Your Prospects for 2007

Post by Old bones Ian »

So who do you think will come through in 2007?

One for me who will make an impact is George Katsimpas, he's an experienced martial artist, who has held many titles in Kick Boxing.
I've watched him in a couple of his pro fights, and he's one of the strongest middleweights i've seen, still a bit raw and wild, but exciting and go's for the KO in every round.

Abner Mares.

Still think Jason Litzau could come again also.

I am unconvincerd by Litzau from what i haver seen so far, his defence is seriously wide open.

You're backing the wrong horse with Litzau Stu. There's just no strength to him at all, he just looks like a little kid in there. He does have some good things about him, the way he puts his punches together for example, but there are just too many weaknesses in the overall package for him to make any sort of impact on world level. Especially fighting at weights which are traditionally the strongest in terms of depth.

Berto looks one to get behind next year. And remembering how good he looked in the Olympics, Tajbert might be one to watch. He looks like a really clever, stylish boxer.

Thats what I like about Litzau. I generally agree with your post, but I haven't seen a prospect put his punches together like that in a long long time. So natural.

He reminds me, in many ways, of a young Alex Arthur. Probably a tad better at that stage of his career. Hope he can learn as Arthur has done so. Alot will depend on his weight, not much depth at Featherweight and a very beatable IBF champion at Super Feather.

Tajbert hasn't deserved the slating that Holdsworth has given him on Eurosport, he hasn't done alot wrong - but he doesn't have the power to go beyond Intercontinental Level, IMO.

Does Marco Huck still qualify as a prospect?

How often do we see prospects who have their good points cancelled out by major faults. I feel that Litzau falls into that category. However good his combination punching and timing is, unless he improves his defence considerably he's going to keep getting into trouble when someone takes those shots and is still there. You're right about him being like Arthur, I've never thought about that. If he learns from his defeat in the way Arthur did, then he might be able to come again.

Huck hasn't won a major title yet, has he? I'd say that he's still a prospect, although I'm not sure that everyone would agree.

I think Tajbert can get to world level, he just needs to be matched right. A Pacquiao type fighter, all pressure and power, will give him fits, but he's clever enough to compensate for his lack of power and natural strength against most styles.

Yeah i was impressed with Fewkes, think he might surprise some people who don't think he'll go far because of his lack of a KO punch. He's really high energy and has a good variety of punches, also looks to have a decent chin.

Couple of new faces at heavy with David Dolan and Scott Belshaw, still to early to say if either will have any impact on the british scene.

There's loads of lads in and around lightweight/light-welter who will be stepping up next year, Gary Buckland , Michael Grant, Kell Brook , Paul McCloskey , Martin Gethin , Shane Watson. Just to name a few of them.

Not convinced about John Murray, I'm afraid Terrence. Tidy boxer no doubt who I am sure will get to British level and minor world title level. Not sure if he can progress much further (would depend on the champion). There are Europeans out there (likes of Cyril Thomas currently) who are miles away from the top ten - think Murray would beat them, but that would be about it.

John Fewkes is a good call though, lacks power and strength in his punches - but if he can take a good shot and don't cut then I think he can go a fair bit further than where he is currently. If I knew what he was like at absorbing shots I would favour him over Murray now.

Still think on a domestic front that Amir Khan is a far and away the best prospect. Not flawless, far from it - but has alot of things over our fellow prospects in terms of ability. Not sure if he will get to world level (cause I don't know about his defence/chin) but I think he would outclass Murray - Fewkes might be more interesting.

Munyai looked the goods to me last time out. Think he can go on to achieve big things.

Yes, Munyai looked very handy in his two outings over in Britain. But after the performance against Power he was always going to batter the smaller Haskins. Hopefully after the upcoming Power rematch we'll see a little more of him.

I thought John Murray looked a great prospect when I first saw him, but I've changed my mind since.

Maybe his recent lacklustre opponents are down to some problems with management.

One the world scene i think that Kevin Johnson can come through , i know he came in for heavy critisism in BN last week but he's not as bad as they say, good skills, just needs a bit more self belief.

Bowie Tupou is a heavyweight boxer based in Australia , origanally from Tonga, he's in a similar mold to Tua, heavy handed and powerful, he's only 24 , and pretty untested, but looks like he could be handful for any of the british heavies in the future.

although probably already a little better than 'prospect' status, i fancy ricky burns and munyai to really break through this year.

i personally don't think fewkes is strong enough to move up in class though he's quite a nice boxer, but watch out for Muhsen Nasser- Junior Witter's main sparring partner and a very classy, very fast young light-welter.

I was very impressed with Fewkes, lovely timing, flexibilty, and a natural combination puncher with good accuracy. Good and aggresive too. If he can work on the body punching a bit more, could turn into more of a devastating hitter and get more stoppages.

Dolan could be good at LH, should carry some power in any case.

Litzau looks awful. From the Main Events camp, I still think Joel Julio can make it to the top. He was put in too early with a world class southpaw. He has the look of a young Simon Brown - same weight class as well. He did about as well as Berto - another welter prospect - vs tough gatekeeper Cosme Rivera.

I like Chavez Jr. Great repertoire of shots. Needs to work on defense though ALL prospects are learning, naturally, and do things wrong at times.

Murray hasn't been firing on all cylinders. He's still a developing fighter and he's developing a pro style. I know Sky moan about him not throwing enough punches sometimes. But the time I recall, it was following a fight where they were criticising his defense. So it's not surprising that he was using subtle sidestepping and concentrating a fair bit on blocking shots.

Very tidy boxer. But when he digs in, his body shots are wicked. He's also doing things the "right way" - getting fights in America and Canada, on significant shows (Lacy-Reid, Mayweather-DLH).

Munyai & Olusegun are ahead of Khan - way ahead. Why? Because they've been in FIGHT type fights. ie Ajose-Pryce/Numbembe and Munyai-Haskins/Power 1,2 were contests where they took shots, and came back with better. Never mind that both were bad last time.

Khan of course will do well when he's ready and he will get the bigger spotlights. He has the name, the exposure, the Olympic background & the raw talent. Emphasis on raw.

ive been told his finished he has arm/shoulder problems thats why he lost his last one and can only throw one hand
Thats a shame if he has to pack it in, maybe the mixed martial arts did some damage before he turned pro.

anyone know why Shane Watson hasn't been in the ring this year?

On the world stage Zolani Tete a flywieght from South Africa could be one to look out for, 7 fights 7 KO's , takes a step up next time out fighting for the WBF title, not a great title, but will let us see him get tested a bit more
