Khan-Augustus

Post by Phenomenal-Nutrition »

When do you think Amir would be ready for everyones favourate journeyman? I know it will happen no time soon but maybe in a years time. This would be a good fight and great learning experience with the bag of tricks Augustus has. In many ways Augustus is world class and experience against such a fighter would be great. It would be 2sided but Amirs workrate and speed should be enough to pull out a decision. I actually doubt SN would put Khan in with such a dangerous journeyman sadly.

On another note wouldn't anyone else like to see Augustus get a world title shot? Witter-Augustus would most likely be a bad clash of styles.

Khan's not ready for someone as skilled as Augustus, he'd old man Khan badly and I think might even give him a pretty bad whooping. He's very quick is Augustus, and lovely shot selection.

I totally agree. Augustus is far too experienced for Khan, and at this stage of their respective careers, far too good. In fact I'd go so far as to say that he's the best journeymen out there, maybe I wouldn't even use that term. Khan's nowhere near ready for domestic titles yet, let alone a solid top twenty operator. It'll be a good few years before an opponent like this will even be considered.

Augusta stood Thaxton on his head years ago and Jono would have too much for the Golden Boy at this stage.

Augusta might have a journeyman's record but he has the skills of a world champ.

Khan wont be ready for that kind of challenge for a long, lomng time based on recent showings.

Right now, Augustus would clown Khan...the latters is too sloppy and doesn't have the guile to react to a crafty fcuker like augustus...

Completely agree with TerribleTerry there. I was really impressed with Augustus last week.... thought he wasn't given the respect he deserves by the likes of Nelson. Who said when he steps up he loses, quite often it is at short notice or he is controvesial. Never been outclass when he steps up.

Here's a prediction. If Augustus fought Witter, I would back Emmanuel. Think Hatton vs Augustus now is still a really intriguing fight. Would MUCH prefer that than Urango.

So is Augustus a good boxer who's overachieved in his wins?, or a good boxer who hasn't done his skills justice in his losses?

its always hard to tell, Augustus holds good wins over boxers such as Courtney Burton, Trujillo, Finger, Thaxton etc. But equally he has lost to alot of boxers at fringe and world class.

One thing is he's always entertaining, and certainly talks a good fight.

It is hard to tell, especially as half his defeats happened before the Thaxton fight.

I would be inclined to think the latter, he has that Journeyman mentality. Always seems to do enough to warrant a quick re-booking but most of the time not enough to secure the win (or sometimes isn't helped by the judges). His performances vs Micky Ward and Courtney Burton 1 were practically polar opposites, but equally impressive.

Looking at his record though he has lost some decisions quite comprehensively..... i.e. Kelson Pinto. Having seen Pinto, its hard to imaging him beating Augustus. He has beaten fighters better than Pinto.

Yeah he's ceratinly a puzzler, with his fast hands and good chin you'd think he'd of had a real chance against Pinto, but maybe he's just happy to get the payday, and the ambition isn't there.

Pinto used the weis fight as his blueprint..pop the jab, mix it with a few rights, keep moving, nothing particularly special...augustus isn't that great, I think Khan, in a few fights, could do the same...

Augustus on a good night would probably beat Khan at this point, but having said that Augustus does switch between awesome and awful on fight to fight basis.

If this match took place next (i.e Feb 2007), Augustus would piss all over Khan.

Interesting thought, but not going to happen.

Ok another thought, Augustus wanted the Hatton job for a few years pre-Tyszu, anyone think Augustus on his best night may have upset Ricky back then?

Not a snowballs chance in hell, but it would have been a very entertaining fight.

I wouldnt be too surprised to see Khan fight Augustus for a vacant world title in about 2 years time, but having said that he would probably be seen as too risky even then.... the attraction though would be that Augustus cant really punch and isnt getting any younger... if they fought now though Augustus would school Khan and to be honest theres no gurentee that Amir will improve that much in 12 or 18 months as he hasnt shown that much improvement in the last year... in fact I think he's been going back!...

no.

but he would have given him a tougher nights work than virtually everyone that hatton has ever boxed.

he was always an opponent i didn't want hatton to box on the way thru. :TU:

Thanks!

I am very impressive! Augusta remind me Naseem Hamed. Khan is not ready to fight him in 2007.

If I remember rightly, he also wanted the job post-Tszyu as well. But either way, no, I don't think he could beat Hatton. Hugely entertaining fighter, but there's a reason why he doesn't have a breakout win.

That said, I wouldn't have minded seeing him as a WBU opponent for Hatton. That's about his level at the end of the day.

Augustus is slow, has very little power at world level and doesn't really have any snap or leverage in his shots.

Basically a very limited but awkward spoiler and a kind of poor version of Sanderline Williams\Kirkland Laing.

IF Khan is a real prospect on the level of past British greats like Buchanan, Conteh and Lewis then he should be slaughtering someone of Augustus skillset within the next year or two.

Right now, Augustus may be too awkward for him.

Love watching those clips of Ward v Augustus again, either one would have been a great opponent for Hatton during his WBU reign and provided a fantastic fight. Shame people put up these great clips on youtube with the worst crap as a soundtrack, just leave the commentary.
