them by their scottish paymasters. I am unsure who took the decision to change the format of the magazine, but I am sure it was prompted by the gradual decline in sales figures for the magazine over the last decade.

It's all well and good saying that you could bring costs down by printing it on pulp, but it's going to be very hard to attract the requisite advertising to something which looks outmoded and is covering a sport which is frankly considered a fringe interest outside of it's fanbase.

I think this makes it very difficult for them to please everyone. Their existing readership might be happy for them to produce a bald, factual, newspaper style read, with much more content and less style, but how then do they attract the younger and increasingly aesthetically demanding demographic coming through.

Look at the successful magazine formats for other sports, they all look like glossy lads mags these days, because this is what the readership expects.

I think the other problem for Boxing News is that they have a small staff who are also responsible for producing the layout as well as the editoriall, and they don't have a huge budget to pay staff for all of this more underground coverage that you think would benefit the magazine.

Internet websites prosper because they pay their writers little or nothing generally speaking, and also because they charge little or nothing for their services and they can have their content constantly updated and have an army of writers providing much of their content without even paying for offices.

I see what you are saying about the format being more suitable for a monthly, but I think the route you are suggesting for their content would see the plug pulled on the magazine altogether by their owners in 5 years or less.
Great post and right on the money. Unfortunately Dave, James is right in thinking the mag would die if your format was adopted.
I don't work for BN owners so can't drill down into the detail, but I think you'll almost certainly find that in areas like print and production they've adopted a format that:
a) Fits with other mags in their portfolio, so they can make savings on the basis of the volumes they're buying in terms of paper stock
b) Allows them to justify a higher price point and so offset any decline in copy sales through an increased margin.

I think any attempts to 'grow' the market are admirable, but the reality is that the type of hardcore fan who is going to be committed enough to the sport to buy a magazine on it is never going to stretch much beyond the 10,000 mark.
Attempts to point out the number of people watching boxing (either live or on TV) and therefore the potential readership, are slightly misleading, as this is an issue affecting all sectors. To use just two examples, despite the huge appetite for football in this country, the industry can only support one adult football magazine (Four Four Two), while others such as Total Football have fallen by the wayside. Equally, the PlayStation 2 had an install base in the UK of around two million units (that's from memory, so I stand to be corrected), yet the Official Playstation 2 mag has always hovered around 100,000 in terms of copy sales.
It's always difficult for hardcore fans to accept that there are casual fans who don't feel as passionately about the sport as they do....

Now, I haven't read/bought Boxing News for a long time. Fightnews satisfies me, its quick, FREE and with a simple format.

I do subcribe to Boxing Monthly as a compliment (I think Ian is Spot on her) to the internet. For me, Boxing Monthly has more time so it can really generate the thoughts of significant folks post fight. It also does the big preview better IMO.

However, there are some factors that I miss about Boxing Monthly that I think a new publication, or Boxing News, should definately bring more attention too - Thats the Letter page and also the results round up page. Boxrec is great for the results, but I used like the round up with Boxing Monthly - the one sentence on some of the fights would give you more of a feel than the just the result as Boxrec usually only gives - just saying "controvesial", "cuts", "come from behind KO" was all it would take.

I used to like seeing the results just to see if there was any old stagers plying their trade, you'd see some interesting old names. I wouldn't go specifically looking for them using boxrec cause I wouldn't no they had returned (no article anywhere on their return), so I would say that was the only thing I "learned" from Boxing Monthly - it was the page I would study the most.

Definately think it is missed, now I'm not sure if Boxing News have a results page... I haven't read it since the redesign, but I do think it is important.

To be honest, in my opinion, they're trying to serve a weekly audience with a monthly product. Style wise, I think they've got it all wrong.

Its about news and opinion, not whether it looks good on the coffee table. Boxing isn't urban chic, its spit, sawdust, leather and toil.

Print boxing news on newspaper pulp? Get the print costs down, get the price down and try and lure a larger audience because the hardcore fans wil buy it regardless.

