The most brutal 1st round wins ever.

Post by KOJOE90 »

What do you think are the most brutal, conclusive or even just your favourite 1st round stoppage fights between two 'evenly' matched fighters?

To get you started here are a few I thought of.

Thomas Hearns vs James Shuler.
Bennie Briscoe vs Eugene Hart.
Nigel Benn vs Iran Barkley.
David Tua vs John Ruiz.
Azumah Nelson vs Pat Cowdell.
Naseem Hamed vs Billy Hardy.

Tua - Moorer
Lewis - Golota (at this time after Golota-Bowe II they were supposed to be evenly matched)
Brewster-Golota (actually Golota was like 3.5:1 favourite)
maybe some Tyson fights? (Tillman, Spinks)...

Cooney breaking Ron Lyles ribs with a bodyshot in the 1st was fairly brutal.

Ron was knocked out of the ring as I remember.

a round can be brutal without being a stoppage, however if this thread only dealt with stoppages i take back my posts.

Decagon wrote:Actually, Lewis was around -225 to -275. Bookies realized that Golota didn't actually win any of his bouts with Bowe. There was some heavy betting on Golota, but the smart money was on Lewis.
Probably the problem with my memory was because I was in Poland at this time  . Although I expected Lewis to win (unlike majority of the people) I though it will go to scorecards and I was very surprised to see the fight finished in no time.

Some of Bowe fights also finished very quickly:

With hindsight as an ally, it just seems that many of these fights weren't "evenly matched" to begin with...Johansson-Machen seemed evenly matched, but fights like Liston-Patterson...didn't everybody know Liston was going to win (I sure did)...and Louis-Schmeling II, Louis was upset the 1st time, did anyone think it would happen twice? (before I was born, anyone remember?) Foreman vs. Joe Roman evenly matched? No way! Tyson vs. Marvis Frazier evenly matched? Frazier was already stopped by Holmes in 1 round! Evenly matched means you can't pick a clear winner before the fight...you could pick a clear winner before some of these contests...

Leonard Morrow v. Archie Moore anyone?

That has to be at the very least one of the most unexpected 1st round KO's ever.

I realise it happend just last year but Jaidon Codrington vs Allen Green is one of the most brutally one sided first round affairs I have ever seen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-K6dvTmqZs

Also, K9 Bundrage vs Sechew Powell, if you haven't seen it there are only 3 punches landed and 5 knockdowns. Go ahead, count them. :TU:

John "The Beast" Muguibi's knockout win against Curtis Parker, Muguibi knocked Parker out of the ring. Parker was coming foreward in that fight, not the best strategy. He got hit with some really hard shots.

Hagler's knockout of Caveman Lee.

Ray Mancinni had a very brutal Knockout of Art Frias, but for most of the round the action was not all one sided like you would expect from a first round KO.

Robbie Sim's knockout against John Collins.

Bonecrusher Smith against Mike Weaver.

Joe Bugner against Richard Dunn.

Michael Dokes against Ossie Ocasio.

Torres vs Krizan...."legal sucker punch"

Krizan is KOd on the first shot of the fight while trying to touch gloves with Torres. Although perfectly legal, the punch is considered a "sucker punch" by most. PROTECT YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES!!

Norton vs Bobick

No contest, it barely qualified as a fight, it was more like a street mugging.
