Great show, Dunne was in a different class. I thought 117-111 was just right.
I haven't heard an atmosphere like that since watching Pacquiao fighting Larios in Philippines. Looking forward to seeing more of Dunne on RTE.

What did everyone make of Dunne's mind games?

Pickering comes out in green and to Irish music and the promoters make more than sure that there is a British flag in his corner and the national anthem is played just to make sure he doesn't win anyone over.

Then you have what I think was a Dunne double in the stands, and a heavily extended wait from Pickering in the middle of a hostile crowd.

Yes, A for effort by Ingle and co. Dunne stared out Pickering at the end of every round, but that arrogance is a good sign. No shortage of self belief there. Handled him a lot easier than Hunter that's for sure.

I was impressed by Dunne tonight. He is a very composed boxer who has a good variety of shots. I like the way he made Pickering miss and countered with head and body shots. The left hook to the body seems to be his best punch.

He is not the finished article yet but in another 4 or 5 fights at this level I think he could pose a credible threat at world level.

Got to give Pickering a lot of credit for sticking in there to the bitter end.

Oh I fcuking love it when im right... I have been on here for a while now saying how much of a poor champion Hunter was and how he was doing everything possible to avoid Dunne (and pickering for that matter) its no surprise that hes moving up in weight as he knows that SuperBantam is too hot for him right now and he also knows he has no chance of beating Dunne, run micko run LOL

I was ringside for last nights Dunne Pickering fight and the atmosphere was ELECTRIC, and yes there was no amount of respect shown to Pickering or the english anthem - I am most definately in the "Its Ok to boo" corner, if you dont like it take up supporting a sport like polo!!! Bernard paid him his respect AFTER the fight, a hostile crowd is worth at least 1 round to the home fighter and Pickering said himself before the fight that he expected it.

Dunne showed that he can step it up when required and showed great spirit & determination, he has the tools and now he has the belt and I dont think there is anyone in europe right now who can touch him. He eased up in rounds 7-9 but I think he was conserving energy for the final rounds as he has never been 12 and has seldom been 10, he knew he was well ahead so it was a good tactic in my opinion, he is very savvy and shows how well he reads the fight, he could easily have been carried away by the fans and been out on his feet in round 11.

I think the mind games played at the start was very cute, Pickering was left in the ring on his own for what seemed like an ETERNITY, I think Bernard will have mabey 3 defences and make a few quid for himself before even looking at a title shot and you cant blame him for that, I dont think Hunter will cross his path at this stage and all eyes are on Molitor and for what its worth Bernard has one up on him already by beating him in the amateurs...

Im chuffed to bits that we have another homegrown Irish Champion, they dont come round very often but when they do they are always full value for money and 7000 people can testify to that this morning

I think it's a bit disrespectful to leave a guy waiting in the ring so long, but the fight and the victory were much needed for Irish boxing.

Yes, its certainly nothing to be proud about and I find it disturbing that Pickering had coins thrown at him it seems, ...disgraceful!... the football element has certainly found its way into boxing, Mcguigans fans were always extremely passionate but fair and certainly never stooped to coin throwing... sign of the times alas!... :x

Like I said the other day - promotes pander to the football element - have been doing for a long time - thats what brings in those who dont understand boxing culture - i.e. respect for the opponant.

As for the coin throwing - no coins were thrown at Esham two coins were thrown at the guy that brought the Union Jack into the ring. Esham got given his respect during and after the fight.

So does that make it acceptable? The coins were'nt thrown at the fighter, just some guy who was holding a flag representing the fighter. He was obviously asking for it......

Can't condone the coin throwing but I think anybody waving a Union Jack around on front of 7,000 Irishmen can expect to get an adverse reaction to it.

Well I'm sure if it was the other way round there would be riots over it... boos and that are one thing but throwing stuff at anyone is totally unacceptable... the people that did that are just scum to be frank...

There is absolutely nothing wrong with booing the home town fighter's opponent (although I would never do that). This goes on in every city in the world when a home grown prospect faces the enemy. Anything over and above that is just plain wrong and most people know that. You can't demonise a whole audience for one or two idiots that take part in that shite. It is the respect after the fight has ended that matters whether the homeboy has won or lost, (especially when he has lost) that matters. There have been a few cases when that respect wasn't forthcoming that I can remember in boxing. Whoever threw the coins at Pickering's union jack waver were obviously mindless political animals who have little respect for the sport let alone Bernard Dunne. He just represents a flag and a deep seated resentment in the coin thrower.

Anyhows I have to congratulate Dunne for a good win. How far he goes in the sport will be determined by a few more fights at this level. The fact that the so called Dunne nuthuggers didn't call for a Molitor fight next, shows that they do not overestimate him at all.

Not sure if I read it on this forum or not, but didn't Dunne beat Molitor in the amateurs?

As for the coin throwing, it led to my biggest laugh of the night when it came to the biased commentating.