Focus on the quality of reports, the fact every undercard fight is recorded meaningfully, and host more considered but opinionated pieces.

Get beneath the sport, report from offices, the changing rooms, the sanctioning bodies, help boxing fans understand the sport, its politics and driving forces by illuminating the shadows.

I dont care about whether I can put the Boxing News in binders, Idont care if the magazine doesn't look as sophisticated as GQ, I'm a boxing fan not a Art Critic.

I've got copies of Boxing News from the 60's, with 'Enry on the front and SRR etc. I preferred THAT format, print quality, to the current one.

I've a great deal of respect for CA and I think some of the other contributors report well too; I just think they've followed the obvious 'me too' route in terms of style.

I think they should have turned weakness into advantage and moved further away from the colour, gloss model and more closely reflected the roots and soul of the sport.

I think the current cover price is unacceptable for a weekly publication and I think that situation could be rectified and more readership earned or reclaimed.

Just my observations.
I was going to highlight the points that I agreed with, but I just about agree with everything you’ve written. :TU:

It is good to see that there are others/other who is thinking how I think in regard of BN…and not just people hoping to get their article published by them. 8)

If a product is good it will sell…as said in the previous post…compare this weeks BN to an edition from 15+yrs ago…it was just packed with news…Boxing News…there were some pics…but mainly just articles and reports…

Any here who have been getting BN for longer than 10-15yrs just browse through an old edition and see what you’d prefer….and be honest :o

Unfortunately cliches like that have little bearing on market reality.

Not strictly true. There are now plenty of magazines working out how to monetise their web presence without damaging the core print brand - the key is to ensure you're offering a web proposition that doesn't cannibalise e.g. fight reports appearing immediately after the event, and the weekly publication having a greater level of analysis, comprehensive post-fight interviews etc.
Boxing News is a fragile publication read by a sometimes fickle audience of hardcore boxing fans and occasional purchasers. Any move towards a web based product would almost certainly dilute their sporadic offerings.

I think that BN coul do more with the web butit would be far too easy to take their eye off the published ball and find oneself competing with already established sites. Ironically the one thing BN has got is a free advertising platform :o

I buy BN. They always come up with some extra piece of info that the websites seem to forget. It is a useful publication, though nowhere near the essential paper it used to be.

But there's too many reasons that BN would struggle to find a good readership: the Internet & the idea that we should get our boxing coverage for free; the fact that boxing disappeared from the mainstream ten years ago; the generally poor matchups & coverage on ITV; the truth that SN's star is a guy who pulls out of as many fights as he takes; the fact that you've only got one promoter whose fights are seen, which truly limits the potentuial for compelling matchups;Hatton's defection; the desire to bombard us with showcases, in which cheap imports make the home fighters look like smeg before prime time audiences...

Also, there is a distinct lack of charisma in UK boxing. We've got good sensible Khan; Ordinary Joe, etc.

Whats happening with Boxing News lately?

The shops that sell them around here like WHSmith or Asda for one time have stopped selling them lately. Only Borders around here sells it now.

Are they losing popularity or something?

There's intense competition to get mags into places like WHSmith, Asda and especially Tesco. Simply put, there are more magazines than they've got space for, so publishers compete against one another to get their magazine listed. Something like Nuts which sells 250,000 or so will be in every one of Tesco's 500+ stores, whereas BN, which does around 10,000 or so is unlikely to be big enough to get in any.
If BN is getting squeezed out of places it's probably because other magazines are growing in popularity and displacing it. For example, if there is a triathlon magazine doing 8,000 copies an issue, Smiths will keep Boxing News there, but then if the triathlon mag increases its circulation over time to 14,000 (as the sport is growing so quickly), the publishers of that magazine will lobby Smiths to let them have the space traditionally allocated to BN, as they will argue they will sell more copies and therefore generate more money for Smiths (who take a percentage of all sales).

They put mags there that are less known than BN though like Boxing Digest.

Probably is that though what you said.
