Kessler-Andrade in Denmark
Kessler-Andrade in Denmark
This clears up A LOT of nonsense including WBC to GBP favouritism (WBC agreed to strip Kessler AND make Andrade champion if Kessler couldn't fight early this year), rows over where the fight was going to be staged etc. Good that Kessler gets home advantage. Librado, you have to do it the HARD WAY, hahahahaha
Palm wins Kessler-Andrade bid!

The winner of the purse bid for the mandatory defense of WBC/WBA super muddleweight champion Mikkel Kessler vs WBC mandatory challenger Librado Andrade was Palm Promotions from Denmark with a winning bid of USD $1,777,777, outbidding Palle Promotions $1,678,876 and Golden Boy Promotions $1,312,000. Palm Promotions is a new company headed by former European welterweight champion Hans Henrik Palm, who was formerly promoted by Palle chief Mogens Palle.

As a dane and a Kessler fan i'm NOT happy this fight will be in Denmark. It will do nothing to bring Kessler international exposure.viciousmaussa wrote:This clears up A LOT of nonsense including WBC to GBP favouritism (WBC agreed to strip Kessler AND make Andrade champion if Kessler couldn't fight early this year), rows over where the fight was going to be staged etc. Good that Kessler gets home advantage. There's still a chance it could be televized outside Denmark - But it's bad news for Kessler really. Making a future Calzaghe-Kessler fight even less likely.
Re: Kessler-Andrade in Denmark
Still, Palle was very upset about the WBC and it seemed as though he was going to play into their hands and not take the fight at one point.dumdane wrote:As a dane and a Kessler fan i'm NOT happy this fight will be in Denmark. Kessler-Calzaghe won't happen anyway. it's just a reality that they're on seperate routes. Calzaghe wants an American fan base.
What happened to that Canadian deal, where Kessler-Andrade was the main event, with Bute on the undercard?

Nah. Palle and Palm are working together. They're not at all competitors.hitman_hatton1 wrote:i bet mogens palle ain't too happy.
that would be the british equivalent of fight academy coming in and winning a calzaghe purse bids.![]()
i wouldn't totally rule out calzaghe-kessler from happening. not yet though.
Reason Palm won the purse-bid is if he promotes it, Palle can get arround a bad TV-deal.
Still find it annoying that Palle is so damn focussed on having the fight in Denmark and that Golden Boy WOULDN'T outbid a small danish promoter for the fight. (They obviously could if they wanted)

I agree with you. I suspected that Palle and Palm were working together. (Just like Warren & Warriors won that Woods-Johnson 3 purse bid - together)...Personally, I think the most important thing is that Kessler is facing a dangerous challenger, and he will have to show a lot of his skills.dumdane wrote:Nah. I'm not going to have a go at Calzaghe - if he'd taken Kessler instead of Lacy, EVERYONE would still be saying how great Lacy is - but Joe doesn't always have to face quality challengers and his matchmaker should be strung up by his ears on account of Bika/Salem/Ashira.
So we've got a unified champion Kessler taking on a puncher, sounds good to me so long as I can watch it.
I think the Ringtalk.com writer Cliff Rold makes a good point saying that HBO should go out of their way to market Calzaghe and particularly Kessler, because Taylor would have genuine rivalries up at 168, more money, and more glory (if JT can win - which I doubt).
It was assumed that it would be Taylor v Lacy at 168 - US Olympian vs US Olympian (so effing what), but for now that is out of the equation.
Calzaghe-Kessler is impossible. JC and his team want American names, and Kessler is a potential massive roadblock.
I'm sick of the Calzaghe-Kessler threads. I say good luck to 'em, so long as they're making good money in genuine championship fights. I don't think Britain will see another fighter with JC's speed and stamina for light years, and I don't know how long it'll be till Denmark manage to perfect the jab and long range boxing again.
Well done with what? The fight is good and very interesting. I am looking forward to it. But the fact that it will not be in Vegas is not "well done" - it is a minus to Kessler's carreer. Talk about shooting himself in the foot.knockout wrote:well done Team kessler.... Great fight and putting SN to shame!!!!

As can be seen - I have not been critical of Calzaghe because it was Calzaghe but because I think he has done so much wrong in his carreer... and I will bash Kessler if he starts doing the same.

