What ever happened to Kevin "Real Hammer" Lear?

Post by black panther »

Kevin looked good in stopping gomez and after only 12 fights as well. After that I heard he had a ahnd injury? but was due to make a comeback. What happened? Its been bugging me for a while.

He has a shoulder injury, recurring so not sure if he will ever fight again. There have been aborted comeback attempts I believe.

Last I heard he was on the bins.

Shame, he was a good fighter while he lasted.

I did hear though that I training stints in tenerife he was a nightmare to keep a track of - was liable to climb out the window at night and hit the clubs!

It is a shame what happened to Kevin Lear, he seemed to have a huge future in boxing after he beat Gomez. I've heard similiar reports about his outside of the ring lifestyle. A happy-go-lucky guy who hated training and just seemed to be content as long as he had a few quid in his back pocket

I reada few weeks ago in BN that his trainer said Lear had accepted his shoulder would never allow him to fight again with any confidence that it would hold up, so he had called time. As best as I can recall I think he added that he hoped Lear would work with him in a training capacity as an assistant but can't be 100% on that part.

I remember reading this in boxing news, not a flashy bloke who was happy if he had a few quid and a bet on.

Definitely a good one who was capable of winning a British title and more. I'll never forget his pummelling of Michael Gomez :box: OR his hilarious appearance on Ringside with Paul Dempsey and Spencer Oliver  He'll be missed.

Shoulder problems if I remember correctly.

He wasnt the world hardest trainer and liked a pint/party, at least that was what I was told.

Last time I heard he was back on the bins.

I think his fights kept being delayed due to a dislocated shoulder and he retired because of it. It was a problem from his amateur days, it scuppered a fight with Gavin Rees once.

kevin lives a few doors away from me and was the best superfeather prospect we had had in years. outclassed gomez in manchester, would have nailed arthur and gone on to world level if it hadnt been for the shoulder injury. bags of skill, fearless and an excellent boxing brain. big loss to our sport. a great lad too.

I heard that Kevin liked to enjoy himself. Saw a few of his fights and thought he had a bit of class about him as a pro.

Being several years older than his brother I can remember him as a nipper walking into the gym with his rightfully proud dad watchng his older brother Danny going through the paces - Danny showed a bit of natural talent and class too as a young lad. They moved to West Ham ABC afterwards and I never really followed his career in either the amateurs or pros but heard good things about him throughout.

i dont know anyone who has a bad word to say about kevin.
i like him alot and was very disappointed with his bad luck.

shame about kev and the shoulder. he had the potential to be our best super feather for many a long year. he would have starched alex arthur, made a monkey of earl and gone on to world honours in my humble opinion. he really knew what he was doing in the ring

I really liked Lear.

He took the Gomez fight for the WBU Title without having 8 rounds under his belt. Boxed great that night.

Shame about injury halting him early, would have been good to see how far he could go. Not sure about him "Starching" Arthur but he would deff be in that group with Arthur, Burns, Gomez, O'hara, Limmond, Mitchell.

Lear Vs Mitchell would have been a great London fight for the British Title !

He came across as a good bloke and I hope he's doing well whatever he's up to. He was trained by Johnny Eames, he might know ?

be fair, lear was head and shoulders - sorry to mention those - above the list you post and he would have given mitchell an education.

boxing news kept the faith in kevin by holding him as our top ranked super feather for as long as they could before the injury proved to be a career stopper.

Blimey you guys are carried away. I think I saw all of Lear fights.

He was slick, useful no doubt. But he really lacked power.......
