the idea of this forum is not to promote other forums spudly, if you want to contribute then do it for this forum, not just to try and gain traffic for boxing talk and ben careys new site !!

so therefore, if you write an article, just cut and paste the words onto here, then the traffic stays here, its easy really.

and if you are wondering why i have this attitude, then its because its the same attitude that you have when people put 'links' onto your forum. but im not resorting to the anglo saxon stuff that you spout behind your keyboard.

Christmas wishlist: Top 10 British fights for 2007

As fight fans we all crave for the very top fights on the domestic scene, Oliver Fennell of ukboxingpress.co.uk lists his “wish list” for 2007, as you read through it you will see he has thought of some mouth watering match ups … will they happen?

1- Junior Witter v Ricky Hatton, WBC and IBF light welterweight titles

Why? This potential match-up is arguably the most eagerly anticipated all-British showdown since Eubank-Benn and Lewis-Bruno. It has been talked about even since the days when Hatton and Witter were domestic contenders rather than world champions. Every boxing fan in Britain has been calling for it, yet Hatton has repeatedly claimed the fight won’t sell. Make of that what you will. Few would claim Hatton was scared of any man, but there’s no good reason to avoid the fight, especially now that Witter has the WBC belt. Presuming Hatton regains the IBF belt against Juan Urango on January 20, and Witter retains his portion against Arturo Morua earlier the same night, a clash between the two would be not only boxer versus puncher, style against substance, and a genuine grudge match, but also the first-ever unification of big-three belts between two British fighters. It would sell out any arena in this country. Yes, Ricky, it really would!

Who would win? It all depends on which Ricky Hatton turns up. That’s not to say he’s typically been erratic, but rather to apply the cliché of “you’re only as good as your last fight”. The Hatton who ran Kostya Tszyu out of town would send Witter packing in short order, but the unimaginative slugger who was almost upset by Luis Collazo last time out would be stood on his head by the Ingle-schooled nightmare. In all likelihood, the Hatton who faces Witter will be somewhere between the two extremes, but it’s such a difficult pick that I think we should wait a few short weeks and see how The Hitman looks against Urango before jumping to any predictions.

Will it happen? I suspect not, and even if it does, it won’t be until late in the year. Hatton has Urango to contend with next month, followed by a provisional date with Jose Luis Castillo in May. After that, who knows, but Hatton’s reluctance to face Witter before makes it seem unlikely that he will now. Witter’s best hope lies in Hatton losing to Urango or Castillo, after which he might look to The Hitter as an alternative route back to a title.

2- Clinton Woods v Joe Calzaghe, IBF light heavyweight title

Why? Calzaghe has traditionally struggled to get meaningful contests at the highest level and continues to do so even after his pasting of Jeff Lacy in March. Sakio Bika meant next-to nothing, and Peter Manfredo means little outside of the American armchair audience. Working on the assumption a Mikkel Kessler fight can’t be made (although I’d love to be proved wrong), then Calzaghe against Woods is the most important fight out there for Joe. For Woods, too, it would be the best available contest and, if he wins, a validation of his worth among the sport’s elite. Roy Jones or Bernard Hopkins have bigger names, sure, but a win by Calzaghe or Woods over either of those aging warriors would surely be tempered by suspicions of them being over the hill. Calzaghe-Woods would be a huge fight in Britain , with a bit of needle between the two, and likely to be a crowd-pleasing spectacle.

Who would win? Unless Calzaghe suffers a Hatton-like nightmare due to moving up a division just for the sake of it, then he should have a bit too much for Woods. The Sheffield fighter possesses typical northern grit and fine textbook skills, but is a consummate boxer rather than a dynamic talent. Calzaghe’s handspeed would probably make the difference in a hard-fought affair and carry him to a close but unanimous decision.

Will it happen? Fifty-fifty. Calzaghe can’t make his mind up whether he wants to move up to light heavyweight to become Wales’ first two-division champ, or stay at super middle and continue chasing Joe Louis’ world record of 25 defences (Manfredo, on April 7, represents number 20). There’s also bad feeling between the relevant promotional camps, but bigger rivals than allegedly and Dennis Hobson have worked together before when the fights have been big enough. And American TV should be interested in the light of Woods’ win over Johnson. So there’s little to stop it happening; it just depends which path Calzaghe wishes to pursue.

