Moore arrives in Colombia for interim title fight
BARRANQUILLA, Colombia, CMC – Guyana’s Leon Moore arrived Tuesday for his interim World Boxing Organisation (WBO) bantamweight title fight on Saturday night against local star Irene Pacheco.

The undefeated Moore arrived with his trainer Lennox Daniels and manager Sam Layne for the 12-round contest at the Elias Chegwin Coliseum.

“Leon went to bed (early Tuesday) after the long trip. He had training this morning and then we will have a public workout at 15.00 h today,” Layne told CMC Sport, yesterday morning.

The WBO is now processing the paper-work to sanction the bout as a WBO interim world title fight, following defeat by its bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez last month in Las Vegas.

Gonzalez, of Mexico, stepped up to the 122-pound super-bantamweight division and lost a World Boxing Council (WBC) title fight to Israel Vazquez on September 16, and the WBO is labelling Saturday night’s clash between Moore and Pacheco as an interim world title fight pending a decision on the status of Gonzalez as its WBO bantamweight king.

The Barbados-based Moore, ranked 15th by the WBO, will also focus this week on reducing his weight to make the 118-pound bantamweight division at which he has not boxed recently.

With an impressive 16-0 record including 15 knockouts, Moore came in at 127 pounds for his last bout – an efficient second-round stoppage of fellow Guyanese Errol Trotman on October 1 in a non-title contest at the Barbados Community College.

Layne, who linked up this year with Moore, is confident that the weight will not be an issue.

“Leon will make the weight,” Layne told CMC Sport.

“He has got to work hard on it. I brought down a sweat suit with me so Leon is pretty close to the weight right now. It shouldn’t be a problem making the weight and I think he will be pretty strong in this fight, come Saturday,” Layne added.

Tall for a bantamweight at 5’9”, Moore replaces Panamanian Mauricio Martinez, who -- reports say -- would not accept the purse of US$7 500 that was offered by Puerto Rican promoter Peter Rivera, organiser of this boxing card in association with Colombian promoter William Chams.

Pacheco, 35, is a former International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight (112-pound) champion, who lost his belt in December 2004 to Vic Darchinyan in Florida.

Ranked the No.2 bantamweight in the world by the WBO, Pacheco has had two wins since his loss to Darchinyan and has a ring record of 32 wins (24 knockouts) against one defeat.

Layne said the bout is of huge interest to the local media and he was forced to shield Moore from a plethora of reporters, yesterday morning.

“We saw about 10 press (reporters) this morning, television, radio and the newspapers. Leon is all over the papers today and I had to cut them off late in the morning so that Leon could get some rest,” Layne said.
