The only fight I saw of him was on ESPN they showed him fighting Joe Louis. Outside of the knockdown he didn't do a whole lot. Although he didn't look all that great I thought it simply had more to do with Louis being a superior fighter.
After the fight they showed the Galento interview and he was trying to say how it was his corners fault that he lost and if only he would have been allowed to stick with his original game plan the outcome would have been different. I guess thats the kind of thing a fighter says after a loss but I believe he was the only guy to have thought that.

Yeah! been looking at some Galento threads on here where people are singing his praises, dont see it myself. In the Baer fight it seemed he was starting to get really hammered in the last round, next thing he retired with a" broken hand ". Amazed he beat LouNova who seemed a better fighter from what I have seen but then again I guess thats what makes boxing so interesting .

This man wasn't a boxer. He just went in and slugged. He fought every fight just like it was a street fight. Did anything and everything to win or to get an advantage and was often DQ'd. He was a tough SOB and was one of the more harder punching men of his era and with his charisma he was a hard man to not like.
I remember reading how his fight with Max Baer was so heavily contested they said you could hear the most vile obscenities from both fighters mouths from the 'nose bleed' seats. This man, in my opinion, would probably have faired better in the old bare knuckle days, and if he was alive today, I don't think he would have been a boxer, he would have opted for a UFC ring.

Yep! he was a great character (appeared in the film "on the waterfront") but he seemed very very open,I guess you have to admire a bloke who gets in the ring with the likes of Baer 6.4 ht. and brother Buddy Baer 6.6 ht. only stands 5.9 himself and proceeds to attempt to kick the sh@t out of them.Very overated in my opinion but a fantastic charachter all the same, which makes boxing FUN!
