Some of these guys had more of a stamina problem than a chin problem (Shavers, Briggs) while others had both (Bruno, Morrison) I'd rank them as follows.

1) Shavers-Despite the Quarry fight, he took some tremondous shots from the likes of Lyle, Williams, Holmes, and Tillis without going down (although Lyle eventually did the trick later on). Not a great chin but not awful.

2) Shannon Briggs

3) Cleveland Williams

4) Mike Weaver

5) Frank Bruno

6) Carl Williams

7) Tommy Morrison

8) Leon Spinks

In fact, although it was 1st rd KO he took a LOT of shots from Quarry as well before going down, and Quarry was a pretty good puncher. Actually, I think Shavers had a pretty good chin.

Ah -ha and here in part was the major point of me starting this thread. I chose these 'modern' heavyweights as they have all at one point in time been accused of being 'chinny' either here or in the media etc and I have always felt in many cases this is either unfair or just a lazy assuption.

Very few World class fighters if any are really 'chinny' in my opinion.

John Tate had somewhat of a suspect chin for being the WBA heaveyweight champion. The punch he was knocked out by Weaver with was just a single punch. Not even an accumulation. On top of that it was a short left hook. When Ali was knocked down by Fraziers long sweeping left hook Fraizier got his whold body into the punch. Weaver appeared to be flat footed with his punch. It wasn't so much that Tate was unable to continue but the legnth of time he stayed on the canvas was what showed a suspect chin.

Also when he was knocked out by Treavor Berbick who was not known for being a big puncher he stayed down a long time. It's been awhile since I have seen that knockout but those really only looked like grazing blows. He was hit in the back of the head but he was moving away from that punch which did not look that hard anyway.

I always thought that Bruno's chin was better than he is given credit for.

Bruno's problem was a terrible lack of stamina & the inability to improvise under pressure.

Bruno was never sparked out, decked or hurt repeatedly in fights.

He seemed to have a weak spot at the top of his head (see Cummings & Tyson 1 fights), but his chin seemed quite sound to me.

He was too muscular & that just made him stiff, robotic & nervous.

Bruno,s chin (and heart) were ok,his stamina ,boxing brain wasnt,when tagged ala Bonecrusher ,he didnt have natural instinct to hold or stay down for a count. He took some massive shots in his career,not saying he had an iron chin but better than he gets credit for. Having said that I go with Cleveland Williams!!