3- Enzo Maccarinelli v David Haye, WBO cruiserweight title

Why? Young, charismatic, exciting, power-punching and vulnerable - and that describes both men! For top-level fireworks, this is probably the most enticing all-British match-up that could be made next year. Maccarinelli is WBO champion but his credentials have a somewhat hollow feel to them, coming as they did without unseating a reigning monarch (he was “upgraded” following Johnny Nelson’s retirement). He would validate his position with a win over Haye, who is respected on both sides of the pond and handsomely ranked by three of the four major sanctioning bodies. Victory for Haye would be the coronation of a man who has been groomed for world championships since the day he turned pro. But whoever wins, the true victor would be the fans, who are so rarely treated to 50-50 showdowns between two such exciting punchers in their primes.

Who would win? Both have the same strengths – one-shot power – but have differing weaknesses. These negatives are just as much a factor in this fight’s appeal as the positives. Maccarinelli has been knocked down three times but has been the 12-round distance twice, while Haye takes a good shot but has suspect stamina. So logic suggests it would either be Haye early or Maccarinelli late. Either way, this surely wouldn’t last the distance. It might come down to who can take the other’s punch better, rather than who can land the better punch. Maccarinelli might be the harder puncher by a fraction, but if the likes of Lee Swaby and Bruce Scott can drop him, then Haye can finish him.

Will it happen? Extremely unlikely. Both boxers seem to want it, but as ever their paths are dictated by those with a financial interest in them, and there’s a lot of money to be made off the backs of these two promoters’ dreams without risking them yet in a fight that could still be built up further. Warren (Maccarinelli’s promoter) in particular has often been criticised for tardy matchmaking, and he will know Enzo’s whiskers will probably not contribute to a long reign. Haye, meanwhile, despite calling out Maccarinelli publicly, has insisted he has no designs on the WBO belt and is mandatory challenger for the more prestigious WBC strap. Sorry, folks, but this one’s on hold for now – and maybe for good.

4- Matt Skelton v Audley Harrison, Commonwealth heavyweight title

Why? Harrison revived not only his own career but also others’ faith in him with his December trouncing of former conqueror Danny Williams. He was supposed to have fought Skelton on that night and most considered a Harrison defeat to be a foregone conclusion. But now Skelton-Harrison is a live fight which throws up all sorts of questions: Did Harrison’s win against an ill-prepared Williams flatter him? Or did it herald the arrival of Harrison as a genuine threat? Can Harrison cope with Skelton’s pressure, or will he outbox his super-strong but predictable rival? Most importantly, it will settle once and for all the issue of who Britain ’s best heavyweight is after a string of blockbuster affairs between the trio, with the winner finally standing in world title contention.

Who would win? If we follow formline, then it would have to be Harrison . Both have won and lost against Williams, but Skelton’s revenge was on points, while Harrison ’s came via early stoppage. Of course Williams’ scant preparation will have been a factor in this, but Harrison ’s result was undeniably impressive however you looked at it. If Skelton meets Harrison without a warm-up, the earliest will be April, by which time Matt will have been inactive for nine months. At 40, he might grow old overnight, too, even allowing for his relatively short pro career. Presuming Harrison carries the confidence he showed in the Williams rematch into a Skelton clash, he has all the advantages – momentum, form, activity level, age and size. That should be enough for a points win.

Will it happen? Well, that’s the plan. Harrison is out again on February 17, keeping busy while Skelton nurses the broken hand that scuppered their intended December meeting. After that, he wants a world title eliminator, with Skelton being the logical target. For his part, Skelton has now been waiting for a year and a half for allegedly to deliver on his promise of a world title shot, so hopefully a match with Harrison will be afforded official alphabet recognition. But whatever the billing (and Skelton is the Commonwealth kingpin), this promises to be a huge fight for Britain and, assuming Harrison’s own plotline of eliminator status is agreed, there’s no reason why this can’t go ahead in the first half of the year.

