If Max Schmeling would've been an American...

Post by Friedie »

....or stayed in the U.S. after the Nazis came to power.

What an impact would that have done to his boxing Carreer ?
My guess:

1. They would have given him the verdict against Sharkey in 1932 and Max would have retained the title for some more times (later evetually loose it to Max Baer).

2. After defeating Louis in 1936 he would have taken the title from Braddock and probably retireing afterwards.

Other opinions ?!

Quite possible, although I'm not sure Max could have avoided a refight with Louis. He would have been accused of ducking had he retired in 1937 at age 31.

good point. But Max could argue that he has nothing more to prove. In his autobiographie Max wrote, he was thinking of ending his career and his only wish was to win the title back and than retire as Champion like Gene Tunney did in 1928. And the American public would have loved him anyway, like many of them did before the Nazi-Era.

b.t.w. The circumstances of the refight would have been completly different without the political factor ("good american savior Joe Louis against "Nazi-Schmeling"....what he wasn't we all know today but in 1938 for the American public he was).

After winning the title Joe Louis wanted the remach with Max more than anything, and I imagine his backers would have found some way to tempt Max back into the ring.

...but in this scenario Max would have been Champ and not Louis ;)

Ah gotcha, sorry having a slow day today...

But you have to imagine Joe would have picked up the title at some point and then pulled out all the stops to get Max out of retirement

I don't think Max would have done that if I think of his personality (after reading his autobiography).

...but who knows. For a one or two million dollar purse he might have changed his mind. ...but on the other hand ...Max was a rich man already in 1938. And I guess he would have more likely go on with his acting carreer....together with his beautiful wife Anny Ondra who played actually in a Hitchkock-movie I remember). The answer of this question has more to do with Schmeling wanting the fight than Louis wanting it....
