GREAT BODY PUNCHERS
Terap I believe that's a fact, Zale was a great body-puncher.
In the third fight with Rocky Graziano, he hit Rocky with a perfect right hook to the side of the body followed by a perfect left hook to the jaw. That knocked Rocky out. From viewing the video the punch to the body shocked Rocky so that his hands went down for the Coup de Grace.
It was one of the most beautiful combos I ever witnessed.

lopman...that Zale right hand to the body was one of the most powerful I've ever seen...and I look at it a lot when I'm viewing old fights. it lands so hard and so quickly..and if you'll take a really good look it actually moves Graziano's body....I don't mean that in the sense that rocky steps away in pain...i mean it is so strong it moves his body slightly to the left...as a sandbag would.
And speaking of that fight...when graziano gets up and the referee wipes his gloves it'sa obvious that rocky has no idea where he is and the ref should have stopped it instead of letting him stand there and get blasted again. as the ref is wiping graziano's gloves, he's actually holding him up.
also ..it's not unique or even rare for that era. Knockouts were harder to come by then...which is why you don't see all those kayos in a row the way so many young fighters of today have.
more exciting then....but no question less damaging now.

Yeah you're right about that. The lower body kind of twists to the left while the upper body and head almost stays there, looks like a guy being paralyzed.Jaclem wrote:lopman...that Zale right hand to the body was one of the most powerful I've ever seen...and I look at it a lot when I'm viewing old fights. it lands so hard and so quickly..and if you'll take a really good look it actually moves Graziano's body....I don't mean that in the sense that rocky steps away in pain...i mean it is so strong it moves his body slightly to the left...as a sandbag would.

You are right about that, too. If Harry Greb was fighting today his record of world title fights(7-2) would be more like 20-3.
Willie Pep had over 200 fights but look at his title record!!! 11-3. If he was fighting nowadays he would have over 30 title fights.
As for referees stopping fights, Every fight where a fighter got an opponent going was like that.
They went a dozen knockdowns too far.

Paddy Demarco beat Saddler two out of three times. Is he better than Saddler?terap wrote:"Willie Pep had over 200 fights but look at his title record!!! 11-3. "
And the "3" stands for SANDY SADDLER.
Saddler KO'd Pep in THREE title fights out of four.
Yet some idiots who somehow have avoided knowledge of this basic and overwhelming fact still rate Pep above Saddler. Pathetic.

thnough he didn't have the power that...say Tony Zale...had in his body punches, jake lamotta banged at the body pretty good. he took punches so well that he could just charge in and throw 'punches in bunches" as the phrase goes. He'd go for the head and when the guard went up he'd do a furious attack on the body, where I think he was most effective, because of their accumlative damage as the rounds went on.
Either way, he'd throw them where your guard wasn't.