5- Jon Thaxton v Amir Khan, British lightweight title

Why? Because, much like Audley Harrison before him, unrealistic demands are being made of Khan by the general public and certain broad-spectrum sports writers, who think Olympic success should automatically translate to immediate professional glory. Harrison undeniably had it harder in this department, but some are growing impatient of Khan’s “bum of the month” campaign. Let me make it clear that I am not among that number, as I know professional prospects tread a time-honoured path, but Khan himself is now talking of a world title within his next five fights, which can only increase the pressure from viewers and journalists. A world title in that time frame is surely unrealistic, but Khan should be in a position for domestic honours by December 2007, when he turns 21 and therefore becomes eligible under BBBC rules.

Who would win? That depends when it happens, although presumably it wouldn’t be until December anyway, unless the Board make an exception to their rule. Without the incentive of the belt, there’s little to justify risking Khan against Thaxton. If for some reason they were to fight early in the year, Thaxton would probably have too much strength, experience and tenacity for a Khan who, for all his talents, has not yet been properly tested, especially against anyone with a dig to speak of. It could be too much, too soon. But it might be a different story by the end of the year, with Khan having physically matured a little more and gained further seasoning over longer fights, while Thaxton puts more miles on an already-weathered engine.

Will it happen? No, for the reasons above. Before December, Khan can’t compete for the belt anyway, and he likely won’t face Thaxton in a non-title affair. In 12 months’ time, battle-worn Thaxton might not still be champion, or even in the sport anymore, plus there’s the increasing likelihood as Khan develops that he will make a permanent move into the light welterweight division.

6- Jamie Moore v Bradley Pryce, British and Commonwealth light middleweight titles

Why? It would be a collision of two boxers who are never in a bad fight. Moore secured himself in domestic folklore with September’s win over Matthew Macklin in what was something of a British Corrales-Castillo, while Pryce usually neglects his gifts of height and reach by getting involved in ill-advised tear-ups. Not only would this be a tinderbox affair, it would also unify two important titles and propel the winner towards world contention.

Who would win? Pryce would relish getting in the trenches with Moore , and trainer Enzo Calzaghe would burst several blood vessels as he did so. Pryce might well outbox Moore in the early stages, using his considerable advantages in height (four inches) and reach (six inches), but the Salford man would likely drag him into a dogfight and grind out a late stoppage. But bear in mind Pryce has been known to spring upsets from out of the red corner before.

Will it happen? Probably not. Moore is seeking bigger things after claiming ownership of the Lonsdale belt, and team Pryce declared in Boxing Monthly that for some reason they are “not remotely interested” in the British title. Presumably Moore will vacate and vie for European honours or beyond, while Pryce is probably a year away from stepping up the next level. He can make decent money and build momentum by defending his Commonwealth strap, but it looks as though Moore will not be one of his challengers.

7- Carl Froch v Glenn Catley, British and Commonwealth super middleweight titles

Why? Short of a challenge to Joe Calzaghe, which remains unlikely, the best domestic fight for Froch could be against former WBC champion Catley, who launched a comeback in November. Froch has established British supremacy but remains without options at world level. A win over Catley, who while undoubtedly is past his best but is a well-known name, would give Froch his first world titlist’s scalp and would provide a bit of bargaining power. Catley is perhaps unrealistically talking of regaining major belt, and he may have to gamble to force that aim. An upset win over one of the division’s “next big things” should see him gatecrash the rankings. Also, Catley is rarely in a bad fight, making a clash with the flashy Froch a potential crowd-pleaser, too.

Who would win? Froch would almost certainly have too much youth, energy and power for the gritty veteran. Catley did impress in his first comeback outing, but beating Hussain Osman – even by two-round TKO – proves very little at a higher level, and Froch would surely have achieved a similar result. The jury is out on Catley’s comeback until he meets stiffer opposition, but for now you’d have to say all the signs point to a Froch stoppage in the middle rounds.

Will it happen? I reckon not. Catley is only 34 despite his long career and will probably want about 12 months to get some momentum going in his comeback before launching an assault on titles, while Froch could contend for the European belt in lieu of world opportunities. If he is still Commonwealth champion later in the year and still being held back internationally, Froch could do a lot worse than take on Catley, but both seem to have separate agendas at time of writing.

