Found this stuck inside a copy of The Ring record book - 1953 edition. No mention of what newspaper it came from but it's dated Aug. 13, 1954:
There is tragedy in some of the revocations of licenses for mental conditions. A boxer barred forever last month once ranked fourth in his class. He boxed many main events, some in the Garden, defeated Kid Gavilan, Laurent Dauthuille, KO'd Paddy Young, fought a draw with Jake LaMotta. Yet at 25 years, with pugilism his only means of livlihood, commission specialist have correctly ruled him unfit to box and probably saved him from becoming punch-drunk. One queer angle in his case is that he was officially re-instated July 7th but permission to renew his license was denied August 4th. I understand some influence was used to procure the reinstatement but a re-check by the physicians and Christenberry prevented this alleged heartless situation which would have prevented a fighter with a probable brain injury to risk death in action.
