Can you please correct this era on you records...
Hello,
You have on your records that Larry Holmes beat Gerry Cooney by a TKO, to be accurate to the fullest, which I'm sure this site aims to be...
Cooney lost the fight by disqualification in the 13th round. When his trainer Victor Vallie stepped into the ring in the 13th round, under the Nevada state athletic commission rules disqualification was automatic.
Gerry Cooney was disqualified in the 13th round, not TKO'd.
I also have Howard Cosell stating that it was mistakenly reported as a TKO on video tape.

I have not recently, but I am positive as I still have the video tape and watched it again this week.
The quote was from Howard Cosell
one more point to be made when Victor Vallie stepped into the ring that under the Nevada state athletic commission rules disqualification was automatic, it was not as mistakenly reported by some media people, a technical knockout
Even when they announced Homes the winner in the ring they sad winner and still heavyweight champion, Larry Holmes.
Not winner by TKO...
You will read all over the place including Holmes site that it was a TKO, but officially, it was not. The ref did not and was not going to stop the fight, Mills Lane even said, his eyes were clear I was going to give him another shot.... Cooney's trainer walked into the ring, and that when disqualification was automatic.
You will see a more accurate write up here on the fight, as you will see the ref did not stop the fight, and I remember not seeing Holmes' KO # tally up another notch when they showed his record after the fight.

I am 100% positive on this.

re
Howard Cosell was mostly full of crap and I would take anything he said with about as much certainty as I would from any other broadcaster. The best bet...actually, the only bet is to check with the Nevada commission on what the result was. Regardless of what rules may state...whatever the referee declared is the result, unless the result is changed by a commission.

I also remember Cooney's manager saying Cooney was disqualified.
Howard Cosell was not full of it, he was reporting a fact, this is why on the tape I have it does not say winner by TKO, it says "W" Larry Holmes.
I'm just being official, I will write the NEV, SAC just to prove my point.
It got accepted to the mainstream that it was a TKO because the fight was stopped by the trainer, but according to the rules the way he did it created a automatic disqualification.
I lived ate, S%&t, and slept every aspect of that fight.

Also I would like to add, that I know Mr. Cosell at times had a reputation that you either loved him or hated him, but do you really think that a man with his intelligence and being a New York City lawyer, would attribute or make up false rules of the Nevada state athletic commission on ABC with the entire country watching?
But all the major record books of the day such as Pugilato and Ring Record books had it as a TKO.
Only the 1983 British Boxing News annual had it correctly as a disqualification. I remember
pointing this out (Along with others.) at the time to no avail.
Even the ABC’s “official registry” FightFax has it as a TKO in their 2001 RB on page 412.
If U can get the Nevada state athletic commission to fax BoxRec an addendum stating it is a
disqualification, I’ll be happy to change it.

I doubt very much the NEW SAC will say TKO... the way I addressed Cosell's quote to them
I"m surprised that you found this
"Only the 1983 British Boxing News annual had it correctly as a disqualification."
And yes correctly, just because all the other publications mistakenly reported it as Cosell said a TKO does, should not mean this great site should join the incorrect majority. Yes the majority can be wrong...
re ...Galileo
If you feel the British Boxing News was correct you should change it.
Reason I say this is the Nev SAC may get a lot of business related E mail to waste their time on getting back to me, I hope they do.
Thanks.

Sorry, but the show is locked and can’t be changed until we get an “official”sole_survivor wrote:I doubt very much the NEW SAC will say TKO... the way I addressed Cosell's quote to them

addendum from the commission. We have an agreement with the ABC not to use hearsay.
( :( Even thought it may be technically correct.
I brought the 1983 British Boxing News annual info up to Ring RB and Ralph Citro who was
the editor of Computer Boxing Update (Forerunner of Fight Fax) at the time.
Their answer was the same as I mentioned above.
Good luck on your query, but don’t hold your breath.
