Well, since the fighter most Duran fans detest the most is Sugar Ray Leonard, I'll do my best to make an unbiased comparison of there respective skills.
HANDSPEED. Leonard
JAB. Leonard
DEFENSE. On the inside Duran. On the outside where footwork becomes a bigger factor. Leonard
POWER. At there best weights i,e LW and WW. Duran. Going up in weight Leonard
BODY PUNCHING. Duran
CHIN. Leonard
STAMINA. Even
HEART. Leonard
AS A TACTICIAN. This is the hardest one of all to pick so I'll just call it Even.
Does anyone...
re
>>>Duran was smaller than Robinson, Hearns was smaller than Graziano (it's like me saying Chris Byrd hit harder than Edwin Rosario).<<<
Well then you simply should not make comments that no one Robinson fought is even in the same stratosphere as Hearns when it comes to punching...because it's simply an outrageous and incorrect statement!!!
And for the record...Hearns was bigger than Graziano...quite bigger actually!!!

Erm... We are talking in a pound-for-pound sense. It's like I would also say, as a puncher, John Ruiz wasn't even in the same stratosphere as Ruben Olivares.barry wrote:>>>Duran was smaller than Robinson, Hearns was smaller than Graziano (it's like me saying Chris Byrd hit harder than Edwin Rosario).<<<

I would appreciate it if you could lose the annoying exclamation marks.
How can you give 'chin' to Leonard? What possible event could make you choose Leonard's chin over Duran's? Don't say Tommy Hearns, because Leonard didn't take a shot anywhere near like Hearns' final one on Duran... Plus Duran was naturally smaller. I can't imagine a late thirties Leonard taking big punches from Dwight Qawi (for instance) like Duran did against Barkley.Seamus wrote:Well, since the fighter most Duran fans detest the most is Sugar Ray Leonard, I'll do my best to make an unbiased comparison of there respective skills.

Power I would definitely give to Duran. Again, I can't see why you are picking Leonard.
How about this?
Experience: Duran
All-around ability: Duran
Counter punching: Duran
Combination punching: Duran
I certainly will use there fights with Hearns as part of my argument. The fact that Hearns couldn't do to Leonard in 26 rounds what he easily did to two very solid chinned fighters in Duran and Cuevas inside of 4 rounds says alot, plus DeJesus' pair of knockdowns of Duran enter the equasion as well. Leonard didn't get dropped until after his first come back.
I DID rate Duran as the better puncher at there best weights.

Duran at 5ft 7in, and a bit underprepared, not to mention naturally smaller (than Hearns & Leonard), fighting twenty pounds out of his best weight class, was a much more vulnerable target than a taller, peak Leonard fighting Tommy Hearns at a nice, even weight. There was a big difference.Seamus wrote:I certainly will use there fights with Hearns as part of my argument. Duran's display of endurance against Barkley should eclipse any resilency demonstrations Leonard displayed.
I know you rated Duran a superior hitter to Leonard at their best weights, but even going up in weight, I can't see why you are choosing Leonard?

There are other interesting facts, just take a look at Duran's age, and record. He had been in so many wars against top opposition, yet he still managed to be competitive against one of the best middleweights of all time. Hearns did indeed destroy Duran, but it's fairly safe to say, Duran was no longer at his best in that fight. Somebody in these forums mentioned that they believed Duran could have Pep-like defense. I don't doubt that, I feel that he just had more bravado than just about any fighter and he must have enjoyed mixing it up because it seemed to come naturally to him.DoubleM wrote:Duran at 5ft 7in, and a bit underprepared, not to mention naturally smaller (than Hearns & Leonard), fighting twenty pounds out of his best weight class, was a much more vulnerable target than a taller, peak Leonard fighting Tommy Hearns at a nice, even weight.
