England v USA

Post by yiddo14 »

England v USA last night.
England won 5-2 with a weakened squad due to the ABA finalists not competing.
The battle of the super heavyweight prospects Tyson Fury and Michael Hunter was won by the Englishman. Both were bronze medallists at the recent junior world championships.
I think I'am right in saying this is Hunters first defeat?

Hunter has lost at least two times before. To Felix Stewart in this years Golden Gloves-final and to romanian Cristian Cioran in the jr World Championships semifinal.

Was Fury-Hunter a good fight?

I just read that all the decisions went to England and the two fights that ended in stoppages were won by USA...

I'm not too surprised that USA's only victories were by RSC. I don't think the USA is very well liked right now in the rest of the world and our boxers suffer (other athletes in other sports do too).

The USA women aren't doing very well in the World Championships with Klinefelter, Jeffery, Barry, and Kuronya all losing. Only Esparza won in the preliminaries.

Marlen Esparz & Akima Stocks are both in the semi final.

While the USA may not be liked by most the World, England is your closest allie!

Yeah, poor USA who always get robbed...
At the 1984 LA Olympics or the 1999 World Championships they didn't complain too much about the results :TU: .

How good is Tyson Fury? Didn't he lose to David Price?

Tyson Fury was beat by David Price, in the recent prem rounds of the ABA's. A bronze at the Juniors is a good achievment, but that could be Tyson's limit.

The lad is young but by all accounts was no match for David Price, who is clearly Englands best Super Heavyweight.
Now Price is a decent heavyweight, but apart from the Commonwealth games medal, which isn't a really a strong tournament among the amateur super powers, hasn't done a great deal else in Europe or outside of it.

Tyson is a super heavyweight and by all accounts a monster for his age! But English boxing is so desperate for a heavyweight star, they will get excited about anyone.

With a name like Tyson who knows :o

So after all that i dont give much hope for the US prospect Hunter either!

England and the USA both go crazy for a super heavyweight prospect.
As you say,Price by all accounts beat him quite comfortably in their bout, and he is no great shakes on the european or world scene(although clearly number 1 in the UK)
Think Fury has only had about 15 bouts though.

I'am afraid that the real quality in the super heavyweight division is in eastern europe, with one or two notable exceptions like Cammarelle(Italy)

ABA (or anyone else) - is Price intending to turn pro at all?

Pretty sure Price will try for the olympics in Beijing.
Expect him to go pro if he don't qualify for them(which is very possible)
He is receiving over 20k a year funding,so I can't see him turning over before the olympics.

[quote="yiddo14"]England and the USA both go crazy for a super heavyweight prospect.

Especially USA! They're really in desperate need of a young talented heavyweight . It was a long time ago we saw a new young american heavyweight with that "wow" surrounding him. I don't know if Hunter got what it takes to be that heavyweight, but in the context where the heavyweight division in USA are in some kind of "all time low" Hunter is really a "diamond in the rough". So for the sake of heavyweight division in USA, I hope that Hunter continues to improve and beats Mike Wilson convincingly next year. I got nothing against Wilson, but I'm rather sure that he's not That heavyweight.

I hope he does well too.The US could do with a quality big man at the moment.
Don't look too promising though if he is losing to our very own Tyson Fury, who in turn got schooled by David Price, who in turn gets schooled every time he faces anything like a world class super heavyweight!!!

Still,that's what hope is for!!

Well you might be right but remember that Fury and Hunter are just 18 year old and novices. I don't think that none of them has fought more than 20 fights yet.

The World Championships are next year, if some of the top World & European amateurs go pro after that, It might be the chance for USA & England at the Olympics.
But i think most of the top 10 boxers will wait the 12 months to add Olympic medals to there name,

Sigth. Why is there so much emphasis on THE HW division??? I don't think we're at all "desperate" for a good HW - I would just like to see us have a good team, period! At this point, I think Mike Wilson is the best SHW. I'm very impressed with Mike Hunter, however he is still learning and hasn't anywhere near the experience of a Mike Wilson. It will be interesting to see how he does in the qualifying process next year.

The heavyweights have always garnered the attention. Watch out for the beast from Michigan - Williams. He only has about 15 bouts, but can he hit. If he continues to learn, he will be a force due to his power. Think of another Mike Tyson. About the same size - 5'10", 225 to 230 with huge arms. I don't know if he will develop quickly enough for next year's qualifying process but it will be fun to watch.

As far as the lower weight classes go, that is where our biggest hopes for medals at Beijing rest. Yanez, Warren, Russell and others. HW and SHW - our boxers have a lot of work ahead of them.

I would like to see Williams vs. Carr. Jovohn Carr had a difficult bout last year against Nick Hatcher, but Mitch Williams just KO'd Hatcher in the first round. I might get to see this bout in 2 weeks at the LBC tourney. What about J.R.? Will he enter the LBC tourney? I have no idea who is going to enter our LBC tourney. Jordan could have a lot of competition or none.

NO REMATCH

Post by THE WATCHER »

Well so much for a rematch with Tyson Fury and Mike Hunter
Mr Fury showed up at the wt inns and pulled out claiming he got injured in the 1st bout my guess is he didnt do so well in the 1st bout(1 Point dec) and didnt want to risk it ''NO RISK NO REWARD'' 8)

Ah well, maybe his reasons were genuine.
I know some of his and his family recent antics have annoyed quite a few people on the amateur scene in England, lets just hope the reason he pulled out for was genuine.

Does anybody know the result of the show?
