That depends on what you call noise
I like Sammy DiPace 112# strong tuff lil boxer his straight ahead style wont work against the top guys in the open division (Raushee Warren) but he works very hard and has a great father coach behinde him he should make the transition well.

Roberto Marroquin119# another strong hard working kid good boxer but speed is going to be a big factor when he goes in with the top in his class
(Gary Russel)i think he will and has suprised a few Senior but no real challenge here

Hylon Willams 125# Havent herd much from him yet does have the skills to transfer to the open class but i dont think hes ready to make a run at
(Mark Davis) but he may suprise a few since there is a big shake up at 125 Sleeper Raynel Willams ohio

Javier Molina 132# he got get pass his older brother 1st
Sleeper Brett Simmons Ohio out of wille Nelsons camp built like Neson 6ft 132 and a very good boxer

Glenn Tapia 147 New Jersey not ready yet

Luis Arias 152 Millwaukee should make it to Nationals but will need a good draw just to get thru the 1st night
I dont see them making much noise are JR'S are not as strong as in the past

THE WATCHER - What about Trevor Bryan, Keith Tapia, Dominic Wade, David Galmore and Gerardo Ibarra? Remember Ibarra defeated Gary Russell, Jr.'s little brother Gary Russell, III. I think he must be pretty good. He also defeated Javier Molina in the J.O. division at the 2006 National PAL tourney.

Sammy DiPace is a very good boxer. I have seen him box 5 or 6 times over the last couple of years. I thought he had defeated Luis Yanez in their bout in the 2005 National J.O. semi-finals. It was a very close bout and Luis has done very well in the open-class. However, Sammy will have problems with Raushee Warren as does everyone else in the United States. I do agree with you that this year's J.O.'s may not be as strong as in years past with only a few boxers moving into the senior division and having an immediate impact.

Dominique Dolton and Leandre White both looked good at the Michigan state open tournament. They both won bronze medals at the 2006 National J.O. tourney and were boxing in their first senior tournament. Dominique boxes Javonn Barnes on January 6th which will determine the Michigan champ at 152# who will then move on to the Region V tourney. Leandre White is already the Michigan champ at 141#.

Im sorry but i dont know much about trevor bryan dont even know how to spell his name as for the others you just named

here is a quick assement
Tapia had him in camp and he had trouble with Galmore and Galmore only has about 12 to 15 fights Tapia is not ready

Galmore tough and hard nosed but not enough bouts to be taken serious

Wade
the kid listens to people telling him hes great and he wont work at his craft so the gig is up he will be exposed at the next level not ready for prime time

Ibarra works hard very dedicated listens well but some what limited in his abillities not ready but working hard to be all he can be
.
sammy, roberto, luisArias,Ibarra give all about 2 years or so and they can make a run for 2012
Wade is just hype and Tapia is not a heavy wt

Watcher - What do you mean Keith Tapia is not a heavyweight? Is he just a bloated middleweight or something? Not strong enough to tango with the big boys?

Trevor Bryan is a big boy - about 6'5" or 6'6" as of June 2005 and may be bigger now. He was only 15 at that time. I think he was at the training camp after the 2005 National J.O. tourney in Brownsville, Texas. I don't think he made it to the camp in Marquette though. I don't remember how good he was, I just remember he was big and had decent power at just 15 years old and had a lot of RSC wins. I would like to see how he looks now. He is a year and a half older, more mature and probably stronger. We'll see if he enters the senior tournaments in 2007. Does anyone on this site know anything about this young man? He is from Albany, NY.

Clarence - I didn't mention Jesus Mendez because he was already in the Senior division at the beginning of 2006.
Hylon Williams is good, but not quite ready for the top Seniors in my opinion. If you think he is ready, then why don't you think Manuel de la Cruz from Port Arthur, Texas is even more ready since he beat Hylon in the J.O.'s this year?
Jessie Vargas at 165? He boxed at 141 at the 2006 National PAL or is it a different Jessie Vargas?

Im very high on Randy Cabrolero a lil guy with a good punch I dont think hes ready for
Lil Louie Yanez yet but he could suprise Roberto Cerone
Manny Cruz had the best basic fundamentals of that JR group

Dennis
We put Tapia on a scale he might wt 185 on the days he didnt run because of numerous injuries and he has got some fat on him which means he needs to go down
but he has coaches in his gym tellin him hes the next HVY WT Champ so hes not in the right wt class HE IS NOT A HVY WT .

I understand. How tall is he?
Jordan weighs about 190, but that is with running hard & working out hard everyday. His bodyfat is pretty low and his muscles are getting larger. I'm trying to put another 10 pounds of muscle on him.

I think Kieth is a lil bit over 6'1 and 185 but he wont run because doesnt want to lose any wt his coaches want him heavy he is just a 178 who needs to get in shape
Jordan has a much bigger frame and A BIGGER UPSIDE!

Baller I dont know the 106 Lozano but if he beat randy he is someone to watch out for .

My thoughts on the below opinions/observations:
Baller I dont know the 106 Lozano but if he beat randy he is someone to watch out for .
He beat Randy by 2 points. I don't think that means he's someone to watch out for.
THE WATCHER wrote: Im very high on Randy Cabrolero a lil guy with a good punch I dont think hes ready for Lil Louie Yanez yet
I've known Randy since he started boxing and he's turned into a very competitive skilled boxer with a punch. I think next year's qualifiers will be good experience for him, but I don't think he'll make the 2008 team.
but he could suprise Roberto Cerone
Roberto can't get by Randy's older team mate, Gabino Saenz.

