I have never seen Burley fight so I cannot tell. The late great trainer Eddie futch said that he was the greatest fighter he ever saw

I think SRR would have succesfully 'out-pointed' Burley more times than not and took unarguable decisions.

BUT and there always is, Burley proved himself, and against bigger and tougher men than Ray, so was Burley capable of 'neutrilizing' Robinson, hurting him and beating him - undoubtly and they would have probably made a good series of fights.

I do think SRR, because of who he was would have got Burley's mark and come out on top...however some would say Ray DID have Burley's mark and he used it to great success - AVOIDING him.

I think the Robinson avoiding Burley issue has been discussed before. It really is hard to buy. First of all, they were only both in the top 10 in the same weight class for one year. Secondly, look at all of the great fighters that Robinson fought throughout his career. It's hard to believe he was scared of Charley Burley. Look at their records. Burley was good and should have gotten a title shot , but he was beatable.
Robinson was a better fighter, and would have beaten Burley had they both been close to their primes at the same time.

Robinson by close decision. I don't subscribe to the theory that if A possibly avoided B, then it must be assumed that B would have won had they fought.

That is a good point. People assume this quite a bit. Just because fighter A didn't fight fighter B, doesn't automatically mean that he ducked him and that he would have lost to him. Sometimes that is the case, but certainly not all of the time.

I guess I don't understand this criticism at all. Robinson fought many top fighters, some were white, some were not. Some of the best fighters in his era were white. LaMotta, Basilio, and Fullmer were great fighters and weren't "overhyped".

Robinson did fight several top black fighters such as Gavilan, Tommy Bell, Tiger Jones, and Holly Mims. Randy Turpin and Henry Armstrong aren't usually classified as white fighters either.