I don't think Andrade's limited. He seems to have a lot of power, is massive for his weight, and puts some thought into his pressure, and varied the body/head.
He's the antithesis of Calzaghe, who uses speed to confuse & wear out opponents.
Very good fight, IMO. Good to see a young champion in with some power/youth. These are the kind of fights in which he can really grow.
Also, he's a top 10 opponent, so it feels like a real world title fight.
(Then again...oops,just looked in Boxing Monthly and Manfredo Jr is top 10, fair enough.)
Andrade's problem is a lack of fights. He seems in the Israel Vazquez, Castillo, Margarito mould - in the sense that he basically learned to fight in the pros.
I think Andrade can develop well with McCullough, and his technique is already advancing beyond Margarito's.

The WBC are in GBP's pocket. Foreigners get raw deals in America - even the best of them like Casamayor, Karmazin, Quartey. 90 yo Yank judges score fights how they want to. And home refs are pissed off with the away fighter before the first bell. Commentator Al Bernstein noted how it's always the foreign fighter who gets points deducted (see Juan Diaz v Fernado Angulo telecast).Deram wrote:Well done with what? HBO might be more interested in Andrade - big punching Mexican - than Kessler. We all know how HBO like to try and rewrite history as it's happening.
I can imagine Kessler outjabbing Andrade over the early rounds. "Okay Harold, how do you have it after five rounds?". "Hehe, okay Jim, I have it 4 rds to 1 - Librado Andrade. He's controlling the pace - his feet are moving forward - and he's blocking all of Kessler's jabs with his chin - EFFECTIVE AGGRESSION, 4 rds to 1, Andrade..."
I say it's great that Kessler gets home advantage. There was a real stink about this matchup.
Kessler should take it to America on his own terms.

Veit was also a manadatory... twice. Something the WBO apparently never has.boxingchat wrote:Ooo, you know your stuff. Veit was Calzaghe's first mandatory after more than 5 years, and a totally undeserving one. If it signifies anything then it is the fact that the WBO is also in the claws of Universum, and not just Sports Network.Taki... wrote:Veit was also a manadatory... twice. The second Calzaghe-Veit bout was an accident anyway -- Calzaghe talked about fighting Glencoffe for the IBF title at 175, then pulled out, but by that time the WBO had made Universum the favor to elevate Veit to interim champion (after a win over mummified Charles Brewer).
Probably good that Calzaghe didn't face many mandatories, because the WBO's can be worst than any.
Well, anyway, let's hope something good comes after Manfredo.
They've burned some bridges - Woods, Kessler - and word is that Hopkins would rather fight Jones before thinking about Calzaghe, and that Taylor will live or die (in his reputation) against Wright.
You'd think that Froch would be likely, for a British appeal fight, but is FW going to work with Hennessey? My guess is they'll get one of those ShoBox super middles, maybe Hanshaw or Mendy. Could that happen on HBO?
I write off the top Euro level - Tsypko, Stieglitz (of course) - because they don't draw UK or US interest.
BRAINSTORM!!! - There is a rumoured Allan Green-Edison Miranda fight, Calzaghe could probably fight the winner.

I think that when Kessler and Calzaghe win, It shouldn't be long till they face each other.
Calzaghe wanted Hopkins or Taylor, well Taylor's not moving up and Hopkins is fighting Roy so Calzaghe's not left with many options.

Very true - but whoever wins will be classed as a top 10 contender sort. Green's bad attitude seems to carry much further than his performances - some of which are uninspiring, some excellent; Miranda being a banger, with HBO interested, would be a fight for Joe to make an American debut. In addition, what woukd Miranda give for a world title shot in the USA,Max Molyneux wrote:I think that when Kessler and Calzaghe win, It shouldn't be long till they face each other.

Why was Veit undeserving? Talent at 168 had been pretty thin on the ground (possibly because of a lack of genuine 154-160 fighters to step up). Things aren't much better now in terms of undeserving mandatories... Stieglitz and Andrade have yet to have anything approaching a meaningful fight and both are #1 contenders! In fact if you look at the SM top 10 it's astonishing that only the 'veterans' have fought anyone else inside the top 15. Of the up-and-comers only Inkin has a decent scalp on his resume.pundit wrote:Veit was Calzaghe's first mandatory after more than 5 years, and a totally undeserving one.