Jimmy Magee "Brendan Ingle we hear has been complaining about coins being thrown at Esham Pickering... Well, there is 7,000 people here and maybe only 2 or 3 coins thrown, I'm not condoning it, just saying"

I shit myself laughing at that for some reason.

You will always find a small packet mindless stupid thugs mixed in with the vast majority of fans who are just there to support their fighter and attend a quality night of boxing, which they saw last night.
Dunne looked very well last night and is improving with every fight. He has a lot of more things to bring to the table against Molitor than the limited Hunter had. I would personally like Dunne to defend his belt a few times and look to fight Molitor in Dublin late next summer.

Where did he say that??? All I heard him say was he wants to enjoy Chritmas and then defend his title a few times before fighting for the world title.

And yes he has seen the Hunter fight. He also beat Molitor as an amateur.

A copy of what was written in todays Independent ...

THE excessive facial cuts and bruises betrayed the judges' scorecards. Bernard Dunne arrives for a press conference an hour after the fight has ended "black and blue" as Dominic Ingle had promised.

The Ingles are talking up their man, Esham Pickering is talking up himself. He lost the fight but he's contenting himself that he's ahead with everything else.

Stronger fighter, cleaner face, boundless energy, he's good to go again. And he's even capped Dunne's desire to showboat.

Pickering would have you believe he'd exert himself more at a needlework class. He's been hit often but he hasn't been hurt.

"I'm not knocking him but I didn't feel it was a hard fight. I felt I was the stronger fighter. Honestly. I feel as if I could box tomorrow," he enthuses. "I have no excuses, everything went well. He's a good boxer, he's good at what he does, he'll do his work, he'll tie you up. But honestly he never bothered me."

The contrast in facial marks provided hard evidence of what he's trying to prove. A nick under the eye is all he had to show for 12 rounds in the ring with Dunne once his bloodied nose, an integral part of his boxing life, had been cleaned up.

"If you look at his face he's banged up isn't he," suggested Pickering with words that sought comfort to soothe his defeat. "He was in a fight tonight. It was closer than the judges had it."

True for him Dunne emerges from his rooms with the marks accentuated by the paleness of his skin.

Crucially however he's carrying a belt like it's the final clue in his search for the Holy Grail. In boxing, as in any sport, titles and belts are bottom line.

Dunne is now where he wants to be. With perfect timing. He took a lot but he gave more, sufficient to win impressively in the eyes of two judges and comfortably on the card of another. Pickering was a serious step up in class.

And on Saturday night Dunne stepped up himself. The banged up face gives testament to his ability to soak it up. A raucous 7,000 crowd created one of the best nights of boxing Dublin has ever experienced, an atmosphere clearly enjoyed by the visitor who wasn't deterred by the flight of coins in his direction when he stepped into the ring.

A prolonged wait for Dunne's dramatic entrance didn't upset him either. "He had a bigger build up than Naz ever had. What an entrance eh? I was waiting for half an hour for him to get into the ring but it weren't a problem. The crowd weren't hostile it was great. They got behind their man. I thoroughly enjoyed it."

Pickering's post fight declaration of well-being, however, reflects the concern of Dunne's supporters as he seeks to move to the next level - the lack of a killer punch.

It's a concern shared by Brendan Ingle. Ingle was warm in his praise for Dunne and his promoter manager Brian Peters afterwards. They have treaded the path cautiously over the last five years and now the old hand is urging more caution over the next 18 months. But he'd also like to see Dunne wave more leaden fists.

"He has got to develop his own referee and that's having a knock-out punch. I'm not saying it won't come. It's all about timing and accuracy as he gets into that calibre of opponent he's just moving into now. But he's very, very clever at what he does," observed Ingle. "He's beaten the Canadian (new IBF champion Steve Molitar) at amateur level and that kid is outstanding. But Bernard is outstanding. He can give anyone any trouble. He can bring a world title back here."

Peters' intention to "mop up Europe" wins favour from Ingle. But he can't afford to stray from Dublin with the bank of support he is building.

"Within the next 18 months he can have four defences of the European title and a world eliminator. The support is here, I've been all over the world but this was magnificent."

Influential on the judges too, he agreed. "Of course it makes a difference (to the judges). The point is while you're trying to be fair, every punch Bernard threw, whether or connected or not, the crowd went beserk. Of course it registers with the judges.

"When he got a few little flurries to the body when Esham would try to counter attack Bernard would tie him up, then the referee would split them. He was nicking the incentive inside then he was stepping off and hitting a couple of shots and walking away from him and stopping him from working. They've done a great job in developing him," praised Ingle.

As you can see from Pickerings comments the hostile atmosphere was fair game and he actually seemed to enjoy it, I think in fairness its expected that the english national anthem will be booed at any sporting event in this country, dont ask people to suddenly have morals about it coz it just wont happen and Pickering im sure accepts this and buzzed off it and I say fair play to him. As for the coin throwing its just plain wrong, I mean you could have bought a bag of chips out of that 2euro...
