JMM-MAB in March - frees up WBO feather title?

Post by jomothepure »

Passed me by until now, but apparently Marquez is moving up to SF to fight Barrera in March.

The fight itself aside, this would also mean that the WBO featherweight title will presumably free itseld up once again.

Unfortunately from a UK point of view, and particularly for Nicky Cook, who was affectively robbed of his high WBC ranking for taking the Harrison fight, as he is only #6.

#1 is Steven Luevano
#2 is Marcos Ramirez

Can Frank pull one out of the bag and engineer Cook a title shot?

i reckon he'll sort something out for cook.

i'd like to see cook try and unify this division.

it's so wide open at the moment.

no real stars around at present.

I hope Cook gets a break here and can get a vacant title shot. He's really not had much luck with injuries and the Harrison debacle.

Seems that Injin Chi is the WBC champ after a typical fight of the year scrap for the vacant crown (shades of Chi-Bodie 1?). Are the WBC aware that Cookie's not fighting for the WBO, & has Cook even made his mind up which route he wants?

I hear that Chi wants to move up to fight Pac, and Marquez will definitely fight Barrera, so there's 2 avenues there.

Say, since we all got excited about Cook-Harrison, and have all been getting worked up about haye-Enzo, why don't we make noise about Cook-Asiku for a domestic battle?

What has happened to Asiku anyway? He should be having great fights with Cook, Hunter, Pickeling, Dunne.

Hasn;t Cook fought enough Africans already though? He gets injured too much to be staying around to fight guys like Asiku, he needs to get on the world level now.

Quite amazing that a long standing champion like Scott Harrison, who only a month back was scheduled to defend his title is now out of the rankings all together.

Most odd.......

Well ask yourself this, does Harrison deserve a ranking that way he has been behaving? In my opinion he doesn't. I'll be very surprised if Harrison has another fight before he gets banged up.

Yeah but since we're all making a big song and dance about domestic fights, that's a natural. Sadly Hatton-Witter, Haye-Macca were all naturals too.

But while all fighters are obsessed with ruinning before they can walk (Hunter anyone?) they should try and take on their domestic peers. It's daft to have all these good fighters in the same country, not fighting each other.

fully agree. BUT: you look at say the boxrec rankings (with the pretty flags for reference)and see how many yanks there are. youlot have a bigger pool of talent, and dont mind weeding it now and again. I'll hold my hands up and say that due to our smaller size we don't throw up so many good boxers as youse, so sometimes we tend to try to get them on the world stage without muddying the domestic waters by playing them off on one another.

back to the match, should be an excellent fight, I give JMM the edge, he is a little faster and more stronger than MAB IMO.

I think overcoming - or even going through - the adversity does fighters a lot of good. If domestic rivals square off, they learn a lot against a genuine peer, win, lose, or draw. Look how Benn was stopped by Eubank and Watson, and yet went on to win a WBC super middleweight title.

Benn also fought Piper and Wharton, to keep things interesting!

What domestic guys are their for Cook to fight? He sparked Dazzo out and Morris and Matthews are not near his level yet.

Plus with his injuries, he can't wait around.

People can say Asiku was inactive too since he hasn't had more than 2 rounds last year and McKeever isn't a tough opponent to say he'll give Cook a hard fight.

Whoops I meant fighting the likes of McKeever doesn't say Asiku would be tough for Cook.

Does Chi Vs Pac In China free up the WBC title for Cook?

Warren did promise Cook a title this year after all.

Asiku has been ducked - that's why he can only get the McKeevers and Callaghans. He was supposed to defend against Skinny Hussein, who pulled out on him. The poor guy couldn't even get Rutherford to take a fight - he certainly didn't want his Commonwealth title shot.

When Jackson was a raw novice he nearly stopped Hussein and was unlucky to lose to St Clair. I'd say they are more tested than Cook.

But Asiku is world level, pushed Nedal Hussian close and dropped him. This fight would show us if Cook is near world level or not. And what do you mean 'fought enough Africans'? You could say hasnt he fought enough Britains, or Europeans? whats that got to do with it? you fight who's there whatever their nationality. Whats it got to do with what part of the world your from. Someone either makes for a good fight or not. And I think Cook v Asiku makes for a good fight and side with Asiku to be too tough for Cook although its not a confident prediction.

World Level Asiku? Since when? He's only won the commonwealth title.

Cooks won the European title, British and Commonwealth, he doesn't need to step down to fight anymore Britons at the moment.

My point was Cooks already fought enough fighters of Commonwealth level and has had enough of Euro, British and Commonwealth level to give the world scene a go. Nationality has nothing to do with it.

Ok, yes I see your point nationality has nothing to do with it but Asiku only commonwealth level? come on! Just because he's 'only won the commonwealth title' (so far) doesn't mean he's not world level, and just because Cook has won Com, Euro, & Brit titles doesn't make him more World level than Asiku, I mean you could argue the strength of opposition who he won the titles of, the Euro title for example againts Cyril Thomas, no disrespect but he was not the strongest or best of the euro feather champs there have been, granted he was the champ & you can only box & beat who is but look at Asiku's record, he has mixed it by far the better calibure opponents Cook has. other than the only ones with guts who have boxed Asiku in the UK look at who Asiku has boxed world wide, look at his record, you telling me Cook is more worthy of being a higher level than what he is!? Dont tell me your another sucker brain washed by a little protected underfeated records! although im not saying Cook is not good, in fact I think he's very good and it'll make for a good fight & they should fight but I feel Asiku would win

A rusty St Clair gave Corrales a tough fight, and Corrales was twice his size and possibly a stone heavier, yet still St Clair ate up vicious combos and had Chico hurt a few times. He also beat Baloyi - a world class fighter - in South Africa to win the IBF, before getting surprised by Klassen.

St Clair may have ended up WBO feather champ if Harrison hadn't pulled out.

St Clair was also turned down by Roach, when he was penciled in to fight Pac. Roach found out that he was unknockoutable and wouldn't approve Gairy.

Harrison would of beat St Clair.

It's not hard to hurt Corrales. The guy wins when he has wars, but gets outboxed otherwise.