Clarence - Jessie Vargas at 165? He boxed at 141 at the 2006 National PAL or is it a different Jessie Vargas?
Clarence - WHAT Jessie Vargas are you referring to? The Jessie Vargas at the PAL is from Las Vegas and weighs 141. I looked through the results of the U.S. Championships, JOs and PAL and didn't see a Jessie Vargas at 165?????
THE WATCHER - Gerardo Ibarra? Remember Ibarra defeated Gary Russell, Jr.'s little brother Gary Russell, III.
I wasn't much impressed with Gary the 3rd. He has no where near the talent of his older brother.
I think he must be pretty good. He also defeated Javier Molina in the J.O. division at the 2006 National PAL tourney.
By one point. Javier should have won that bout - he just didn't throw enough punches.
Sammy DiPace is a very good boxer. However, Sammy will have problems with Raushee Warren as does everyone else in the United States.
Sammy is another kid I've known since he started. He definitely has power and it will be interesting to see how and what he does in the open division. You're right - I don't think anyone in the U.S. can get past Rau'shee's speed (he slaps a lot, though).
Javier Molina 132# he got get pass his older brother 1st
I take it you're referring to older brother Carlos at 132? Javier has moved up in weight to 141 and, believe me, there is no way their coach would let them box each other. Ever. Besides, I think Javier is a better boxer than Carlos.

2007 is definitely going to be an interesting year of competition.

Mel - You are right 2007 is going to be an interesting year. Do you think the crop of 2006 J.O. boxers is as strong as the groups that came out of the program in the last few years?
The 2006 Senior tournaments showed that a lot of talent came out of the 2005 J.O. class. The prior years also produced a lot. It will be fun to see which juniors from 2006 make a big splash in 2007. DiPace is my leading candidate!

Dennis, I think there are some good boxers coming out of the 2006 JOs - no more or no less than the last couple of years.....but we won't know how well they will do until they're in competition with older, more mature competition. Everyone likes Sammy - he's been an exceptional JO - but how will he do in the senior division? My picks for 2012 candidates, hoping they can make the transition to senior are Randy Caballero, Javier Molina (we'll see how Oscar adapts). Glen and Keith Tapia; Norman Neely isn't a slouch, either. I also like David Garcia, and Roberto Marroquin (who did not look good at the PAL).

Mel - Sammy will do just fine. Do you agree that Keith Tapia should move down to 178 in the Senior division?
Bear Richardson has done fairly well by moving down to 178 as did Cedric Agnew (moving down from 189 in the J.O.'s). There are many others who also moved down while there are others who have moved up. Then others have stayed in the same class from the JO's to the seniors like Mike Wilson. It is fun to watch the Junior division and try to pick out which kids will stick with boxing and succeed in the Senior division.

My fingers are definitely crossed!

I really, REALLY hate the JO weight classes! Depending on Keith's actual weight during tournaments, if he weighs close to 189 that means losing 11+/- pounds to reach the top of the 178 weight class. At 189, he's already in the Senior 201 weight.
It is fun to watch the Junior division and try to pick out which kids will stick with boxing and succeed in the Senior division.
Yeah - and a great deal of the time all predictions don't come true. We'll just have to watch how the kids do in the upcoming qualifiers.

Mel - I just noticed that you mentioned Norman Neely as being "no slouch". Is he someone that you think can compete against the top 201# guys in the Senior division? Did you see him box in Marquette? If not, where? What about Trevor Bryan at 201+?

I saw Norman at the 2005 PAL (first met him there). Great kid! Had problems with the computer scoring. I talked to several of the boxers about how to box with the computer. Norman came and sat with me one night (after he'd lost) and I let him use a battery operated key pad so he would know how to score. He was so excited, he came and had breakfast with me and Rick the next morning to continue the discussion. I saw him at the JOs this year (at 201) and he was 100% better - told me he had never forgotten our discussion in 2005. Saw him again at the PAL this year (at 176) and am still impressed. Another wait and see. I really think most of our good JOs will be the top contenders for the 2012 USA Olympic team. I hope they go through this year's qualifying process for the experience.

I saw Trevor Bryan at the JOs this year and he can actually box. I don't think he stuck in my mind as someone to watch, but I will as he turns senior.

Is he about 6'6" and 250#? That would have been my guess from seeing him at the 2005 National J.O.'s, but he might have gotten taller since then.

Sigh. Dennis, there are just some things I don't pay attention to, like actual weight and height. I don't remember him being that big but I also didn't pay that much attention to him, either. I'm really not fond of the HW and SHW divisons. :box:

Mel, would you mind sharing what you spoke with Norman about on the computer scoring? I've only gotten to fight under the computer once so far, and I would be interested in what you told him.

I am well aware of your near disdain for those divisions - LOL.
I on the other hand as a large man myself appreciate the effort that the big guys put forth. Many people do not realize how difficult it can be to move a big body and how strong those guys can be. I've been hit by some top amateurs and pros and the difference in punching power between the smaller weight classes and the HW and SHW classes is enormous. Yes, a lot of heavyweights may not throw as many punches per round as a lightweight or welterweight, but I would rather be hit by a lot of punches from a smaller guy than just one punch from a good heavyweight!

I understand the addage "different strokes for different folks", but maybe I can convince you that there is something worth watching with the bigger guys.

power

Post by Puncher7 »

Dennis, one thing you have to understand when it comes to power is that while the lower weights may not hit as hard to you as a heavyweight, they are hitting hard when they hit someone their own weight. Of course a big guy can absorb a smaller guy's punches easier. But when 2 smaller guys are fighting the punches are hard AND fast.
