Luis Collazo v Shane Mosley expected (Cintron's out!)

Post by ALI »

From FightNews.com

"Golden Boy Promotions announced today that "due to unforeseen promotional issues," IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron has been withdrawn from his February 10th title defense against "Sugar Shane" Mosley. Golden Boy will proceed with the HBO-televised card at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, and a new opponent for Mosley, which is expected to be former WBA welter champ Luis Collazo, will be announced this week."

This is excellent news and i hope it goes ahead. I'm eager to see how Collazo would perform against somebody of Mosley's caliber so i can better judge Hatton's performance against him.

Personally, i think Mosley has his number, but i will be hoping Collazo can shine here (win or loose) and give Hatton's victory over him a solid formline!

Shane's last two fights have been against a badly faded fighter and Shane has not been the fighter he once was since the first Forrest fight.
Got to disagree Terence. Collazo's size will not trouble Mosley, he's been fighting De La Hoya, Vargas & Wright, all bigger than Collazo. Collazo's power is not up to much, therefor i cannot see him hurting Mosley who's chin is proven against big punchers.

According to boxrec they're both 5'9 and Mosley has 2 inches of reach advantage.

Don't know if Boxrecs right on this because Shane should only give up 1 1/2 inchs to Winky and have a 1inch reach advantage but Winky looked allot bigger. Maybe Mosley just fights small.

Despite going way up in weight Shane has always looked bulky but less rangy than a lot of the guys he has fought.

According to the stats Forrest had a slightly shorter reach than Shane yet he looked like he was packing an extra few inches on Shane. It is not how many inches you have but how you use them (or so I am told) and Collazo, like Forrest, might just them that bit better.

I fancy Collazo to put in a good fight for this one, Shane hooks a lot of his shots so the reach won't make a lot of difference, Collazo could punch straight through and hold Shane off. Shane also jabs with a really straight back and it is coming from that little bit further back, he doesn't really seem to step in with it either so he will probably get beat in the jab battle.

Sky are showing it. It should be an interesting scrap.
Collazo can be very good at range but like Morales he doesnt keep the range and comes inside to brawl. Another advantage Collazo may well have is his workrate and movement and hes a southpaw.

I'm very suprised about this choice in opponent. If I was Shanes manager I would have tried to get Corrales/Castillo/Hatton/Margarito/Forrest/Quartey/Trinidad/Spinks/Mayorga. Because Collazo may well be trickier than all for Shane and theres no reward in this fight

This should be a very interesting fight because we don't really know how much Mosley has left. He got dominated by Forrest, went close with DLH but probably got a gift while not looking the same fighter, got dominated by Winky then had a closer losing effort against Winky, then had a very close fight with Vargas he was a little lucky to win on a tko, then ko'd Vargas. But Vargas is shot to pieces so we really don't know how much Mosley has left and a young top5 Welterweight should tell us allot about how good Mosley is today.

1 thing to remember about this fight is the judges won't do Collazo any favours in a close fight

Remember Hatton is only 5'6 and has a 66inch reach, Mosley is 5'9 and has a 74inch reach. Collazo is going to look rangy next to likes of Hatton.

Think Collazo will win, although it was encouraging to see the improvements Mosley made when back with his father - looked like some of his speed had returned.

Shane's just a bit easy to hit these days, and Collazo has shown he is quite accurate, fast and tough.

I would have tipped Mosley to have blown away Cintron though.

It's a shame this one hasn't come off, Cintron is a great puncher

Bingo Terrence.

Collazo has just the tools that Forrest had, good jab, long reach, height advantage and slickness. The Mosley that lost to Forrest was a long time ago now too, and Shane is slower and less mobile than he was then.

I see this as the end of the line for Shane, he will probably be competitive, but lose, and maybe finally call it a day.

From what I've heard from people who have met Shane, he's nearer 5' 7" than 5' 9".

That ignores the fact Shane had a slightly greater reach than Forrest yet on fight night it looked miles apart in favour of Vernon. Forrest used his punches, stance and especially his jab better.

Shane is a good fighter, he could have been a great lightweight but at the higher weights he had to make himself muscular to look the part. He boxes with an arch in his back, his elbows tucked slightly out at times and throws a lot of jabs from his elbow. It takes away the stats and leaves him as a guy who boxes in a little shell and is made to look small even when stats add up.

Being rangy isn't just about who is taller/has the greater reach on boxrec, Vernon boxed tall and at range with straight shots whilst Shane could not hook beyond them shots. Shane tends to dip forwards when attacking and when defending often leans away from punches giving himself a considerable distance to make up, then he tries the jab before turning it into a left hook. I cannot see it working that well against the straighter shots Collazo can throw plus the southpaw stance may make Collazo look like he has much greater range on his jab.

Collazo can be worked inside but given this fight I think he will keep it at range and Shane will have to force his way inside.
Collazo isn't the boxer Forrest was though despite been good imo. He may keep it on the outside but he hasn't kept it on the outside with Hatton/Rivera by choice because he likes to mix it up.

Collazo also isn't as defensively minded or skilled as Winky/Forrest. Mosleys shown he still has the power and his straight right/hook may take Collazo out. Theres also the possibility Mosley may just walk through Collazo and destroy him.

Theres also the question of whos faster - it should be Mosley.

Has anyone else scored Winky-Mosley 2 near a draw? I did and Winkys surely a level above Collazo.

