Mayweather has been in court numerous times for assualting women, how many times has Ali been in court for doing something like that??.... you're talking crap like usual.... whatever you're taking its affecting your brain mate...Decagon wrote:Ali was an asshole. There's no secret about that. Is Floyd Mayweather an asshole, too? Sure.

Although I’ll admit there may be truth to that assessment, it’s also likely that the insults he used with his black opponents received more publicity because they were, in general, more important fights. I attended several local events here in NE Ohio where Ali appeared prior to his fight with Wepner, and he was not too kind in his remarks about the bleeder. Of course, outside of NE Ohio those remarks most likely didn’t get the much media coverage outside of Ohio. OTOH, the media attention prior to Manila was much greater, therefore his Gorilla remarks have become a much more remembered part of history.livingstone cole wrote:A champion of black rights, yet he was respectfull to all his white opponents and saved his most vicious tongue for his black rivals.

I read it when it was originally posted.livingstone cole wrote:Maybe, but in Liston on the other hand was portrayed as a big black boogeyman, someone who'd probably eat your babies. The white crowds had given him this image. Would Ali have not been better offering some sort of solidarity to Liston because he was a victim of negative racial framing more than anyone else I can think of? Well we all know what Ali did instead.
Have you read the link that I posted?
During his career, Ali was arguably the most well known person in the world. How do you think he accomplished that? Boxing, like any sport, is entertainment, and Ali knew that better than just about anyone. I can make no presumption of his character, and most likely neither can any other poster on this forum unless they know him personally. I simply pointed out that he was also quite brutal to Wepner as well, who was white. His theatrics were probably no more than media hype for his fights, and also psychological ploys to get under the skin of his opponents. There may have been more meaning to his insults, but I don’t know for sure, and I expect that you don’t either.
To say Ali was some demon is just stupidity and imo racism, we dont see people talking about Marcinaos foibles or what Dempsey got up to in his personal life, (and there was plenty!) or even Louis, ...but then louis 'played the game' didnt he, whereas Ali, like Johnson before him wouldnt. I'm not saying Ali is or was a saint, after all he's got faults like anyone else, but to say things like Ali is mean is just pathetic... after all these are boxers we're talking about, every boxer has to have a streak of meaness and egotism in them or they would never pursue a sport where the object is to hurt the other person... but Ali on the whole comes across as a very decent and brave man and those who try to sully his name even now should grow up and get a life....
The truth is that the anti Ali brigade cant realistically knock Ali as a fighter so they try and denigrate him as a person instead...

How are the lines blurred... Ali's life is probably the most documented of any person in the last century, he had his faults yes, but his good points far outweighed the bad... despite his religion he was never a real 'racist' some of his closest freinds have been white, he had a white triner for Christsakes, and as for him being a woman beater thats just so stupid its not worth commenting on...livingstone cole wrote:I don't think I was ever criticising Ali as a person, for I'm not one to judge private matters. I was merely trying to estabalish the real Ali from the legend Ali as the lines become more blurred with each successive year
