Cotto v Quintana - upset this weekend?

Post by MightyWarrior »

Looks a tough one for Cotto's debut at 147 this weekend. Quintana seems to be very underated - took puncher Joel Julio to school last time out, getting off the canvas to do so.

He also KO'd Cassiani in the three rounds, the dangerous Columbian who wacked out Collazo, shown on that Sports Network video, posted to undermine the Hatton fight.

Says alot about Cotto that he'd take such a hard fight straight in at 147 - I bet Billy Graham would've turned down Quintana flat, no doubt.

Good chance Cotto loses this fight i reckon.

Plus Cotto had allot of problems last time with Magillagi or whatever hes called. He got outlanded and had problems with the movement

Yes very tough debut at 147, I hope he doesn't loose because he's the kind of fighter I enjoy watching. Do you think he might be stronger and more durable without the effort of killing himself to make 140, I know it didn't help Hatton but Miguel hs a much bigger frame.

Is the fight being shwn on the net?

Quintana's nowhere near as sharp as Malignaggi. So I don't think that the movement will be a problem for Cotto. He may well be outlanded though, 'cos his workrate is proving to be a major weakness.

If he isn't more durable at welter than he seemed to be a division below, he might not only be beaten at the weekend, but he may also be stopped. Dangerous, dangerous fight for a debut in a new weight class.

Also, I like 'Winky' but I wish we'd have been given this card instead.

I have been expecting Cotto to get turned over for a few fights now, esp with his weight struggles at 140.

Now he is at welter but is matched tough here - I would love to see the fight.

Cotto seems a bit static to me and a big storng boxer, maybe like Collazo actually, could well beat him IMO.

Well Quintana has better reach/range, size, power. Malignaggi was definition of powder puffed punches so Cotto could walk through them but I still had him Malignaggi winning about 4-5 rounds or so.

I think Cottos looking impressive physically from the pre-fight pictures and could be an awful lot better himself than recent outings. We'll have to wait and see

Cotto can move when he needs to, he did against N'dou, because he had an injured rib, I think he just prefers to get stuck in and break his opponent down.

Thing is though, will his punches have the desired effect against someone he won't outweigh for a change? How will he take a Welterweight's punches.

Wouldn't consider this a big upset if he lost.

This is the absolute key. Not only in terms of this weekend, but in terms of Cotto's whole future. He's been shaken several times, and looked close to the brink against both Corley and Torres, I'm sure I even saw a little wobble during his fight with Malignaggi. How much of this is down to weight making is going to shape the rest of Cotto's career, because if is whiskers are in any way suspect then it's going to be hard for him at welter.

Really looking forward to this fight. Although Luis Collazo is an underated fighter and was a world champion I see this as a much more dangerous ask for Cotto, than what Hatton's Welterweight debut.

However, I do think the subsequent performances of Joel Julio (close decision win over Rivera) have taken the sheen off this fight a little. Is Quintanta a genuine star of the future (it looked that way when he beat Julio) or did he just struggle to beat an over hyped and overated puncher, whose not world class?

Agree. I think we can say now with hindsight that Julio is not world class yet but he still has age on his side.

I'm going for Cotto to win by decision. I'm expecting him to be stronger and less susceptible at 147 with maybe Quintana having to climb off the canvas late in the fight.

Should be a good night with Margarito/Clottey on the same card.

I've been thinking thew same thing - no-one even mentioned Quintana before the Julio fight (and they're lying if they say they did) and now suddenly everyone's acting like he's a killer.

A couple of fights ago he was facing Dillon Carew who Hatton fought back in 1999 in his 13th fight.

Julio hurt him to the body so i can see the heavy handed Cotto having the same success.

Cotto stoppage for me.

Cottos move up has been far better planned than hattons, I'd be interested to know fight night weigh in's for Hatton Collazo. Collazo had operated at LMW and Hatton has always been a 140lber who had his hand forced to move up about 6 or 7 weeks before fight night.

Anyhow, to the matter in hand - Cotto UD although if the odds are long Quintana could be worth a tenner.

Hatton outweighed Collazo on fight night, and I've heard Ricky quoted as saying that he routinely weighed 154 on fight night when fighting at 140.

Hatton looked much more ripped and muscular for the Collazo fight, but it didn't really do him much good on the night. Hatton has seen sense and moved back down, Cotto seems unable to make the weight any more without draining himself, but maybe he just need a better team to help him make weight.

Hatton weighs in at 155+ these days at 140 - thats supposedly his ideal weight although I think he was quite a bit lighter against Tyszu

Maybe it was the style of Collazo and not the weight/size. If hattons heavier on fight night you could assume he'll encounter someone Callzos size at 140.

Well Ricky said himself that Collazo's shots felt a lot heavier than what he was used to.

Hatton normally outweighs his opponents significantly, you can see the size difference in the ring when they are at ring centre. He even looked bigger than Tszyu.

I like Cotto but unfortunately I think he is going to be upset this weekend. No odds available yet as far as I can see but I'd expect Quintana to be around 2/1. A good bet if he turns out to be that price.

This is an interesting fight, Carlos Quintana came out of the wilderness to expose Joel Julio as a bit of a one dimensional puncher with no plan B. Quintana displayed very good basics and a slippery style to make a mug of the touted Julio. The fight certainly provided more entertainment than the dire main event that evening (Calvin Brock V Timur Ibragimov).

Good to see Cotto has finally moved up in weight after some desperate struggles at Light Welterweight coming in looking like a skeleton. Cotto did have some problems with the style of Paulie Malignaggi, if only Malignaggi had a punch that fight would have been very interesting indeed.

Still Cotto has problems with opponents but always finds a way to prevail, i back him on points but he won't have it easy against a very skilled and nifty operator in Quintana. Should be a good one.

Cotto would be a strong favourite if he wasn't moving up a weight, but he is so I'd make it a 50/50 fight.

I would actually make Quintana a slight favourite in this one, but if Cotto adjusts well enough to the weight he has it in him to turn around a tough fight. I just think Quintana will be too slick and strong for him - and I'm more of a Cotto fan than most.

quintana hasnt fought the same level of competition cotto has, nothing like it.the only issue is the change in weight, and cotto should be much more comfortable at this weight. another issue could be the chin thing, but cotto hasnt been stopped yet.i dont see an upset on the cards.cotto to win on points or a late stoppage

It's worth remembering that Cotto gets hit a lot (or at least too much for my liking) and Quintana is a decent boxer. Add that to the unknown effect that moving up 7lbs may have on Cotto's punching power, and the variables start to stack up in favour of a very, very close fight... just look at Hatton vs Collazo.

Plus Quintana has KO'd 18 opponents so he must have a decent dig on him as well.