Look at Shane standing head 2 head with 5'10 Vargas - he looks as tall

I really like Collazo in this one, Mosley is a bit of a shadow of his former self and no where near as fast. Don't forget the Vargas wins may have flattered him as Vargas looked badly like a shot Boxer.

Anyway i think Collazo has the tools to beat Mosley here and would fancy him for the upset.

Seems that Shane is taller than I thought, well, no matter, it's a question over what Shane has left, he was battered senseless at Welterweight some years ago, by a guy whose style is not entirely dissimilar to Collazo's. Bear in mind that Collazo gave Ricky Hatton all kind of problems, and Hatton is a naturally bigger man that Mosley, who started at lightweight after all, although quite a bit taller than our Ricky, Shane is nowhere near as broad or barrel chested as Hatton. Hatton has a different style of course, but my point is that Collazo is hungry, at his peak, and has the confidence of knowing he could hang with Hatton and hurt him.

I think this fight has come a bit late in Shane's career, he's 35 now and nowhere near the fighter he was 5 years ago.

Collazo has a very good workrate to go with his skills. He had an excellent fight with Jose Antonio Rivera, beating him in his hometown a year or two ago for the WBA welter title. Rivera went on to the the WBA light middle ttile.

Natural size is hard to measure but remember Mosley supposedly weighed 155+ in his lightweight title fights - hes clearly a natural welter.

Mosley supposedly deadlifts 500-600lbs and bench presses 300-400lbs - if these figures are correct he has twice the explosive strength of Hatton on these lifts. Hatton is better at continually using his strength throughout the fight instead of short burts of explosivity though.

At the end of the day styles do make fights and both Mosley and Collazo are still top Welterweights so this should be exciting and Mosley again is taking on another top fighter, which is testiment to the man.

1 thing to ask is - HAS MOSLEY REALLY SLIPPED - he fought Forrest, Delahoya, Winky Wreight back to back. Few in history would look too good paired with those 3 fighters.

I'll go against everyone here and pick Mosley by KO or UD. I don't think Collazo is that good at getting range or keeping it outside and at mid-range is mosleys forte.

I see another nightmare fight for Mosley. Forrest was never considered special before or after Mosley. Collazo has a lot ging for him, including speed, southpaw stance, a fierce workrate, grittiness/toughness.

Mosley has looked shaky a lot of times - his first step out of the lighteight division (I think it was) vs Wilfredo Riveira was a near miss.

Big deal if Mosley can lift those weights, what's that got to do with boxing. Mosley has always been obsessed with lifting weights, but it's not done him any good as he's moved up the weights has it, his recent record is poor. He was absolutely hammered by Forrest in the first fight, and only his chin kept him in it, and even in the 2nd he was whimpering from the body shots he took.

Winky is a naturally defense minded fighter, who was never going to do more than enough to win the fight, so just because Shane was competitive, shouldn't be taken out of context. Shane looked like shit in his 2nd fight with Oscar, and was gifted a decision despite trudging around the ring like an old man chasing young pussy at a nightclub.

I'm not saying Collazo is the future of anything, but I think his showing against Hatton, who has a lot more in the tank than Mosley, spells bad news for Mosley.

Mosley clearly slipped from his top form which was his win over Oscar at Welterweight, he looked strong, mobile, powerful and fast in that fight, and has never really looked as complete a package since, losing a lot of mobility and speed since.

Whats it got to do with boxing? Natural strength - its not everything but its a measure of maximal power and contradicts statements about Mosley been small at 147. Hatton also takes his weight training very seriously. Its if the fighter can use that maximal power effectively or not.

I always thought Forrest was well regarded Pre-Mosley, obviously he wasn't a huge name but obviously he had the ameutur wins over Mosley. He had better speed, jab, right, distant judgement and power than Collazo. But maybe Collazo can pull something out the bag against a past prime Mosley. Lets not forget the Forrest-Mosley rematch was a close affair. If Forrest was so lowly regarded I doubt Delahoya would have avoided the fight with him when he was mandatory (which he did).

And how many people have gone close with Winky? MW King Taylor, Prime Vargas, Prime Harry Simon.....did Trinidad? Nope

All in all its hard to gauge Collazo and Mosley as they havent fought similar opponents or even in the same divisions. Collazo is also untested outside of 140lb Hatton as Rivera is B Grade at best.

These weights Mosley can lift, was that around the time he was working with BALCO? Or more recently?

Trinidad was a shell of a fighter by the time Winky got to him, let's be honest. He was ruined by Hopkins, and flattered my club fighter Mayorga. Forrest was an inconsistent talent who had the tools to beat smaller Mosley, but who Mayorga walked through with impugnity.

I guess we'll see on the night of the fight James. I think you want Collazo to do well after his close fight with Hatton, which you may remember I picked to be a close affair and you picked to be a Hatton blow out. Obviously your opinion of Collazo has gone up. I'm sticking with my Mosley pick for now.

As for Trinidad been shot, he looked world class against Mayorga. Styles make fights and Trinidad has always had problems with boxers

I rate Collazo I just think Mosleys a level above despite the style match up, but we'll see on the night. Maybe I'm underating Collazo but we'll certainly see should be interesting.

Yes, maybe I'm reading too much into Mosley's decline, I've not seen anything from Shane which leads me to believe he is still more than a contender now, although that is maybe enough to get by Collazo.

All in all its hard to gauge Collazo and Mosley as they havent fought similar opponents or even in the same divisions. Collazo is also untested outside of 140lb Hatton as Rivera is B Grade at best.

Getting a little bit better at fight picking :TU:
