"Big" George Foreman's legacy.

Post by Crease »

I would rate Foreman as one of the top 5 greatest Heavyweights of All Time!

BUT what will his legacy be?

Will he just be remember as the big brute who Ali outfoxed in "The Rumble In The Jungle"? (Because I think people forget that he DESTROYED Frazier on 2 occasions)...

Will he be remembered as a comeback kid? (Where he wins the world title as a baldy old man)...

I believe Foreman is always the boxer overlooked in peoples top 10... Not many fighters out there could match Big George in my opiniion...

But who will he be remembered?

Actually I don't know anyone who wouldn't have Foreman in the top 10.

I have him as #5; incidentally this has also been the oucome of your elimination game.

His legacy includes the devastating early KO wins of the young George Foreman over top fighters like Frazier, Norton or Chuvalo; the entertaining slugfest with Ron Lyle; his poor performances against defensively strong fighters like Ali or Young; and the amazing comeback in the 1990s. Enough not to make people forget Big George.

YOU would have him in your top 10? Nice one, :TU: I see we agree on something Pundit...

But I'm sure our top 5s would be very different...
Mines are; Marciano, Louis, Ali, Foreman, Dempsey.

But I'm glad to hear that you too believe that Foreman will be remembered (not just as the fallen giant as Liston is)...

I mean most pics I see of Liston are of Ali standing over him bellowing down at him...

For sure....

My top 5 are Ali, Louis, Holmes, Johnson, Foreman. I have Liston at #6.

Good list, I have Liston at 5 instead of Foreman, who I have at 7, Lewis at 6, Frazier at 8. I think Foreman is an all-time great, proving it with his destruction of the fellow great Joe Frazier. This was probably the greatest demolition job in heavyweight title history considering the level of Frazier.

I have Foreman and Liston at five and six too, but have swapped them a few times when making lists. I feel Liston was the better fighter but Foreman achieved more.

back in the 1980s I didn't even have George in my top 10. He had a short career and his weaknesses seemed all too obvious.

When he made a comeback i was thankful that he was carefully matched because I was terrified someone would kill him. He paced himself well and showed courage, heart and chin. If he could have paced himself like that in his first career...

When he won the title back I was living in Japan. I watched the fight on TV and was leaping up and down when he landed the KO punch. I couldn't believe it.

Now I think George is a top 10 fighter and if we could merge the 2 fighters he would be a real threat.

I find #3-#6 altogether hard to rank, but I'm pretty clear that Holmes, Johnson, Foreman and Liston form the "2a"-group after the "1" group Ali and Louis. Next come the Dempseys, Lewis', Marcianos, Fraziers, Tunneys.