8- Michael Hunter v Esham Pickering II, British and Commonwealth super bantamweight titles

Why? Pickering has been kicking himself ever since Hunter rose from his second knockdown when these two last met in October 2005. Hunter survived, went on to win the fight and eventually compete for a world title. Meanwhile Pickering saw a world shot of his own go begging due to injury, only to see Valdemir Pereira upset on the night by a man of arguably lesser standing than Esham. Finally, he was pegged back by Bernard Dunne for European honours. But it wasn’t a happy ending for Hunter, either, as his IBF challenge ended in a heavy defeat at the hands of Steve Molitor, putting his top-flight limitations into perspective for now. Both men need a good win to return to contention and a rematch between them would be a logical step, seeing as their original meeting was close and exciting.

Who would win? I suspect Pickering would gain revenge this time. Both suffered significant defeats last time out, and while Hunter’s was at the higher level, it may have been a confidence-crusher. He’s a hard man to write off and would no doubt bring his trademark aggression and fitness to the table once more, but being so thoroughly exposed in elite class may have taken something out of him. Pickering , too, has failed dramatically in a world title attempt – in 72 seconds to Mauricio Martinez in 2000 – but that was an out-of-the-blue opportunity in which he had nothing to lose. Hunter worked so hard to earn his shot and it must have been heartbreaking to have been beaten so easily when riding a wave of confidence. If they fought again, I feel Pickering would outbox a Hunter who will remain spirited but not as effective as he was last time.

Will it happen? Perhaps. Pickering has built this up as a grudge match in his own mind, as he feels Hunter has “owed” him a rematch and failed to oblige. A return would be a natural and I’m sure Hunter would gladly go in with Pickering again now that his own world title agenda has been met.

9- Gary Lockett v Ryan Rhodes II, WBU middleweight title

Why? The first fight was close, if not controversial, and exciting enough to warrant a re-run. Lockett is talking of moving on to genuine world title opportunities, but for now there is an air of unfinished business with Rhodes . A more emphatic win for power-puncher Lockett would be a good launchpad towards the international scene, while revenge for veteran Rhodes would be a resurrection of one of Britain ’s more charismatic performers. Either way, the fans would be the winners in what would likely be another fascinating encounter.

Who would win? It would probably be a repeat performance – hard-fought, with shifts of momentum, but Lockett’s youth and greater firepower prevailing again against a Rhodes whose current reputation is actually built on that one losing performance. He hasn’t beaten a notable fighter since Scott Dixon in 2004 and while he evidently can still hold his own at this level, I suspect he can’t quite win in this class anymore.

Will it happen? Probably. Both boxers have agreed to it in principle and neither has a fight lined up in the interim. Lockett needs it to validate his world level aspirations, and Rhodes needs it to save his career. Neither boxer can move forward without a win against the other, and they both know this. With both in the same promotional stable, expect a rematch to go ahead by spring or early summer.

10- Ovill McKenzie v Peter Oboh, Commonwealth light heavyweight title

Why? It may be a match between a Nigerian and a Jamaican with an unremarkable combined record of 27-11, but for a pure action, I can’t imagine a more potent pairing to be made in a British ring. McKenzie is an aggressive former journeyman who hit a rich vein of form culminating in a dramatic September upset of Peter Haymer for the Commonwealth belt. Oboh is a sickeningly-hard puncher who has been so avoided that he had only engaged in 19 fights across 13 years. He is now 38 and looking to make a final title run. McKenzie is one of the few titleholders who might voluntarily accommodate him and it would surely be an all-out war.

Who would win? This is a tough one to pick due to Oboh’s age and inactivity (he hasn’t fought since May 2004). The man who pegged back four capable title opponents between 2002 and 2004 would probably soak up McKenzie’s work and bludgeon him to a late stoppage defeat, but we have to assume the layoff will have harmed Oboh, and so the pick would be for McKenzie – who has never been halted – to grind out a tumultuous victory on points.

Will it happen? McKenzie has a Commonwealth defence against Dean Francis on February 9 and typically starts as underdog. If he adds yet another upset to his giant-killing resumé, he would be free to accommodate Oboh. Meanwhile, Oboh may have his vacant British title shot against Tony Oakey rescheduled following his injury withdrawal from the original December fixture. Ideally, McKenzie and Oboh would both win their fights and clash in an intense double-title duel, but even if there were no belts on the line, this would still be a corker. But both men remain well under the radar of all but the most hardcore of fans and, as such, I fear this is one item on the wishlist that will go unfilled.

