Post by Friedie »

...according to his record here on Boxrec he won the European Lightheavyweight title from Giulio Rinaldi June 10th, 1961.

I suspect the entry is intended to mean that the EBU recognised that fight as being for the world title. Unless the EBU was doing something crazy at the time Moore would not have been eligible to fight for the title.

Moore had not defended the title since his 2nd fight with Yvon Durelle in 1959. He lost to Rinaldi in a non title fight & was giving Rinaldi a rematch & shot at the title, on that date. He had been stripped of the title for inactivity by the NBA who wanted him to fight Harold Johnson who was ranked #1 contender. Archie didn't want to & fight him, having already beaten him 4 out of 5, although they hadn't met since 1954. He was still rated champion by Ring magazine however & the EBU, California & Mass.

Yes, that's right Bill.... Moore's recognition as champ wasn't anywhere near universal by that stage, but the EBU were happy to recognise this as a world title fight. There is no way Moore could have fought for the actual European title (ie "Champion of Europe") unless like I said in an earlier post, the EBU were going thru a "mad phase"! :)

He shouldn't be listed as being European Champion on Boxrec - if you look under "title" and then "Europe" and "Lt Heavy" you'll see the fight listed as being for the European title. Wrong...IMHO!
