Tapes: Chandler-Solis I, Richardson-Perez

Post by Barney Ross' Neighbor »

Can anyone help me find VHS tapes of the first Jeff Chandler-Julian Solis bout from Nov. 1980 and the Greg Richardson-Raul Perez bout from 1991? I've looked on several collector websites but haven't spotted these. Funny how even the most obscure, crappy fight in the heavier weights was televised somewhere, but even title bouts in the lighter divisions are ignored. Do people really prefer mating hippo heavyweight contests over the speed and stamina of the littler guys?

I myself have been unable to find the Chandler-Solis I fight. All I have is a 1 minute clip of the TKO. Odd thing about Chandler, as dominant as he was as a bantam he lost the title to Richie Sandoval when he was only 28 years old and never fought again.

Joltin' Jeff

Chandler retired after the loss to Sandoval because of eye problems. He had been diagnosed with cataracts two years before, but put off surgery to continue his career. He finally had the operation after the Sandoval fight, but decided that a comeback was too risky. So, he wisely hung up the gloves. His career was brief but distinguished. He had only two amateur bouts before turning pro in 1976. His debut was a draw, but then he went undefeated until 1983. Jeff's entire Hall of Fame career consisted of just 39 bouts over seven years. Last news I hear of him is that he's doing well living in Philly working in construction and as a school aide. So Jeff seems to be a boxing rarity - successful career and retirement.