What do you think??

And face the simple fact Rhino there are a lot of readers on this forum who enjoy reading ukboxingpress.co.uk .... please view for yourself and you will see.

So give up your pathetic childish and rather sad vendetta and accept I am around to discuss boxing and support the sport and despite your pathetic comments I am still around.
its ally pally for me in january, then vegas for the pbf v dlh megafight !! not interested in hatton v urangotan... not as a PPV anyway im afraid, but i wish ricky well, he is a decent fighter, a decent human being and above all he is british. its just some of his arse lickers i dont have anytime for !! as for you joining me in vegas, i cant be arsed with you begging me to let you get whores back to the hotel room, just not my scene at all, and as a married man you should know better !!

as for you being here to discuss boxing...it was not me that said i was leaving here etc etc .. IT WAS YOU !! .. HAVE YOU GONE BACK ON YOUR WORD OR IS BOXING TALK TOO QUIET !!

the article is a very good one, an excellent one in fact, there are excellent articles on lots of sites, its just that wankers ban people from sites due to their own agenda, and that stops decent articles being read by many fans.

Whe you were offered to get into those shows did you refuse ... nah didn't think you did.

As for the internet ... you are an expert ... tell the forum why you had to rush back from London one time at 3 in the morning ... something to do with photos on the internet wasn't it ... and then had to explain your actions to your kids!!!

Main event = crap.

Undercard = Excellent. Far better than most PPV's in recent times, and I'm talking Warren and FA based.

I don't want to get involved, but the FA equivelent (UK leg of a Hatton US PPV) was far worse last time out. What was it, Woods vs Jason De Lisle - I cannot remember the rest.

Then we had Thompson against the fat French guy as chief support to Hatton vs Maussa.

Don't worry, this is not an anti Spud post - plenty of Warren undercards have left alot to be disired. What was the chief support to Hatton vs Tszyu - Danny Williams one round blowout (when has the happend last).

Then you had Hatton vs Olivera for the Williams vs Klitchsko - with an even worse undercard. Krence vs McDermott.

Then you had Murray vs Earl (good fight) and an atroucious undercard (Power vs Codet) for Williams vs Tyson.

So all in all, this Henessey card more than holds up to the recent PPV's that have taken place.

correct about the rushing back from london, it was a nightmare when my ex wife busted my dodgy email 'sausage' account..... as for explaining things to my kids, wrong there im afraid, inter marital disharmony is not my kids business. but hey, im divorced now, so nothing can touch me...

but...

you are not divorced. married man plus whores is not too good. neither is exposing oneself to a poor young cleaner/bar girl in the hotel next to the wembley conference centre... 'tuesday' was her name..do you remember mr spudly??.... :TU:

and of course i did not refuse entry into shows, i was giving you money (as was my ex girlfriend) and, instead of taking it to the front desk as you stated, you were pocketing it, behind promoters backs, AND THIS HAPPENED MANY TIMES !! .... :TU:

if i was you i would give up spudly, before i really bury you !! :D

He only brings arguments to the board, non-boxing arguments and he has banned half of the baord from various sites when someone foolishly gave him moderator powers. He hated Hatton when he was working for h~Hennessey, now that he is working for FA he loves Hatton. He has no credibility and everyone knows he is a sponger and now rhino has embarrassed him further by letting it be known that spud was trying to get prostitutes in vegas. Wonder what his wife and children think about that.

F*ck off Spud, do us all a favour.
I bet even the pro's didn't want the ugly cnuts money.

Boxing News confuses me with their preview...is Cristian Mijares defending against Masamori Tokuyama or Katsushige Kawashima? Think Mr. Abrams was writing a preview for two different fights :-?

Spud.. You threw down an ultimatum and demanded two
members of this forum get banned before you came back
here.

I reckon you owe the mods here an apology. I don't mind your presence
on here. You know nothing thus of no consequence, but demanding
how the mods should act on a board that isn't yours is out of order
and doubly out of order the moment you try to sneak back in you
cretinous tw*t.

Are you working your way up towards being Don King's right
hand man/asslicker/cheerleader? If you are get a clue about boxing
first! :box:
