Ashanti, I'll ask the ame question I asked Clarence. Out of the other American super heavies, who is your toughest opponent? Who is the most overrated? Not counting yourself, who will be the best pro?
I think Mike Wilson is overrated. I beat him this year in the Tacoma Golden Gloves also beat Jonte Willis in the finals. I think Jonte is tougher than Mike. I never fought M. Hunter but I think his one of the best around right now so I will say he will be the toughest opponent.
Ashanti - besides yourself, who do you think will be the best pro?

Said Ashanti:
Why you never were at the state gloves Mel. Thank you for the advice also.
I'm pretty sure I first met you at the State GG several years ago. However, I am not a GG fan - I don't like the fact that they break the rules and the people in charge in So. Cal. are not very nice (I'm sure you remember last year's battle over whose tournament would advance to the Nationals!). I'm not very popular because I won't allow the rules to be broken, especially when it affects the boxers. But I will be at the Western Trials and the Box-offs next year.

Thanks for listening to my advice. Since I want to see you boxers get better and learn more, I speak from my 20 years of judging and 9 years of computer tech experience in order to pass on knowledge that will, hopfully, make your performance in the ring better. And, of course, I will always let you know if I think you screwed up! LOL! :P

Do you or anyone else know what Kourtney has been doing? I haven't noticed his name at all this year other than losing in the first round at the 2006 US Championships. Is he still boxing? Amateur or pro?

The last thing I heard about him was when I was at the national G.G this year. I had ask the Mid South coach why was'nt he here and he told the super heavy who's name is Francisco Moncivais had stop him in the bout they had and he advanced and Kourtney did'nt. I was very surprised to here that so that was the last I heard about him. :o

I too am surprised by that outcome. Moncivias did not impress me with his performances at the National Golden Gloves. However, as we all know, styles make fights. So maybe his style is just difficult for Kourtney. It could also be due to an injury or maybe Kourtney wasn't training as hard as he had in 2005. Something seems to have changed based upon his less than stellar performances in early 2006.

Ashanti - Have you competed in any tournaments since the National Golden Gloves or had any bouts against any top amateurs?

I fought Jonte Willis at the end of Sep for the second time. He won a split decision we are now 1 for 1. They had put together a Nor cal team to fight a Tacoma team. Not to make an excuss but I was out of shape I havent been training I took to much time of due to living and relationship problems so I was'nt focus on steady training at all. I put my self in that situtiuation 20 pounds heavier than what I call my ideal wieght which is 215-220 but that won't happen again that's why I was'nt at the Pal but now im back stable and live back by my gym and will be ready for who ever I get put across the ring from.

Life can unfortunately get in the way of boxing! It is good to hear that you will be in shape for 2007.
Luke Runion was about 20-30# too heavy for his bout against the Ukranian boxer earlier this month and it showed. Tim Skolnik was 20# too heavy for a club show bout a month ago and it too showed. Jovonn Carr was about 20-30# over his ideal weight a few weeks ago and it showed. He won, but he needs to get his weight down. It is amazing how much 20# can affect a boxer.
I want the best 201+ boxer to represent the U.S. in China. If that is you, you won't get a chance to prove it if you are not in top shape. Good luck in 2007.

i just want to announce that if this boxing thing doesnt work out I've always considered becoming a competitive eater. When I was 15 I ate 78 chicken wings in a half hour and they were doused in hot sauce, not drinks were allowed to calm my runny nose and tears. I lost to a man who was 400 lbs. He had me by 20 wings. Ashanti is tough, I think he did get robbed. 13-12 and one dude walks out the ring with a broken nose, I think we know who won that fight. For that reason, I think Ashanti is the sleeper at Super. Plus he really feels robbed. Eugene took his check, 500 dollars a month is no joke.

Luke - stay away from the wings until after the tourneys are over!!! LOL.
Eugene gets the stipend and then turns pro. The money should then go to his toughest opponent at the US Championships which would be Ashanti. Damage done in the ring doesn't always mean anything. I have seen guys with a broken nose clearly win. However, I have also seen them lose, but still get the decision somehow. I didn't see the bout between Ashanti and Eugene so I can't comment on that bout specifically.

I watched Wilson in the Italy competion were he lost to a Hungarian. The Amatuer level was low for him, very slow and brawling. I competed in the Natl Golden Gloves, lost to Joell Godfrey in the quarters. I am training in Europe now, and from what I have seen, in Russia, Belarus, the USA heavies, 91 KG and 91 KG ++ Have a long way to go to get to the elite level unfortunately. In the pros it is diffrent, longer rounds etc. Now if was like it was years ago, 3 x 3 min rounds in the amatuer also. But lately alot of eastern europen heavies are making noise in the pros also.
