Lightning Fast Knockout Punchers

Post by Lopman »

Which world champions had lightning fast hands but could knock people out with any one of them? Please only list world champions, and when I say world champion I mean not some meaningless three-letter title, I mean an established reign.

I'll name my own favourites.

Floyd Patterson

I have the Patterson-v-Johannson trilogy on tape(it's my favourite trilogy). I've noticed Patterson's fantastic speed. Faster paws than both Louis and Ali definitely. But the difference between him and other fast punchers like Sugar Ray Leonard is that each one of his punches had huge power in them. In one of his fights with Ingemar he landed a left hook only on the forehead, then two right hooks, one grazing one to the jaw and one to the temple. Johannson failed the ten-count. But those punches were made in his usual dazzling speed. In fact, and I bet 99% of you guys will disagree, I think he was a better puncher than Louis.

Sugar Ray Robinson

Carmen Basilio and Paul Pender, past opponents both agreed he was the greatest hitter. Robinson was astonishing because he hit with amazing speed but still, every punch was a nightmare. It only took one left hook to KO a guy and he could launch several left-hooks in rapid succession. He was a better puncher than fellow welterweight-turned-middleweight Thomas Hearns, who is widely regarded.

He usually did vicious flurries of half-hook, half-uppercuts to the body, and these were devastating. He usually prefered to lead a combo with a power-punch rather than a jab. Often in fights he would launch fast lead straight-rights to the body.

Post any others you think are like this.

Mike Tyson during his first tenure was a lighting fast knockout puncher.

Tyson was definately harder with one punch than Patterson, but I strongly disagree he was near Patterson in terms of speed.

If you compare the video footage of both of them you'll see that Tyson is simply not up to his level in this, no matter which fight he's in.

I agree that in terms of telegraphing Tyson's punches were very fast(and devastating), but in terms of one-after-the-other succession of punches he was nowhere near Patterson. If someone says he is 'lightning fast' in this respect they must be kidding, the simple fights on video prove this.

But I totally agree with you that his punches were lightning fast in terms of how fast it came out of him.

Hey that's just how I feel and how the footage shows it though.

a prediction...tomato can will come along soon and agree with my contention that joe louis had the greatest combination of hand speed and power. You don't see those flurries Patterson threw (and they were both fast and hard) because when Louis hit them they weren't vertical long enough to take any more. i THINK it was Max Baer who said "he hit me 13 times as I was falling down."

Totally agree about the Sugar Man.

Bob Foster's left hook was so fast, so accurate and so powerful that often the first time we saw it was on the replay of the knockout.

good thread...it's got me thinking now about others.

Are you talking about Thomas Hearns's fantastic KO of Roberto Duran?

Well it's more about whether you get a fighter cleanly on the chin or not. And Hearns's punching was not nearly as fast as The Sweetest's.

Sugar Ray punched much better than Hearns. Both could KO with one punch but Hearns did not punch nearly as fast as Ray's.

By the way I'm not disrespcting Hearns at all, he's one of my favourite boxers ever and my favourite from the 80s.
