Michael Jones has beaten Jamie Moore to a shot at the European light-middleweight title when he takes on champion Michele Piccirillo in Milan, Ted Bami will also defend his European title on the same show

Tough ask in Italy for both fighters. I would favour both (slightly) at home but I think both Branco and Piccirllo would start as favourites in Italy.

Incidently, since when is Nigeria part of the EU.... Does this mean Henry is "back" British again?

How good is the Italian though?

Was the Spinks win a gift decision?

He got beaten by Mayorga though.

Really? When he was fighting in the US I am sure he renounced his Britishness in a rather derogatory fashion.

Hope Jones can make the weight ok, he's been up to middleweight in his last one.
Piccirillo is a good boxer, deserved the decision over Spinks IMO, he's a good boxer, but not the strongest. Michael would have to get control of the ring and bully Piccirillo, not something he's used to doing.
One thing in Jones favour is Piccirillo is 36 and his legs might run out in a longer fight.

Does anyone know if Froch is ranked high with the IBF?, after Calzaghe has dropped that title maybe Carl could face Robert Stieglitz for vacant title.

The EBU does anyway. Interesting fight. Perhaps not to watch, but for the outcome. Funny thing is it will probably be in Germany (if it happens. Akinwande could always decline.)

Can't see either Bami or Jones bringing back a title from Italy I'm afraid

Real hard luck on Jamie Moore not getting a shot first, but that's boxing through and through.

Both Jones and Bami will have to win by knockout. Not just because it's in Italy, but because those two are amongst the very best Italy have to offer at those weights.

I thought spinks deserved the nod. Quick assesment from BBC read

Cory Spinks, son of former world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks, may feel aggrieved after losing a points decision in Italy.
European champion Michele Piccirillo defeated Spinks on Saturday night by unanimous decision to win the vacant IBF world welterweight title.

The 32-year-old Piccirillo improved to 37-1 (with 23 knockouts) after the 12 round battle in the small town of Campione D'Italia.

Spinks, 24, dropped to 29-2 (with 10 knockouts) despite seeming to be in control of the fight from the start.

The three judges, two Americans and one Italian, scored the fight 115-112, 116-111 and 115-112 in favour of the veteran Italian.

Piccirillo, who weighed in at 66.5 kilograms (146.5 pounds) raised his arms with a sense of astonishment after learning of the decision, joined in the ring by promoter Don King.

Spinks landed many more punches than the Italian, and Piccirillo was warned several times for using his head illegally.

Cuts above the eye and below the nose of Spinks were evidence that the victor did land several shots.

Spinks, who weighed in at 66 kilograms (145.5 pounds), comes from a famous boxing family.

His father, and uncle, Michael Spinks, are the only brothers to have each won gold medals in boxing at the same Olympics.

Cory Spinks' brother Darrell is also a boxer.

The fight was held in front of 400 invited guests at the Casino di Campione.

I've seen Spinks vs Piccarillo 1 and Spinks deserved the decision big style. Practically as decisive a "win" as Damean Kelly vs Maladrottu 1. Not sure what is the worst decision in recent times.

Spinks vs Piccarillo 2 was a tad closer, IMO.

Spinks vs Piccarillo 2 was a tad closer, IMO.

Shows how opinions can differ on fights, I scored it a win for Piccarillo in the 1st fight. thats the only time i've watched it. May stick it back on in the week to see if i was blind that night.

Piccirillo is a classy enough boxer, he had the upper hand on Mayorga when he boxed from distance it was only when Mayorga landed that the Italian froze solid and kept going down. I would think he has the beating of Jones though, although on points rather than stoppage.

This whole situation of Jones getting a Euro shot before Moore stinks. Same when Scott Pemberton twice beat Omar Sheika and guess who got the world title nod when Markus Beyer was defending his crown? Yep Sheika.

Dzindiruk became WBO champion, so was stripped. Piccirllo beat Konecny for the title. Defended it vs Mesi (which was shown on Eurosport).
