Mayweather to retire after one more fight

Post by johnswan1 »

I'm surprised by this, but I suppose he has made his money and is now the real (although disputed) welterweight champion. All he needs is the Oscar fight and there would be no surprise in him calling it a day....

Shortly after outclassing Carlos Baldomir to win the World Boxing Council welterweight championship on Saturday, Floyd Mayweather Jr. at an emotional press conference said he was retiring after one more fight.

At the press conference, Mayweather who repeatedly broke down in tears, announced: "One more fight, then that's it for me. Every time I fight, it's blood, sweat, and tears, because I love the sport. It's not just a job." Mayweather cited wear
and tear on his body, plus a desire to leave on top.

In regards to his performance against Baldomor, Mayweather told the media: "I thought could knock him out down the stretch, but I hurt my hand. He's very resilient, very strong."

Every time he fights, it's blood, sweat and tears for the other guy more like. How can he have wear and tear since he's barely touched?

But he hasn't had a real super fight yet. I think he needs one before he retires to put him up there with the likes of Leonard. Most of the big names he's fought have come off the back of a bad performance, loss or are considered shot.

DLH could be one but not really one that I'm foaming at the mouth to see due to the size difference. Mayweather was reluctant to trade with Baldomir because of his size and DLH is even bigger and much better.

Hatton or Cotto are really the only other 2 options that I could see putting him on that plateau with a Hatton fight looking unlikely but I reckon Hatton would be his Duran and Cotto his Hearns.

Floyd just wants big fights. He is now the universal lineal 147 champ

Hatton does not want ANYONE who might beat him - let alone floyd!.

Hatton can't bully at 147 which is why he moved back down, but yeah, he wants nothing of Mayweather. I'd still like to see him in with Cotto though.

Dreadful. Floyd really thinks he's done something important. He got all emotional after Gatti as well.

it doesn't surprise me one bit, however. A welterweight champion & he won't have to face any excellent welters.

Hatton should be dying to go after that bloated super featherweight. Collazo was strong inside and crafty - a genuine welter who also has a fight of the year, punch marathon win over current jr middle titlist Rivera.

Ricky is so good at closing the distance and making opponents work. Floyd would want Hatton on top of his as much as Tszyu did. Tszyu being a genuinely great champion.

I think Tszyu would have been a nightmare for Floyd. His accuracy combined with his power would have caused him all sorts of trouble.

Floyd Mayweather can forget the hall of fame if he does!

Fighters don't seem too interested in their legacy any more. I'm sure in Floyds mind he's already done enough to be considered an all time great. Can't imagine he'd be too keen on risking what he has achieved to date against any of the bigger guys in the division. He's had it very easy at Light Welter and Welter. Judah is the only credible opponent he has faced IMO, and that fact that Baldomir had just beaten him (as did Spinks), even the Judah win wasn't as big a deal as it could have been a year or so earlier.

Floyd will definitely lose respect for not fighting many of the best fighters around during his time, just like Roy Jones before him. Beating up on old and slow fighters like Gatti and Baldomir is one thing, but there's a good reason why he won't go near the likes of Margarito, Hatton, Cotto and the rest.

I think retirement talk is to get DLH in the ring. I think he wants DLH and Mosley before he retires.

At the end of the day PBFs getting judged by standards not appled to SRL/HEarns

He dominated all of the best in his first 2 divisions which have some probable hall of famers amongst them (G HErnandez, Corrales, Castillo). He beat 2 top10ers and got a belt at 140 and beat the top2 in terms of accomplisments at 147. And thats all with a body type that should not be above 135.

Also Floyd gets way to much criticism for getting turned down by fighters that are ducking/avoiding him - Hatton, Cotto, Mosley, DLH.

Fair enough he took on the true Welterweight champion, but most of these guys are as bad to deserve the criticising Calzaghe gets.

Erm NO, Calazage rarely fights top 10 opponents, Floyd rarely faces fighters outside the top10. If Calazage was a welter Baldomir would be his career defining fight.

Mitchell was no top 10 Welterweight, Judah came off a loss and retained a belt on dodgey purposes.

His best win for ages is Baldo.

No Judah is a better win than Baldomir - as you can see with Judah picking up 5 rounds compared to Baldomirs 0 rounds won. Judah and Baldomir were 1 and 2 at WW in terms of accomplishments without a doubt.

Name 10 WWs above Mitchell when PBF fought him.

Max have you been at the floor polish again?

Floyd's Last Five
Baldomir
Judah
Mitchell
Gatti
Bruseles

Calzaghe's Last Five
Bika
Lacy
Ashira
Viet
Salem

So just the one lineal champion, two title holders and one former champion for Floyd. And Calzaghe...

Bruseles? Floyd was talking to the commentators while fighting him!

Judah just lost to Baldy, so Baldy was a better win. He was downplaying the Gatti fight by saying he only got his belt because Tszyu was stripped.

He was talking to his corner while he was defending against a past it Mitchell too.

I don't dispute Salem, Veit and Ashira though.é

Any way you look at it Max of their last five Mayweaher has four who have mixed it at the very top level Calzaghe has one. In you original post you said Mayweather should be critisied as much as Calzaghe for his choice of opponents.

Maywether has fought and beat most of the top men in four divisions, Calzaghe hasn't even fought all the top men in the one division he's been in for over 10 years.

This came as a big suprise for me. If he does fight Oscar last and wins, I think years down the line he will regret not beating the other top welters (because he would) This will definetly have an impact on his legacy although with that said, he has been fighting for over 10 years now..

The retirement comment was just a silly ploy in my opinion. I don't believe it for a second :TU:

He just wants DLH to sign the contract asap.

Johnson moved to Light Heavy and was beaten by Woods now anyway.

Mundine lost to Siaca, who lost to Mitchell who Calzaghe beat in 2 rounds. :TU:

Green's gone to LHW after the Mundine fight.

I believe the Kessler fight can happen and I agree with you guys that Calzaghe or Kessler have no excuses for them to not fight each other in their next or after next fights.

Mixing with the best years previously dont mean shit when you are shot like Gatti and Mitchell. Brusseles is a never was in the first place, Judah is a one punch chicken dancer, so for Baldomir to be on the list is self explanatory, he beat a chinless wonder, and a punch drunk shadow of a man.
Mayweather is just threatening to retire, if you knew anything about him you will know he is motivated by hatred, bitterness and resentment. He will if anything do what the man that drives him crazy with jealousy did, announce his retirement, then come back every year or two for a so called mega fight only to repeat the act till he gets beaten. However what he wont be able to do which the other fella did, is KTFO his old man in his prime.
