Again someone comes on here trying to be clever and makes himself look like an ass.

"Louis" should be pronounced "Louie" as is origins are French...."Lewis" is spoke as it reads.

....and with all that wonderful grammar and spelling in your post - we are very fortunate that we can all take you seriously.

Just to be pedantic, the origins can actually be forgotten here mr Simpsons as the owner of the name can decide, and surely Joe Louis (pronounced LOO-IS) wouldn't get his own name wrong, would he?

Now onto Colin Hart. Fine man, amazing knowledge of the history of this wonderful sport, but of course not above having critical reviews of his work I am sure. The main thing for me is that no matter what anyone thinks - he is 100 (million) times better than the Sun's current Oaf Pat Sheehan - good grief I sometimes wonder if that bloke had ever seen a fight before he got the Sun job.......he is completely inept, gets history wrong almost every time he writes, and I am embarassed if a friend of mine reads his column and then talks to me about boxing as the guy can't write a single mistake-free peice.

If he was a fighter trying to win a world title I'd rank his chances alongside those of Louis Monaco (on a good day....if I was feeling REALLY kind).

But people I know whose opinions I respect say he's ok and he is actually quite well respected in the trade.

I know really this should be a reply to an earlier thread, but I feel it deserve a new topic all of it own. Wellington writes "highly respected boxing pundit colin hart". Highly respected by who? Does anyone on this forum honestly believe Hart to be some mythical boxing soothsayer or some old has-been journalist who is still feeding of his days at being ringside for Ali, Foreman and Frazier (if he did actually go to them?).........?
He's like a British Larry Merchant in his bumbling, inept style.
Yes John O'Connell is a great prospect, but as topper123 said if who win 2 aba, gold medals at the junior Olympics, four nations, a European bronze medal and then turn pro with one of the best promoters in the country in hardly a wonderful spot if you suddenly notice the kid two years later!
Let's look at his two wonderful other "spots".
2006 John Murray........
I quite like this one, as before Colin picked him as "the one to watch" he appeared on Eurosport as a anaylist with John Murray appearing on the undercard of a show in Canada. Colin post fight review of Murray's performance went something like this "good, but he seems a little big at light-welterweight and will probably grow into a full blown welterweight soon". For the record Murray's weight for that show was 9st 81/2lbs and he was a definite super-featherweight at the time. Hart cocks it up again!
2005 Kevin Mitchell...........
Mitchell wins the senior aba's at 18, turns pro with allegedly allegedly and is called "the Wayne Rooney of boxing". Nearly two years later (come on Colin, catch up) Hart picks him as the man to watch in 2005. Hardly rocket science is it?
For the record I would like to say John O'Connell, John Murray and Kevin Mitchell are all great prospects who I admire. It just that I reckon they deserve a better cheerleader then Colin Hart.

In the 80s I used to read Hart's bits in The Sun round at my nan's. His pieces were always littered with inaccuarcies. He always got the name of the wrong governing body, wrong weight class... When he wrote about old fights he often got the KO round wrong.

I was 13-14 and read each edition of The Ring, KO and Boxing News so many times that I had commited them to memory. I wrote a number of letters (as a young kid might) to The Sun and Colin pointing out the errors but never recieved a reply.

I haven't read any of his columns for a long time so I can't really comment how he is doing these days. In general though the writers do seem to have left the sport and that's a great shame.

His job is to put forward opinions, my only other gripe is that he seems a bit "been there, done that, watched Ali, can't be arsed with the rest of it because boxing is going down the shitter these days", fair enough but in that case why not retire?

Line for line he will probably bury most people on some of the bigger name fighters.

Fair play to Colin recently when he appeared on a Greenberg Eurosport card. He called it as it was - Greenberg was, as usual, unimpressive.

He wasn't invited back to my knowledge (well, he might have been but at least I haven't seen him) but at least he didn't fill the audience with a load of rubbish.

How is the internet to blame? The national newspapers are to blame, as they stopped covering the sport almost universally in the early to mid nineties, as boxing became unfashionable as far as they were concerned.

Very few newspapers have a dedicated boxing writer these days, Colin Hart at the Sun, and Steve Bunce at the Telepgraph, or is it independent?

At one time, every major newspaper had a dedicated boxing writer, and sometimes even with more than one, those days are long gone, and all the money is in writing about football.

Hart is ok, but he hasn't got anywhere near the knowledge of some of the the best boxing writers out there. And where do they write now?
Yes, the internet.

Mike Katz, Kevin Iole, Tom Gerbasi, Doug Fischer, Steve Kim.

If you ask Hart about Bernard Hopkins, he'll be able to tell you he's a good middleweight, but if you ask him about, say Edwin Valero, he probably wont have a CLUE who you are talking about.

The above net writers, plus many more, have a much greater knowledge of the sport than an old news print hack like Hart.

The Sun used to boast that Hart always picked the winner, running a list of all his winning picks.
Then he wrote that Benn would absolutely destroy the great pretender, Chris Eubank.

Oliver holt for the mirror is ok, and James Lawton is an excellent sports writer for the independent, writes eloquently and with great insight on a number of sports, really like his writing, he knows his onions when it comes to boxing as well.

Boxing became unfashionable because of the number of fake championship belts,fights and organisations and rightly so...it only has itself to blame for that...the general public could no longer understand the sport and didn't know who was even the Heavyweight champion...never mind the other weight classes.

If boxing as a whole was of little interest to the general public then Mike Tyson would not have been all over the British tabloids up until now.


Now instead of the sport going back to it's roots and raising new talent in every corner including dedicated boxing writers, as you say....we have a bunch of clowns especially on the British scene that couldn't even write a decent pre-school play yet for some reason feel their voice needs to be heard.

Any kid coming on a boxing forum today will now get bombarded by so called experts spewing their crap, when before the internet these same people would not even get their crap printed in Boxingnews.

This site is one of the best IMO because with it's great boxrec archive it actually serves a factual purpose instead of most others that just serve as a money spinner/and or promotional outlet.

The internet is the future of sports journalism, especially boxing, and plenty of internet journalists know their stuff, and have put in the thousands of hours of research to get to that point. Just because someone hasn't had the grounding of journalistic training, doesn't mean they cannot write. As for not getting published in boxing news, there are several internet Journalists, including a couple on here, who have been published in either boxing news or boxing monthly, or both, so your argument doesn't really hold water. As for Ben Carey, he may get some stick on here, but the guy can write, and knows his stuff.

As for Colin Hart, whilst he knows boxing in the sense that he knows the difference between shite and talent, his knowledge of the current global scene isn't great. He didn't know who Ben Tackie was when Hatton was fighting him, despite the fact that Tackie was a former world title challenger. That I think is because like many people who have been around the sport for a long time, he perceives the modern era to be beneath him in terms of researching the current scene.

The problem with Hart is that he doesn't know much about the current scene, but speaks like an arrogant "know it all". Of course the Sun will list his predictions he got right but they won't print his predicitons that he got wrong which puts Hart into perspective. I wonder how many of John O'Donnell's fights he's actaully been to?

The bloke is stuck in a timewarp and simply can't keep up with what's happening in boxing. It's not easy for anyone to be honest, but he gets paid to write his shite about boxing and he does it badly IMO.

He overly negative, always looking for way to bring boxing down, when in fact there is quality, exciting boxing between good sporting pro's going on up and down Britain on a monthly basis.
