Joe Calzaghe-The most frustrating active fighter?

Post by monkeybusiness »

Hear he's up to fight Manfredo next, contender loser. So what? Wasnt the Bika fight a tune up for a big fight? It seems EVERY fight (bar Lacy) is a tune up for a better one? I think he has the skills to be remembered as a really good fighter but seems too settled in his comfort zone to do it. He fights a load of no marks for years, moans about how under-appreciated he is, finally gets some recognition after Lacy, then slips back to the old routine. Shame on you.

Calzaghe is being (mis)managed into boxing oblivion. When Ottke retired and freed up the majority of the division Warren should've been looking for those belts, but I guess he's been using the 'MattyP risk-v-reward' system to match make.

I dont have anything against Calzaghe, but it really frustrates me when his father and Warren moan about him not being recognised by the media as a great fighter. MEMO- the emphasis is on your man to prove it! Not fight a load of fringe guys to gain an unvdefeated record, never have a big fight and then complain!

Ultimately, who cares about Calzaghe. He could've been big over here and in America, but now is neither. They may as well stick him on ITV4 - his last fight has probably done his rep more harm than good, and no doubt he is turning people off.

The idea of a Calzaghe book makes me want to turn into a book burner.

If I actually cared about Calzaghe, he'd be frustrating. But I decided it's just not worth worrying about.

True. I was past caring after the Salem fight. Now I am past caring after the Bika fight. almost don't want him to have another big win, because the bullshit will just carry on as normal, afterward. Shame he is fighting Jermain 'Off In A Jiffy' / 'Pre Packeged Legend' Taylor next year (Allegedly), then.

I don't see why people are blaming Warren for all this, remember, Warren took Hamed and turned him into a global star, but that's because Hamed wanted the big challenges and wanted to go to America and kick some arse.

Joe is a home boy, he has no intention of travelling and fighting away from home if he can avoid it, and he can avoid it by fighting bollocks mandatories and scrubs most of the time.

He's had some decent victories but not enough compared to what he could have achieved. Following the Lacy win he had the world at his feet, and now everyone is bored and is just walking away shaking their heads.

maybe, but Warren seems very protective, hence all those vile showcase fights to build his fighters up. That carries over to the way we look at his relations with all his fighters. When Warren was with Sky, especially in 2004, the boxing was the dregs.

Also, as to the dangerous foes that Calzaghe faces: Brewer, Mitchell, etc, most of the ones brought over are ones with zero fan base, who can be paid relative peanuts and yet still marketed as a huge fight. Warren must be pissed that JC could never fight Glen Johnson.

I would say there is bad management/promotion to go with JC's attitude. Quite why Warren insisted on a Sept 06 date to fight Beyer, when Beyer couldn't make it (needed till Oct), perplexes me. Especially when Calzaghe fights Bika in October, leaving Beyer to be eaten up by Kessler...

and also the pittance offered to Mundine, what was it, 50 grand and options on his next 3 fight, an offer he can refuse - particularly when Choc was near the top of the WBA ratings.

It'd be funny if it wasnt so bloody annoying!... I actually came round and started believing in Calzaghe after the Lacy bout and thought he was finally serious and wanted the big fights etc but this just shows how much bull all that was!... the simple fact is that Calzaghe saw through the ridiculous hype of Lacy (the next Hagler yeh! ) and saw that Jeff was just a limited fighter with a decent dig, otherwise he never would have taken the fight!... and he's just carrying on as usual now fighting nobodies and soft touches... anyone who wants to give Calzaghe a place among the 'greats' now needs their heads examined...

Warren does his best to manage his fighters to the best of his ability; ie make them as much money as possible. Unfortunately, that often means micromanaging their career and an often cynical choice of opponent.

However, Calzaghe must take some of the blame here. It's not like Warren can stop him doing anything he really wants to do. Look at Ricky Hatton. Much as it looks like his career is going downhill, he DEMANDED the fight with Tszyu. When was the last time you heard Calzaghe being quite so forceful.

He backed out of two fights with Johnson -- albeit during a testing time for him personally -- and has never seemed too interested in going to the States, which, like it of loath it, is the place you need to go for the mega bucks and mega fights.

If he really wanted the big fights, he could have them tomorrow.

I agree with the general consensus, but I do have to ask what his other options are at the moment. Isn't Kessler still injured? And doesn't he have to fight Andrade before a Calzaghe fight could be made anyway? It doesn't really seem like there's anyone else available for him to fight at the moment, so once again he's marking time. If he fights Taylor or Kessler next then no one can really complain, but the sad thing is that he's run out of chances with most people by now when he should be one of our most loved fighters.

The most annoying aspect of Calzaghe is Warren announcing (after every fight) that he's lining up 'mega' and 'super' fights... Bika and Manfredo... ergh.

As far as I'm concerned, if he doesn't fight either Taylor or Kessler after Manfredo then he is a joke and it won't be possible for anyone to defend him anymore. This fight is definitely pushing the limits of people's patience - that is, the few people who haven't given up on him already.

I have had it with Calzaghe now.

He fights average cometition and constantly winges that he does not get the credit he deserves. He finally has a big fight millions stay up till 2am to watch it he is given all the credit in the world when he wins. ITV show special programmes about his win for weeks afterwards, there are documentaries made about him exactly what he's been asking for for years. Then we get rubbish like this when there are bigger fights to be made. No doubt he'll be back complaining about not getting credit again soon.
