In a great Ho Hum fest I would pick Joe Mesi.....I think he could have controlled the bayonne bleeder as long as he maintained his focus. No Ko but he should manage a decision. Wepner was NOT one of the fighters that made that era great or memorable. His greatest talent was that he could step on his dance partner's shoe.

I dont see Mesi actually knocking out Wepner. If he could still be standing after guys like Foreman (who broke his eye socket), Ali and Liston (who gave Wepner 87 stitches) gave him their best, I don't see too many people then or now being able to stop him---unless it was by TKO.
Wepner had such limited ability and was so sloppy that I can't still see to this day how the man was even successful as an amateur. He was tall and had a reach, but didnt use it to his benefit; in short he had alot going against him.
He did, however, outside of his toughness, a decent punch and an iron willed constitution. He was a very determined man, but quite frankly, he didn't have the tools.
I see it going the distance, maybe a little closer than most would think, with Mesi winning on points or a mid to late stoppage with Wepner complaining to the referee that he still could go on and still looking at Mesi.

Actually, Wepner was tall but had very short arms. He was incredibly limited and clumsy, and couldn't punch very hard. But if you remember the Ali fight, he could throw a mean looping right to the back of the head, which I think we all know is Mesi's biggest weakness.IrishRufusMurphy wrote:Wepner... Wepner by mid rounds stoppage from an accumulation of rabbit punches.
Good one. Foreman fractured his eye socket. Liston gave him about 100 stitches. Dude's best defense was his ability to take getting hit. I think he might've beaten Mesi, who's never been that hard to hit himself.Decagon wrote:Easy win for Wepner. I don't see Wepner getting brain damage from fighting Vassily Jirov.

Mr Boxbuzz, serious question here.BoxBuzz wrote:People are acting as if his ability to absorb punishment is his ticket.....Mesi would oblige him...he might even get a few more battlescars along the way to brag about. Of course with all his fouling I suppose people would worry that he would murder Mr Mesi....with the brain bleeding and all.
Is there any evidence that a rabbit punch to the back of the head is more dangerous than a blow of a simular force to the jaw or temple?

A very simple answer to your very simple question
YES, ..umm…that’s why it is an illegal blow, and has been since the bare knuckle days
The back of the head is the thinnest part of the skull, little more then thick cartilage, and the brain tissue is located under it is the cervical cortex, which is soft and porous. It is the section of the brain that delivers fluid to the spine. That is where the bleeding in Mesi brain occurred, because of the rabbit punch by Jirov
This is what cracks me up about the Mesi hating simpletons. They have no real basis for their pathetic visceral dislike for Mesi, so they have no place to go but “Duhhhhhh…..He got hurt by a cruiserweight…..yatta yattta yatta…blah blah blah.
Forget a cruiser weight…take any decent powered welterweight, and let him throw and over hand shotto the back of ANY HWs head, and you would see a similar injury, or at very least a concusion.
The fact is, Mesi and Jirov could fight 10 times, and Mesi would win 11 times.
NO opponent, has ever hurt, or created anything that resembled hurting Mesi with a legal blow.
Offensively, the babbling stupidity gets even worse. No weapons ? LMAO !!!
Mesi knocked down Davis with a right, and out with a left. He put TOS to the edge of a coma with a right to the chest and a left to the jaw. You know TOS right? The SAME TOS who beat Oliver McCall, the guy who sent Lennox Lewis to Queer Street?
:(
The Mesi haters are an amusing bunch, no doubt about it. Well, amusing in a pitiful, dwarf bowling sort of way anyway.
Next month, after Mesi's 10 rounder..There will be a lot of red faces, a lot of pathetic jibberish about why yet ANOTHER Mesi win "didnt prove anything" and possibly some changed Boxrec forum screen names
cosand has this about right...technically your more likely to get a spine injury than an actual head injury. However in that area it is still generally considered a head injury by the medical community.
Somewhat different because the spine up there is not all that supported and as cosand mentioned is a lot of cartlidge...the skull does a pretty good job of protection but back there it's not really skull...just a bit of meat, smaller verterbrae and the stuff that holds it all together.
Rabbit punches can be a one way ticket to a bad day.

Thank you sir, and you are 100% correct on the possible spine injury.
In fact, the head of Neurology at the University of Massachusetts, who examined Mesi, and even testified on behalf of Mesi before the Nevada state boxing commission, told both the Mesi camp and conceded to the commission, that had the blow been an inch lower on the head, it may well have resulted in a spine injury that would have affected Mesi’s motor skills long term, and even hindered the use of one or both of his arms.
It is that exact testomony, even though it was intended to advocate for Mesi, that is still giving both the NY State and the Illionois State comissions, anxiety over granting Mesi a license to fight in those States even to this day. He experineced some loss of equilibrium after the fight, and that makes the MDs nervouus, even though Joe has been given a clean bill of health by every doctor that has examined him since 2005
